Games Come To the Colbert Nation

Stephen Colbert's hit Comedy Central show "The Colbert Report" has already seen some game-related activities. You may recall the day he retired his dice because of Dungeons and Dragons Online's launch, or "Everything Bad is Good For You" author Steven Johnson's appearance on the show. Last week, though, with the release of the Wii, Colbert had to "get his Wii on", and demonstrated Wii Boxing vs. a virtual Nancy Pelosi. Next Monday will see veteran game designer Will Wright on the show.

      After I discovered the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. I finally found a part of the USA I liked.

      There are still reasons to be critic against your government though, though the entertain us very much. :>

      I get the quote, but really, from someone who works in marketing, we're really not the evil ones - all we do is look at what the advertising industry is producing and define it with statistics; we're the ones who tell the advertising agencies that what they're doing is pissing people off and to stop it. You won't believe me, but we're on your side.

      The people you (and Bill Hicks) were thinking of are the people in Public Relations. THEY'RE bloodsuckers.

      Steven Colbert picked his target audience, it was actually a very smart move. Since you are on slashdot, you know how many "nerds" are out there. I say more power to him.

    Judging by relative frequency, a gaming Slashvertisement costs the same as a gaming Colbertisement. We have a nice 1:1 correlation going so far. Or should that be "Wii?"

      No offence, but if Colbert's bit on the Wii was was paid advertising, don't you think Sony could pay at least as much to slip in a PS3 plug?

      I believe he's parodying Bill Cosby...who after getting his honorary PhD added it to his name in the credits to "The Cosby Show."

      Your post has a certain odor of 'truthiness' about it.

      In fact, Cosby earned a real live Ph.D. in the field of education at UMass during the 1970s.

      This was during the same time that he was working on the Fat Albert cartoon.

      Knox College. Carl Sandburg College is the local community college, and does not grant doctorates, honorary or not.

      I believe you're correct about it being Fine Arts though. And he gave a pretty good talk. Better than the guy who spoke at my graduation, that's for sure.

      Colbert is a genius.

      Here is how he got his doctorate in fine arts, from a Wired magazine piece on him earlier this year:

      "I have a doctorate in fine arts from Knox College in Illinois. All I did was give a speech, and now everybody has to call me Dr. Colbert."

      Except since the player guides every "evolution" in the game, its really a game about Intelligent Design isn't it? Granted, I'd imagine that most people's designs won't be so intelligent, but it fits the ID theory, no?

    don't forget he also at one point totally dissed wikipedia (not that it didn't deserve what he said) and told people to go change an article to something purposely not true. Just think about what would have happened if he had changed the wording just a hair and told people to edit every article randomly to stuff that's not true. Bye bye wikipedia. He's an overall complete anti-geek in case you haven't watched every episode of the show.

      I can spot geniune tech stupidity from a distance of 50 feet at least and I'm right in front of my monitor (TV tuner card) so trust me, some things he says are truly accurate to people like that.

      you're not getting the point. Colbert, as seen on the Colbert report, is a character. He plays an internet-hating, republican-loving news anchor, where as in real life, he leans left, and is actually decently teched out.

      And yet, despite the constant vandalism, the entry was eventually locked, cleaned up, and it now stable. Don't you get it? By moving huge numbers of people to vandalize that page, he proved the opposite of his point - which is what the show is all about, if you'll recall.

      And by the way, Colbert would not have changed the wording to encourage general wikipedia vandalism because A) it wouldn't be funny, and B) nobody would do it. (see A)
