I think what the guys over at "Openleaks" thought is true, and that is the fact Assange has taken so much of the limelight, that many people confuse Assange as Wikeleaks as being the same thing. Whether it helps or hurts I am not sure.

I actually was interested in getting a Wikileaks mug, but all they had is stuff that you had to wear in public.

I disagree, it's at most distracting from their mission by giving cable news fluff to focus on rather than the actual important stuff, but Fox news reporting on alleged rapes rather than the corruption they exposed was never the goal. If they ever release the incriminating documents on bank of America, and they prove actually incriminating or surprising (as opposed to stuff like "they're incompetent and abusive to customers" which we knew already), the Assange circus won't prevent that.

If the documents prove Bank of America is intentionally, systematically stealing houses by foreclosing on them improperly, Assange could have a sex webcam show and yet wikileaks will still have been quite effective. Bank of America would still have to face the music. Or rather, Bank of America would get a slap on the wrist, but that's not because of Assange, and a slap on the wrist for bad behavior is still slightly better than nothing at all.

That said, I really hope he doesn't put on a sex show. Bad mental images...

Openleaks seems like the wrong approach, though.

They say they won't publish anything, only send it to newspapers. But that means that things only get published if a newspaper finds it interesting enough to publish, and they probably won't post the entire source document either. And if nobody is willing to post it, nobody will ever see it.

I'm fine with wikileaks alternatives and don't particularly care about Assange, but I want raw data, and lots of it. And no dependence on media organizations.

I was kind of looking forward to what was supposed to be a release that involved "major scandals of some of the world's largest financial players." Have we heard anything about that stuff recently?

he has been talking them up for months now. for the diplomatic cable releases he talked about them for months and months and months before anything was released., and when it was released all it showed was standard international politics and gossip for the most part.

If he was releasing data to benefit everyone why is his face on a shirt? he shouldn't have anything to do but redact documents and make sure the servers are running.

There should be no single point of failure in something like wikileaks. but that point is Julian. Remove Julian(peacefully ) from the scene and wikileaks will be a lot better of an organization. The single greatest thing George Washington did wasn't build the USA or help found the government or drive the british out. It was stepping down and letting go of the power. Julian will never do such a thing on his own.

I did a google search to make sure they hadn't been released. The most recent news on it was from early February that it might be kind of boring, a dud. Anyway, I too am waiting for it and am wondering why they don't release it now.

There were those of us that pointed out that he was a meglomaniac and would eventually destroy Wikileaks in his desire to be the Central Poomba. Everyone that pointed this out was marked as Trolls by the blind followers. Anyone that didn't notice that this was all about him wasn't paying attention. All the money is donated to him, not the movement. He's actually tried to claim ownership of the leaks and he was livid when someone leaked information about himself but he was perfectly willing to leak informants names even if they ended up dead. He only stopped when Amnesty pointed out it made him a murderer, and he didn't stop because people would die, only because of the bad press.

I don't watch Fox news and I still don't know about corruption they exposed. Please, could you list some of the things. As far as I know, most all of the leaks were benign and the ones that weren't seemed to subject to much interpretation in order to be damaging.

As for your point on Bank of America, it appears that you are wishing for bad news and do not have any insight that isn't already publicly available. You are complaining that there isn't more news that you want to hear and all you do hear is something you dismiss it seems.

I think it's time to step back and do a reality check.

What is unreasonable is to go to war for false pretenses and create a situation where humans for whose wellbeing you are responsible have to become schizophrenics to continue functioning.

Fair enough. However, I believe you're simply muddying the waters. To talk about the rush of adrenaline during combat does not imply over-all enjoyment of the exercise. One can feel the thrill of the moment and, after it passes, realize and feel the negative aspects of those actions. Making war for profit has no place in this conversation.

I should note that I suspect the entire conversational thread is based on a somewhat disingenuous pretext. I don't believe Assange claimed that "killing is fun" in so many words - his claim is that civilian deaths were because of taking "pleasure by getting a high score." I don't doubt body counts are a part of the reality of that environment. But I find this claim to be ignorant on Assange's part.

