A Look At the Tools Used To Make Metal Gear Solid 4

Soft Image is running a detailed story about the making of Metal Gear Solid 4. They explain the game's development cycle, from the art direction to the animation of characters to the building of models and textures. "In terms of bones used for constructing the bodies of characters, about 21 joint bones were used that contained animation data and were activated through these data. But many auxiliary bones were also used to supplement movements such as the twisting of knees, elbows, legs and arms. These were not activated by animation data. Rather, they were linked to the values of the basic joints that were activated by animation. ... They also used a tool to automatically generate the rig for controlling eyeball movement and the muscles around the eyes. Because the area around the eyes is also controlled using both shapes and bones, when the eyeball locator is moved, the muscles move smoothly just like they do for the mouth. Further, even if the shape is edited to redefine the eye edges, it does not spoil the blinking or brow furrow expressions at all."

    Never played the games, never been near a console game.

    I had a friend once explain that the "metal gear solid" is a reference to one of the characters, someone called "Solid Snake" and the fighting robot suit called "metal gear". Apparently theres also someone named "Liquid Snake".

    What I've always wondered is... are these names some kind of wierd Japanese toilet humor?

      The original (2D) game was just called "Metal Gear". You played as "Solid Snake", and were trying to destoroy the ultimate weapon "Metal Gear". That made sense to me, even if the name Solid Snake seemed unfitting for a high-tech soldier.

      I've always taken the "solid" moniker in the name to mean that the game had moved to 3D, and now had a solid environment instead of a flat one. After all, the second one is not called "Metal Gear Raiden" or anything.

      Of course none of this answers your question. I've wondered myself, to be honest ;-)

    I've played all other versions of MetalGear Solid and loved them. Thought it is one of the best games on the market. Haven't played MGS 4 because I refuse to pay the high price for a PS3 - however I have a hard time believing the comments above, especially that by swotl.

    I for one am interested in the piece on how they made the game and can't wait until the price on PS3s falls into the range I am comfortable with so I can purchase and play what is probably the best series of games bar none.

      Or, you could just watch all of the cut scenes on YouTube since MGS4 is mostly cut scenes anyway!

      As Ethanol-fueled said, there are A LOT of cut scenes. I think the cut scenes at the end alone added up to about an hour and a half.

      I enjoyed it, though.

      As far as the whole series goes, I would probably rate Snake Eater #1, Sons of Liberty #2, Guns of the Patriots #3, MGS #4, and MG #5. I never did play Solid Snake.

      Rating the original #5 is a bit deceptive. I played it to death when it came out and enjoy it every time I have played it since, but I really like the complexity (CQC, sneaking being harder and more integral, choosing not to kill, etc.) of MGS2, 3, and 4. I also rated it below MGS because MGS started the theatrical story line.

      Just like the previous MGS games, except they were codec conversations instead of cut scenes. So if he did enjoy them I would guess he will also enjoy MGS4, so no need to spoil it.

    After the steaming pile of shit that DMC4 and GTA4 turned out to be due to being downgraded to support the gimped 360 with its wimpy graphics hardware and smaller than last gen 7gigabyte DVD drive it scary to think what would have happend to Kojima's masterpiece if he was forced to downgrade MGS4 in the same way.

    It is amazing to see what game developers can accomplish when they aren't faced with the nightmare of writing games for the 360.

      There never was any chance that Konami was going to downgrade MGS4 to be able to run on the massively weaker 360 hardware.

      The gigantic graphical power advantage the PS3 has over the 360 is unlike any previous gen. Last gen the PS2,GameCube,and Xbox all could pump out roughly 15-20 million polys for high end games. The PS2 had sizeable floating point/number crunching advantage and fill rate advantage, while the Xbox was better at multipass rendering(making stuff bumpy/shiny), and the GameCube had its very fast RAM.

      The GameCube was gimped with storage just like the 360 is this gen, but unlike the 360 the GameCube could easily hold its own graphically compared to the other two consoles.

      The 360 is the first console ever to be totally outclassed in every single area by its competition:

      Storage space
      Floating point
      Fillrate
      Poly rate
      and on and on and on

      The 360 with its last gen storage space and 10 megs of EDRAM designed for 480p 4xAA output really isn't a next gen console. It's what can go terribly wrong with console hardware design when you are forced to rush something out the door like the 360 was by Microsoft.

      You could really notice differences with RE4 and Twilight Princess that the cube more powerful than the PS2 and almost as good as the Xbox.

      Nintendo screwed up on the gimmped storage in the case of 3rd parties. Nintendo had some very sweet graphics compression technologies that they didn't want to share with their 3rd parties so you had crap like 2 disc games.

