Last Chance to Enter For Slashdot Anniversary Party Grand Prize

Today is your last chance to enter the Slashdot 10-Year Anniversary party contest. All you need to do is send pictures, videos, or whatever party evidence you can email to anniversary at slashdot dot org. The winner will be whoever sends the things that make their party look the coolest, the most nerdish etc. We've seen signs, games, etc so far... and of course, the winner gets $1k at ThinkGeek. Both the Ann Arbor and Silicon Valley parties were great. Much alcohol consumed. Old friends chatted with. New friends met. I hope many of you around the net got your t-shirts and had good times.

If even my underwater party wasn't enough to get any participants or even a T-shirt, I suppose it was T-shirts for the cool people with the big drinking parties... Wait a minute, so after 10 years, Slashdot has moved from geek style to grown-up frat boy? Popular people and alcohol get all the free stuff, and the nerds are left with nothing but an innate sense that they haven't sold out. ;)

Honestly, if nobody else even bothered to show up, what chance do I have of winning any cool people stuff? I didn't even have a camera diver, so I couldn't do the underwater birthday cake with candles that I'd prepped. (Note that disposable lighters don't work below about 35 feet or so, and the cake display was at 50 feet. Matches worked well in tests.)

*More* honestly, it's just a whole lot of bother, and I'm too lazy to deal with it for the mathematically infinitesimal chance of winning a prize. I'd be more likely to bother if there *weren't* a prize. I don't have to admit any of that, however, as the classic "I'm being oppressed" whine is far more in character for a random post pulled from the first ten years. I figure the least I can do is whine properly if I'm going to be too lazy to bother sending anything in so I can lose a contest. ;)

With a little hesitation, I walked over and said in a questioning way 'slashdot?...'. 'Yeah, sure' they said, invited me to sit down and shoved a beer in my face. The evening went by like a train with lots of laughter, drinks and I made a couple of pics. After one brunette apologized and went home, the other three exchanged meaningful glances and all of a sudden asked me to join them for a little after party.

We went to a grande discotheque close by. More drinks and loud music follewed, with really wild dancing. Again I shot lots of pics with my cam. I can't really repeat here what happened, but let me tell you, it was wild, WILD WILD like it was 1999. I used the 'video' feature of my photo camera to the max.

When I woke up and had a quick shower with the cute brunette with the curly hair, I went to work. I couldn't contain myself and spilled the story to my coworkers. We pulled the pics off the camera through the USB. I have a Linux workstation and had to reconnect the camera in order to get a connection. It was slow as molasses and reported an error halfway.I pointed Konqueror to the folder where the pics were uploaded and I'm like *WTF* all pics were completely garbled. What's worse, somehow the fucking KDE had ruined the pics on my camera as well. Down here in sunny Florida we had a great time. Everyone who signed up , showed up, and the party ran on for 2 hours past the scheduled end time. I got to meet another female /. member and actually our uid's were lower than most of them menfolk there. My guess is we definatly had the largest percentage of female slashdotters at a party. We cooked out and I made brownies for dessert. We basically sat around eating and talking about slashdot, Gnu/Linux, RMS, Microsoft , Google and weapons. (not necessarily in that order) While we won't be winning any prizes for coolest party it was a great idea and got us out from behind our screens and meeting face to face. A strange and wondrous new experience for us.

It was a good time in Colorado Springs, with new faces and familiar ones. Not everyone who signed up showed up, but about 10 of us kept the geek fire burning. Lots o games, geek trivia, geeky prizes (my comp since no /. schwag showed) and a darn good bartender. We may spin off a semi-regular geek-in to welcome those who were interested but couldn't attend. Slashdot gets a good start on the next 10!

The party was scheduled for 6pm-10pm & I arrived to Cakeshop late at 10pm. The staff at Cakeshop said they were on the third party of the night & that the geeks had left hours ago but outside, amongst the hipsters smoking, I was able to spot the party animals of the slashdot crowd maligning perl & discussing the New York Times database. We took a picture & I went back in to Cakeshop to enjoy the hipster heavy metal party. I closed out the bar & went home.

I too hosted a party and never heard from anybody at Slashdot. We had person show up who I think was there primarily for the free stuff. The rest of us just looked at it as a chance to get out and have a couple of brews.

  48. Paris party went well by anticypher · · Score: 1

Thanks to Vinz, we had a reasonably good party. Drinking Guinness in an Irish pub, a few attempts at video gaming with a wii, a nice dinner in a good restaurant, then attempts to get some classy photos of Paris with the slashdot logo. Much comparing of geekiness, what techie universes we travel in, a DSW of who has used computers the longest, and generally a good time had by all.

Only 8 of the 18 who signed up managed to make it. There was a serious transport strike during the first attempt at a party, as well as competing with crowds of drunken Rugby fans for space in an Irish pub. So the Paris party was delayed one week which cost us in participation. But I also know several /.ers who just didn't want to be photographed in the crowd of geeks.

A few of my photos I've put up on Flickr, and I'll try to get more of them processed and up later when time permits.
