Conservative Sarkozy Wins Presidency of France

Reader reporter tips us to a story just up at the NYTimes reporting that the tough-talking conservative candidate Nicolas Sarkozy has won election as the president of France. His opponent, Socialist Party candidate Ségolène Royal, the first woman to get as far as the runoff in a presidential contest in France, has conceded defeat. The vote went 53% to Sarkozy and the turnout was a remarkable (by American standards) 85% of registered voters. Sarkozy is seen as a divisive figure for his demand that immigrants learn Western values (and the French language).

      Or did you see the black and white Americans who were assaulted en masse over and over again by Hispanics just because they were peacefully protesting in favor of Prop 187? Probably not unless you saw the videos on the Internet; most of the media wouldn't report these numerous attacks.

    It is sad when the French out do the USA because they are smart enough to have voting on a weekend, not Tuesday. The USA constitution got many things correct, but not that.

    Perhaps now the French will be with us in trying to defeat/kill all the terrorists everywhere in the civilized world? Probably not, but I can dream.

    As an Asian, I'm absolutely glad that Sarkozy won. May I point out that he himself is a son of immigrants, and not the anti-immigrant caricature that the story blurb would have us believe.

    Vive la France! By voting against the socialist and fundamentalist-sponsored hoodlums and other opponents of assimilation, the French people have chosen a path for future progress and prosperity.

    The North Korean people lost, horribly, when we gave up and quit. The same will happen to the Iraqi people when Emperor Hilary wins the election. Unfortunately, we'll loose too, since now they know they can press their victory in NYC to the rest of the country. At least we held out 6 or 7 years longer then the Spanish did.

    actually, terrorists did celebrate the democratic victory in 06 and they are also supportive of the democrats withdrawl from iraq and afganistan since that would be a defacto win for them. So yes, that is actually true in this case.

    That is ancient history and has nothing to do with recent interaction. The French BTW were repaid generously. WWI and WWII come to mind....

    French gratitude for our efforts was demonstrated by their resistance to the North African landings and eager VIchy cooperation with the Germans.
    They have done nothing of note since WWII, are Islamizing rapidly (Sarkozy is well-intentioned but too late) and like the rest of Europe hate their own culture and have surrendered to mobs of cultural enemies from the Third World who only want to be in Europe for the money.

    The vast amounts of illegal immigrants are Mexican, and they don't come here because of all those erroneous platitudes that hardly exist anymore, they come here because mexico is a walk away from the US, there's a huge unguarded border, and Mexico sucks *worse* than the US. Plus, so far, they know they can game the system, they can be arrested any number of times and nothing happens to them of any consequence. They can use the most outlandish and scammy of false ID to get real ID-and nothing happens to them. They can drive around sans license or insurance-and nothing happens to them. They can break 15 laws then cry "racism".

    Turn it around, you can't even OWN property as an outsider in mexico without a partner!

    Supporting illegal immigration into the US is racist, the european looking mexicans-the castillians-want to get rid of as many indians and mestizos as possible, but you certainly won't hear that on the news, nor will any democrats admit it, because most are just plain ignorant of the facts, and go by emotion, and not logic or understanding of current politics in other nations or even basic economic concepts. They just see "mexican", they aren't even aware of the huge class and racial differences and discrimination inside mexico, or how by their being in support of illegal immigration, they are allying with the most corrupt and racist group of plutocrats in north america, the mexican hierarchy.     On the right, just as bad a situation, but not from ignorance like with the dims, nope, from greed. Grass roots middle class republicans are fully aware of what a clear cut non-assimilating and dangerous invasion this is, and are almost totally opposed to it. I know very few who are opposed to lawful slow and legal immigration (not xenophobic in other words), but almost universally there is opposition to the illegal invasion (geez, just check the hard data crime stats, or what the illegals do to local property taxes, just the crime makes any threat of "jihadists" pale against current reality). There are something on the order of between 100,000 and 300,000 hard core murdering latino gang bangers in this nation, and some are now *third generation*. Just LOOK at the hard crime figures.

    Now, the upper crust limousine riding RINO republicans, who apparently totally run the r party now, are in favor of the illegals (hence why so little action beyond lip action to control them), because illegal immigrants are the ultimate scabs, the truly spectacular way to drive wages down so that millionaires can become billionaires. They *don't want* a three class society, they want a TWO class society, 99% serfs, 1% masters. Outsource what jobs they can to drive down wages, insource for the others. And I don't want to hear that illegal immigrants "do the work that regular people won't do", that's pure crap. They are in every building trade, every service job, all manufacturing, across the board in agricultural, and so on. All your normal blue collar and pink collar and green collar jobs, and with H1B abuse, white collar.     The link you provided starts with "Al-Qaeda's second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahiri said a US congressional bill calling for a troop withdrawal from Iraq was proof of Washington's defeat, according to a web video posted on Saturday." that is hardly support for bush's policies. I doubt al-qeda would oppose their own victory. I also do not think al-qeda is an iraqi nationalist group since they consist mostly of foreign whabbist fighters and that has been a source of tension with actual nationalists. al-zawarhi that is in the article you linked to is Egyptian. Al-qeda is a sunni arab group. iraq is a majority shia arab and sunni kurd country.

    Maybe I'm not up on all my history, but IIRC, the Jews were hated in places like Germany because they were so successful. They owned lots of businesses, and had a lot of money. Maybe they didn't fit into the culture too well, but you can't say they caused any social problems doing these things other than jealousy.

    Even now, Jews are still known for being highly successful wherever they go. Here in the USA, they seem to own lots of businesses and be in a lot of high positions in the business world. In Israel, they've managed to take a crappy strip of desert and turn it into an economic powerhouse, while their neighbors are still living in the stone age comparatively.

    By contrast, Muslims not only don't fit in, but they start riots, assassinate people, rape women, kill people, etc. It seems to me that maybe they just don't belong in a civilized society.

    7th largest? sure, but for how much time? French economy is doomed because of their stupid subsides, their gigantic bureaucracy and the imminent catastrophic failure of their pension system. Nicholas can slow down the decadence, but France can't be saved under no stretch of imagination, once Germany get tired of helping them they will slowly become a third world country.

    How is it "racism" to call something for what it is? It seems like most people these days using the race card are doing it to just push their own agenda, or ignore other people's opinions, rather than to engage in any constructive dialog.

    I think a better term is "culturalism" (although this sounds pretty hokey). Cultures are different, and some cultures are clearly superior to others, unless you subscribe to the idiocy that is moral relativism. Cultures which advocate stoning women to death when they accidentally show some skin on their arm are clearly backwards, barbaric, primitive cultures which have no place in the modern world. Cultures which advocate freedom, individual civil liberties, etc. are obviously superior to the former. So I don't see how criticizing or even condemning members of a barbaric culture, who continue to push said culture and attempt to destroy more modern cultures, is a bad thing.

    Calling it "racism" is just BS. There's lots of people from areas of the world with such backwards cultures, who have moved to countries with superior cultures and successfully assimilated.
