I have yet to find a linux distribution or any alternative operating system (besides BeOS and Mac OS X) that didn't run Gnome or KDE, had a functional desktop, and could run nicely under 256mb of ram. X and Firefox alone use ~100mb of ram on my machine AND i don't get an accelerated desktop. Looks like Windows has the desktop market in the bag with Apple looking for a piece. Linux is still the red-headed stepchild that has to eat in the basement. Not bashing, just laying the facts on the table.

I am sorry, your "facts" are miss laid. I can run fluxbox, firefox, and a transparent (puesdo) terminal, all in ~100 megs of memory. Yet, in windows, I am up to 250 just loading the OS. No I do not have anything loading in startup, or in the systray. Just my ATI drivers (which are bloated no argue, but which also load under linux using dri and glx). So I think before you start laying down your "facts" you should do some honest research. Opinions are fine, facts are something entirely different. Come back with some actual benchmarks.

I have been using Slackware since 7.0. In the mean time I have worked in places where I was told to use Red Hat, Suse, Mandrake, etc. In that time I have always found Slackware far easier to setup and keep runnng. No strange configuration tools, such as Yast, where if I change something in the file and then run Yast, it reverts all my changes. I am not a PHD and when I started using Slackware I was new to Linux. However in the time, I have learned more about the inner workings than any other distro could have taught me. As far as package tools, I can use RPM or TGZ's, how much more free and flexible could you ask for. My only gripe is the lack of Gnome in the more recent releases. Even with this, I am far too commited and happy to leave. Thank you Pat, you gave us a distro to be proud of.

I considered something of that nature when I posted. However, first off, IMO, this is a pretty rare instance. Secondly, if someone is editing a confidential document, they should really be paying closer attention to detail. They could very well slip and press ctrl+v (or even alt+tab) and the same problem could be cited. I think this is an issue that needs to be incorporated into the office software, not the OS.

Some ISP's, like MSN, require you to "log-in" via a browser after certain time lengths. Some ISP's, like MSN, will only accept these "log-in's" via IE. You can not log in using Firefox.

I made the mistake once of going with MSN, because I had just moved to the area, and needed an ISP. So I took the first one available, and I learned my lesson.

I was just using my browser one day and suddenly I was greeted with a log in page. I couldn't get around it, I called MSN and they told me I had to have IE to log in. I told them I was using linux and they claimed to have never heard of it.

So yes, sadly some ISP's do not support Linux or other non-IE capable OS's.

High School specifically squashes individual thought and behaviour. This country is very threatened by that behaviour in it's day to day operations. If everyone became comfortable with expressing thier own opinions, where would the fear and "blue laws" gain thier footing. The fact of the matter is that these ideas are what help shape this capitalist country we are living in. Fads keep the economy alive and fear of other's reactions keeps us in line. What makes you think that high schools are not doing EXACTLY what they are meant to be doing.

If you REALLY want to learn, there is little stopping you. College is great from some. Myself, I honestly prefer a self-teaching method. It really comes down to your choice of learning.
