Sonic The Hedgehog Coming to the iPod

mrneutron2003 writes "Sega has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog will be a new gaming option on the iPod. They're looking to charge about 4.99 for the classic title. 'Support is slated for the iPod nano with video, iPod classic, and fifth generation iPods ... Sega hopes that tremendous install base of the iPod family will lend to exposing a whole new audience to the old time wonders of Sonic The Hedgehog. The game has apparently been redesigned with the iPod in mind and should provide good port experience.'"

That's not exactly going to have a very good control system, most likely, I for one would like to at least press two buttons at the same time to move and jump.

    ( o ) - all your buttons.

    Here's to hoping I'm wrong!

I Think it could work. Hold your finger at the top of the wheel, that's neutral position. Slide to the right, sonic goes right. slide to the left, sonic goes left. With your other hand, slide you should be able to stick your thumb in place to press the click button. It may not be optimal, but I could see it working well. I'm not sure if this is the control scheme that they are using, but that's just what I thought up in the first 30 seconds. I'm sure somebody who was being paid to make the control scheme to work could come up with a much better idea.

I own PacMan on the iPod, and you don't need to slide, you just need to touch the direction you want to go. My guess is that you'll run in whatever direction you touch, if you let up on the click wheel you'll stop, and touching either the menu or play keys will cause you to jump. Pretty simple control scheme actually.

Yeah, I only have 3 games for my iPod (Solitaire, Circle Arkanoid, iPod Quiz) because those are the ones that came with it. So having not much experience with iPod games, it's the first thing that popped into my head. I like your solution also. Sounds a little simpler than mine. Here's a better idea, that nice little plug on the bottom where you hook up the USB cable would be perfect for plugging in a secondary controller that could be used for games. If somebody put out one of those for the iPod, I think iPod gaming could really take off. With their install base, they might even be able to take on Nintendo.

Rockbox is free open source firmware for DAPs that allows you to play Doom! Granted the frame rate is a little juddery and the controls aren't laid out perfectly, but who cares? It's Doom! On an ipod! Every geek on slashdot should be drooling at the thought!

I supposed I should also point out at this moment that Rockbox also supports, among many, many other things:

-Voice driven menus for the visually impaired
-A gameboy and gameboy colour emulator
-Over 15 sound codecs, including ogg and flac
    -Gapless playback
    -Replaygain
    -A five band parametric equalizer
-Dual booting with original firmware and others, including ipodlinux.

And runs on the following architectures:

-Apple: 1st through 5.5th generation iPod, iPod Mini and 1st generation iPod Nano
(not the Shuffle, 2nd/3rd gen Nano, Classic or Touch)
-Archos: Jukebox 5000, 6000, Studio, Recorder, FM Recorder, Recorder V2 and Ondio
    -Cowon: iAudio X5, X5V, X5L, M5 and M5L
    -iriver: H100, H300 and H10 series
-SanDisk: Sansa c200, e200 and e200R series (not the v2 models)
-Toshiba: Gigabeat X and F series (not the S series)

More are in development. Unfortunately there isn't likely to be a port for 6th generation ipods for a very long time, if ever, due to the firmware encryption present on these devices.

More information is available on the rockbox home page, at http://www.rockbox.org/
