Russian Rocket Hits Wyoming
Harmonious Botch wrote in with a CNN story that opens: "A spent Russian booster rocket re-entered the atmosphere Thursday over Colorado and Wyoming, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said.
NORAD spokesman Sean Kelly said the agency was trying to confirm a report that a piece of the rocket may have hit the ground near Riverton, Wyoming, at about 6 a.m.
Kelly said military personnel had not yet reached the scene.
No damage was reported and the debris was not believed to be hazardous, NORAD said.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing flaming objects in the sky at the time the rocket was re-entering, Kelly said."
With Russia's increase in commercial space traffic, they now have excellent cover to leave nukes disquised as debris in a decaying orbit. With very subtle changes in orbit they can cause the "debris" to come down in the middle of any major US city. We won't realize it until it is too late.
I think what RexHowland was referring to was "Rocket Hits," which to me sounds more like a planned destination rather then, what I assume to be, a mechanical failure of somekind (I basically skimmed throught the article) Optimists would most likely read "Crashes" instead of "Hits" ("Russian Rocket Crashes in Wyoming - Mechanical Failure Brings Rocket to Earth") Pessimists would probably read "Rocket" as "Missle" ("Russian Missle Hits Wyoming - Retaliation for Bush's Low IQ") That's just my take on the post. It's all about how you read the article, not what's typed.
Bush lanuches back!! Its global war!
The use of the word "hits" strongly implies targetting -- in this sense, the use of the word in the article headline is highly misleading/sensationalistic. I don't doubt the sensationalism was intended for humorous effect rather than to actively mislead Slashdot readers, however.

I believe Dr. von Braun also said "Nazi, Schmatzi"
Most of the stuff on
But saying a rocket "lands" implies guidance. This rocket fell out of the sky.
How about "Russian Rocket Crashes in Wyoming"?

So....
NORAD sees a rocket go up from Russia.
NORAD sees an object come down from that rocket, towards the United States.
NORAD aparently didn't advise the whitehouse that there was a launch, or that a potential first strike had just been launched.
It's not unreasonable to believe that it could have been a first strike. How many countries don't exactly like the US right now? How many have the budget to buy an old russian ICBM where it sits? Oh ya, quite a few. If they were to do such a thing, obviously Russia wouldn't be doing it, so we wouldn't (hopefully) return fire on Russia, but whoever the enemy is did just get a first strike in.
I'm glad we didn't nuke the planet over this. I have to wonder how many people were scrambling for their bunkers, while us civilians didn't hear anything about it until it made the news...
Serious? Seriousness is well above my pay grade.
