I had never looked at idle before but clicked on it and checked it out. I was very disappointed that it is so bad. I love/. and have from the first day I started reading this site. I think the next/. Poll should ask the readers if it should be kept, moved somewhere else completely or taken down. The results would be something to bring to the next marketing meeting when the talking heads go on and on about re-branding to target gen y and beyond. I understand that/. is not a democracy and needs to generate a proft but alienating your loyal readership is not a good way to go about that.
I don't know why you were modded funny because I actually received this in my inbox at work this morning. I of course deleted it but was considering sending out a warning.
Many people set up an email account to use with an online dating site. 12% of recently married or engaged couples met online. People use a nickname or screen name with an email account to hide their identity and weed out potential dates and then only give their real name out if they were actually going to meet someone in person for a date.
That is not a nefarious purpose but it is a big privacy concern, especially if you are female.
I am surprised with all the comments no one has mentioned online stalking or harassment.
If you wanted a custom auto you would have to build it yourself or pay someone to do it for you.

"The report, brought before the ICANN board in New Delhi on Friday, did not examine a controversial practice by domain name seller Network Solutions LLC of grabbing names that people search for on its Web site but don't immediately register."
At least RMS has the courage of his convictions and stands up for what he believes in. RMS is a visionary genius and with all he has accomplished still takes the time to give encouragement to someone who is using Gnu/Linux for the first time.
Maybe you should read the comment about growing a pair and take a stand.
Down here in sunny Florida we had a great time. Everyone who signed up , showed up, and the party ran on for 2 hours past the scheduled end time. I got to meet another female/. member and actually our uid's were lower than most of them menfolk there. My guess is we definatly had the largest percentage of female slashdotters at a party.
We cooked out and I made brownies for dessert. We basically sat around eating and talking about slashdot, Gnu/Linux, RMS, Microsoft , Google and weapons. (not necessarily in that order)
While we won't be winning any prizes for coolest party it was a great idea and got us out from behind our screens and meeting face to face. A strange and wondrous new experience for us.
I had the exact same experience, only I had actually reserved the domain with credit card information but in the 3 days "processing" time it got scooped up only to be given back days later after I settled on my second choice.
It was a huge hassle , I had to go through an entire cancellation procedure with the first company. I refused to lookup the name that was my second choice and had a long talk with the hosting company on a strategy to keep it from getting scooped.
At the time I reported it to ICANN and this was the reply I received:
Thank you for your inquiry.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. The situation you described
is actually a somewhat common occurrence. There are individuals and
entities on the internet who register names in bulk (perhaps tens of
thousands per day), and by coincidence, names available one minute
might
not be available the next. Sometimes these names are deleted during
the add-grace period, so you might find that the name is available if you
check back in about 5 days (the grace period is five days long). (the
decision whether to keep or delete a name is often based on the amount
of traffic that domain receives, so if you decide to wait out the five
days and try again, it would be best not to visit the website hosted at
the domain during that time.)
I hope this information is helpful.
Best Regards,
ICANN
While I appreciated their taking the time to reply I wish there was a way we could vote to do away with this practice. If anyone knows of a way to accomplish this , please let me know.
thanks
I use FireFox with linux and wish they would improve the manage bookmarks part of the browser. I don't find it to be very intuitive and managed to wipe out an entire section of bookmarks. If you click a folder full of bookmarks and click cut , you can not paste it. They are lost forever. Not Mac specific but it would be nice if it got fixed for linux:)
Where I live the average 5 year old has been using a computer for 3 years already. Even my 2 year old has her favorite website (Sesamestreet.org)
I would set up one computer at a special desk. Make the kids sign up to use it, they will learn about taking turns. Have filtered net access that only allows them to go to a few websites. Parents here have to sign a permission form , you might want to check with your lawyer.
If you are teaching a class where the children have had no exposure to computers, I would begin by setting one up, explaining what it does and teaching them the names of each piece ie: mouse, monitor etc
Since you already have the webcams set up,do you let them watch themselves?
I was suprised no one mentioned this but set up a web-cam so the parents can log in and watch from work or from home. You can have it on all the time or just for a specified group time. Alot of daycares here do this, it helps involve the parents in their child's life.
I wonder if you have spoken to a lawyer about turning over that information. I did support for a public library where someone had sent an email bomb threat. Like in your above mentioned example we could trace it back to the exact computer. At that time people signed in paper logs to use the computers, on the advice of legal councel those logs are destroyed and never allowed to be turned over to any other agency.
It is an interesting legal problem. I wonder if the above mentioned university legal representative would have them turn over the logs also.
Great news!