      I must say though, I dont see much of a difference between the PS3 and 360, look at Burnout Paradise that was designed for the PS3 and ported to 360. Dont see a huge difference, most games are made for the 360 and ported to the PS3 where the 360 version looks better.

      I dont see much differneces between MSG4, GoW, CoD4 graphics wise. I am currently playing MGS4 and from what I have seen, so far it seems the 360 could handle it. As for Blu-Ray? They dont bother compressing, I suspect most of that data filling up the Blu Ray is just raw uncompressed data, it's just being lazy.

      In the case of RE4,I totally agree. I got a cube late to the party and was disappointed at some of the games' graphics, but then I played RE4 and I thought, holy shit, why can't other devs do this? Was it all ninty's fault?

    If I had mod points, I'd mod you redundant. This is said on almost every slashdot article involving game technologies. Yes, we all know that gameplay is more important than graphics, can you please find something new and interesting to say? Or do you need the guaranteed "insightful" karma?

    Just because gameplay (just a stupid term btw, since every one has their own definition of it) is more important doesn't mean that developers shouldn't spend resources on trying to get past the uncanny valley, since it is a real problem for games that are trying to achieve a realistic look.

    I thought MGS4 was actually a lot of fun. It was different from the first three (and I loved the first three, mind you), but it stayed the same in a lot of important ways. The people complaining about cutscenes obviously haven't played...oh...any of the Metal Gear Solid series or something, because they're always long as hell (and done with the kind of panache that makes the length OK, for me at least).

    Softimage [sic] is a company that makes 3D modeling and animation software. As such, their part of the story isn't related to gameplay at all, which is why only art and related programming was mentioned.

    Huh? What game was that you played? Did you have any specific complaints about the gameplay features or are you happy to just say "IT SUXORZ!" and leave it at that? I had the chance to play this about a week ago and found it possibly the coolest gaming experience I've ever seen. Granted, I've not played hundreds of other PS2/PS3 games so my console experience is a bit limited. I also played this on a 61" HDTV with a nice big surround system with a large subwoofer, so the immersion was superb. I found the movement, camera control and weapon/item usage models very well done. I also found the switches between the scripted parts and the gameplay parts about as seamless as they get. The HUD clarity and ease of use was very good. I did not run into any spots where I got "glitched" and stuck on terrain objects or any areas where I had to reload a savegame due to bugs. /shrug...I liked it a lot.

    1. Find a topic discussing the technology of a recent game.
    2. Ignore the fact that you are a geek, and deride said technology.
    3. Justify said derision by arguing that this new technology does not make the game "more fun."
    4. Ignore the fact that fun is (oftentimes) more reliant on the creativity and imagination of the game designers than the work done by rendering engine programmers and artists.
    5. Hand in your geek card, because for some reason you don't think attempting to approach Pixar-quality animation using commodity hardware is totally awesome.

    (Note, I do not have a PS3 and have never played any of the Metal Gear series of games. However, this is an interesting article about the nuts and bolts of game development. Treat it as such, not as a soapbox for your opinions on how fun or not fun particular games are.)

    I rather feel artificially full after eating Chinese food with MSG than be left mentally empty after playing MGS. Who sits around watching every muscle in the players. Does that make a game more realistic? Spend more time on making a fully animated environment. I want to see flies bugging me once in a while. How about a bird that can be blown to bits (feathers showering down) because it's sitting on a fence and I can do it without PETA coming after me? Put in the occassional bee stinging one of the fellow players on the butt for entertainment value. That will make it more real that an eye twitch.

      I dunno about 4, but that you could shoot as many pigeons as you could see in MGS2. It's not entirely malicious, as you usually do it as revenge after they cause you to plummet to your death. Back on topic, I agree, as do most players, that games don't have to have cutting-edge graphics to sell well, as long as they have decent game play and story, although it definitely doesn't hurt. Metal Gear Solid games, however, have always presented themselves as a more of a playable movie than as a pure game, and made no apologies about it. Concentrating on the graphics doesn't seem to be an mistake in this situation, given the type of game being made.

      Are you serious? I've found that MGS is better for this kind of thing than most games. You could snipe birds and rats, and you needed to lead them sort of realistically (except for your always-perfect aim which ignores wind). And yes, the birds do spray a few feathers and gore upon a hit (unless you tranq'ed them). That and the fact that you can get stung by hornets in MGS3 actually makes you think you posted facetiously, but whatever.

      One good example of this kind of detail is in MGS2, almost on the level of an easter egg. If you lobbed a grenade or set off C4 on a patch of sea lice and immediately switched to first-person view, a random number of bugs would "spatter" against your screen and drip down. Note that you have practically no reason to use FPV in such a situation, so it's there purely for "completeness".

