Don't forget that D-J-F are huge retail sales months for consumer electronics in the US. Looking at historic NPD numbers - January and February are fairly standard months for console sales. It's November and December where volume is significantly increased.
I see your point, but Japan has plenty of PS3s in stock so it's not going to make the slightest difference if Sony ups their production any more. Every time I've checked Amazon.co.jp this week they have had the PS3 and news reports state that the high-street stores have stock too.
Regarding noise, I've seen the levels vary massively with 360s. My brother's console is no louder than a Wii, but my friends original 360 (which I persuaded him to return as faulty) sounded like a jet engine spinning up. Apparently it's all to do with the DVD drive... some of which seem horribly balanced. It's a concern to me too though, which is why if I bought one I'd be returning them until I got a quiet version. Seems like MS could increase their sales by quite a bit if they made a definitive fix and announce that they'd improved the noise levels.
The article doesn't say an increase since last year, it says week on week.
"In a statement, communications boss David Karraker said the top five retailers in North America were reporting a week-by-week rise in PS2 hardware sales of more than 115 per cent over the Thanksgiving period. Sales of PSP units, meanwhile, were up by 280 per cent."
According to NPD (US numbers sold, not shipped): October 2005 PSP = 131,000 November 2005 PSP = 353,000 which gives us an 269% increase for November 2005.
Did everybody just fall for an announcement of a sales increase that can pretty much be attributed to seasonal variations?
I'm not saying that they should break your data, don't be asinine. I'm saying that it's perfectly possible to patch in a timely manner without breaking existing functionality. Especially with the resources a company like Oracle can throw at a problem.
I used work as an Oracle dba for a blue chip company and I find their service levels ludicrous.
I think realistically a lot of this can be traced back to the "Unbreakable" marketing campaign. They set themselves up for a major fall. That said, Oracle takes far too long to patch vulnerabilities and worrying about "breaking something critical" is not a good excuse.
Part of the fun of being a kid is having the energy and enthusiasm to cheer lead the system you own, while dissing the system your best friend's parents bought him instead. It's fun, and just because it's now progressed onto the internet doesn't make it any less harmless then it's ever been.
Correct. What's sad is the amount of adults that are professional PR for the corporations... but don't get paid for it.
I'm really interested, so don't take offense... but why on earth would you be happy for a corporation? They don't give a shit about you, you shouldn't give a shit about them. I've really never understood it. Sure, stand up for and shout all about some small operation that needs the support but don't cry when a corporation gets bashed.

I can't help thinking that the best thing Google could do on this is provide the server needs for utube.com to function whilst being hammered by the people incorrectly hitting the site. I don't think they would have much to complain about after that... though I'm sure that probably wouldn't stop them.
I might be wrong, but I'm sure there's an even higher version of Mensa for those in the top 0.5% IQ. Anyone know what it's called? I seem to recall it being Genus or something similar but it was a real long time ago that I heard of it.
I imagine their magazine is much, much worse... =)
I'm interested, did the PS2 have this sort of competition when it was released in Europe? By my reckoning the last console releases for Sony in Europe went something like this:
Playstation: September 1995. Competition: Sega Saturn (July 1995). The Nintendo 64 was not released for another 2 years.
Playstation 2: November 2000. Competition: Sega Dreamcast (October 1999). The Nintendo GameCube was not released for another 12 months, the XBOX another 4 months after that.
Playstation 3: March 2007. Competition: Nintendo Wii (November 2006), XBOX 360 (November 2005).
Sony is walking into a whole world of hurt in Europe. By March 2006 there may not be much of a market left for them. They've faced nothing like this sort of competition in the past.
Question is, wouldn't it have been better to lie about how many they were sending and release it in Europe anyway? No-body is planning on being able to get hold of one anyway and you avoid the animosity.
In other shock news reported today it has become apparent that people can have different opinions, and that you cannot please everyone all of the time.
Is gears of war suddenly so important that Slashdot is publishing links to pre-previews as some sort of scoop?
I don't see Sony being able to turn the PS3 into a hardware profit maker. Every time they're able to make savings, it's likely that MS and Nintendo will be able to pressure them with price cuts. Continued price cuts will obviously wipe out any profit made on the machines.
Then again, as we know it's a calculated risk... I'm sure they've worked out how many games they're going to sell and priced accordingly so that they don't do too much damage to themselves.
I was amazed at how many 360 games were on the list. Looks like now we'll see if the "racist purchasing" accusation has any weight or not. Personally I think it's crap because of the success of things like the ipod... but fanboys seem to put a lot of weight on it.
As much as I dislike some things MS does, I can't help but feel a little sorry for them in Japan! =D

Sony either need games or a price drop.

Damn... I didn't think of that. I assume that you wont be able use enterprise manager to control an offsite server with Vista?
Handy. =) Change the numbers a bit and you've got an estimation of how much profit / loss there was too.

I've not seen that site before. It's just asking for an bot with a phone book export and a few thousand automatically handled email addresses... =)

I'm wondering where the inq got the current number for the MS BOM. The last one I saw is detailed here: http://www.linuxelectrons.com/News/Hardware/200511 24115105551
Anyone know if there is a more up to date one somewhere?

I knew I should have checked first... good old Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_IQ_Society
Yes, I've had an IQ test when I was a kid and no I'm not telling you what I got. =P

Yeah, I did a ton of that - one week I worked 120 hours. I was really looking forward to my paycheque until I realised I was salaried... =(
People buy the Xbox to play Halo, get it? Not the other way around.
I'm glad, "People buy the Halo to play Xbox" wouldn't have made any sense at all...