      Yeah, maybe it is mentally empty. The pop-philosophy never appealed to me that much, but the storyline is reasonable if a bit over the top sometimes (again, MGS2). It's an action video game, just a fairly intricate one.

    I know Microsoft isn't in the same league as Sony in designing console hardware. The first Xbox was just a bunch of very expensive to manufacture desktop PC parts thrown into a big ugly black box and the second Xbox is universally regarded as the worst console in the history of gaming.

    However, the utterly braindead EDRAM design that is only large enough for 480p framebuffers is just inexplicable. It's a giant fuck you to game developers who are faced with having their game be filled with jaggies due to 720p buffers having no space left over in the 10megs of EDRAM for AA buffers or waste time, effort, and performance writing a tile based renderer just for the damn 360 just to get something that should be just a switch. Idiots.

    Hopefully the rumors are true that Microsoft is throwing in the towel in the console market and returning to focus completely on the PC gaming market.

    It's almost three years into the 360's disastrous life and the 'graphical showpiece' for the 360 isn't some amazing first party title, it's a game running on the fucking outdated Unreal Engine 3.

    What's even more pathetic about the absurdly underpowered 360 graphics hardware is even running the Doom 3 era UE3 engine Epic still had to limit the number of objects/enemies onscreen to usually just a few and confine the player to tiny corridors and rooms and even outside the background draw distance is absurdly tiny with everything beyond the immediate foreground blurred out with a vaseline type filter.

    Hell, the 360's botched graphics hardware couldn't even handle the unified lighting model Doom 3 had three to four years ago.

    Epic Fail.

      I am no Microsoft fanboy however for the record I admit to being a Dreamcast fanboy! I am a Linux user and I own all 3 consoles. I just dont take my Linux fanboyism to the level of Twitter

      Emotional much? Oh and where is the PS3's killer app? That blows the 360's graphics out of the water? I am waiting? No one denies that the PS3 has more horsepower, however we are talking about a complex chip that will (like the PS2) take a whole generation to unlock. No one has the means to produce anything more meaningful than what the 360 can do. Even Uncharted (the only good first party title) doesn't offer a richer visual experience.

      Btw I will give Sony credit, they have one good first party title while Microsoft have none. However almost all major 3rd party titles (CoD4, Assassins Creed, Orange Box, Rainbow Six Vegas, Oblivion etc all look better on the 360

Who's the fanboy? Most draw distances in Gears were outdoors and more than what Resistance had without 10 loading screens per level (a.k.a MSG4)

      If UE3 engine is so obsolete? Than why is it still being licenced like crazy, even Square is using it!

      Hell, the 360's botched graphics hardware couldn't even handle the unified lighting model Doom 3 had three to four years ago. I played Doom 3 on Linux, and I must say: Lighting model? What lighting? The game was dark as shit you couldnt actually see anything without a pissy flashlight that you could't use if trying to shoot something!

      I must say, the language and attitude seems to indicate you are a Sony fanboy and the fact that you posted AC I am pretty sure you know the common oppinion will be the same. I love both consoles and think they do quite well, but I must say...

      If the PS3 is such a mega powerhouse that's a generation ahead of the 360 that you seem to claim that it is... where's PS3 Crysis? (which btw doesn't require Blu-Ray)

      Because EA bought RenderWare leaving a giant hole in the console market that was filled with whatever other crap was out there. Gamebryo and Epic's UE3 are pretty the only options until another RenderWare type company comes along.

      UE3 is a complete piece of shit. Unfortuneately Gamebryo is a piece of shit in a different way.

    I have my playstation account. Cool, but that isn't good enough. I sign into my playstation account and now I have to sign into a konami account? Uh, ok. That's great, I guess they wanted something that the playstation account couldn't provide.

    Yeah, I played MGS4 online one time and decided not to bother again. Three login screens was too much for a mediocre game. Oh, and you can only have one character, but for the low low price of $10 you can customize a second!

    We are doing something similar in MK vs DC Universe. Our Superheroes, Villians, and Kombatants have muscles that flex and move based on the position of other joints. This is done in Maya through "Set Driven Keys" and implemented in the game through a custom-runtime. It cuts down on the animation data required for an extremely large skeleton and it looks much more natural (biceps flex when arm bends). It's a win in both the memory footprint and visuals.

    The cost comes with processing time and developer time for the implementation. The Maya rule set is in rotation angles and linear offsets. There is a conversion cost for going back and forth between the angular coordinate systems of quaternion (stored), matrix (render), and Euler (muscle system) spaces. There are weird Euler Angle rules for dealing with issues like singularities and major axis inversion make it a bit of a pain to implement if you store your data as (compressed) quaternions.