Again - these are two separate issues. The soldier having to go against norms of civilized society to be effective in (much less survive) an uncivilized situation has little to do with society choosing to put a soldier in that situation. You're confusing the two by trying to link them. And you're doing an injustice to society and soldiers by doing so. Society should understand that war is always hellish no matter what reasons are involved. And with that understanding, there should be much gravity to the decision to wage it.

I agree that this is all rather over-simplified. But that's part of my criticism of quips made by Assange. The issues Assange bring up are complex. But Assange is either ignorant of that complexity or realizes that complex doesn't make very good propaganda.

I've already received my shirts a week ago. so at least those are real.

When I contacted them with some questions I was responded to from an address of wikileaks.de which my server said was sent from an email server at wl.datendetektei.de. Their email server is also a mirror of the wikileaks site and the main wikileaks site lists wl.datendetektei.de as an official mirror site. I would think that this means that this is as legit as that faction is.

According to the shop-info, the email address shown as a contact is @wikileaks.de which according to DENIC whois-info is owned by Theodor Reppe, a German Wikileaks supporter. Although not a very smart one, as a quick Google search reveals.
I wouldn't bet on this being completely legit.

I have a flatmate who works for Spreadshirt and while he's not directly involved with this, I understand from him that there have been email exchanges with Wikileaks regarding setting up the store. Also the Wikileaks Twitter account tweeted a link to the store a week or so back.

There are soo many leaks sites running around now that Assange won't "control the market" anymore. Imho, Assange deserves credit for pushing this cultural shift, both by trying to make an uncrackable publication chain and by putting himself on the line going after the U.S. I'll buy a shirt with his face for that.

You'll notice however that Anonymous' HBGary hackers didn't bother protecting their anonymity by gong through wikileaks, they just handled it themselves using proxies, friends, public wifi, etc. If enough hacks and leaks are occurring, and we're explaining reasonable precautions to people, then maybe Assange's leaker protections aren't all that important. And we've all heard how wikileaks backlog is just brutal, even when they still accepted material.

I've been noticing that images of Assange in the media have been growing increasingly messianic. He's essentially been turned into this dapper stud. I think Wikileaks is great, but I have a huge problem with the way this one twit, who seems to have a massive ego, is getting all the credit.

Wow. I see a lot of funny comments, but also a lot of whiny bitches. *cry* Assange is a media whore! Assange is a poser! Assange is this, Assange is that */cry* Really? Does anyone read what they type before they hit submit?

1) The shirts with his face aren't the only item in the store. I bought a hat that says Wikileaks on it, along with a shirt that says the same. You don't have to buy the one with the pic of his face on it. (Frankly, the shirt with his face on it IS kinda on the creepy side. Not sure who would buy that shirt, Assange fan-boy or not. But that doesn't make the whole idea of wikileaks selling stuff wrong.)

2) Not sure what the big deal is. WikiLeaks needs $, just like any other organization, in order to keep the leaks flowing. Nobody is forcing you to buy a shirt with Assange's face on it. In fact, nobody is forcing you to buy anything at all.

3) Assange fan-club or not, WikiLeaks has provided, and will hopefully continue to provide, insight into the shady dealings of governments and military's . They have done more good than bad. Who cares if Assange likes media attention? If WikiLeaks never had media attention, then the leaks would be MEANINGLESS. Assange never asked for rape charges to be drummed up and then covered to DEATH by every major media outlet. And he has, for the most part, used the media coverage to dispel the lies and get the word out about WikiLeaks and the content of the actual leaks.

4) How is it a bad thing they are doing this? This store is most likely in response to their other means of funding being shut down! Remember how you used to be able to donate through paypal? Well now you can donate by buying a freaking Assange shirt. Either support them or shut up. I really don't see another reason to try and call Assange a media whore again. That isn't what the store is about. It's about funding wikileaks.

I'd buy something, not because I want to support wikileaks, more for the absurdity of it. Two things stop me; the big one it has his face as the brand, not some super 1337 logo, second I live in a military town and I would face getting my ass kicked by some 11B's, third (I know, I said two) I anti-support (yes I think he is an enemy of the USA, yes I think there should be state secrets, yes I also think there should SOMETIMES be leaks, but not like this).

Biohazard! t-shirt

The store was linked on Slashdot previously. If you go to page 4 you will see a black t-shirt with only the biohazard logo sans "Courage is Contagious". I emailed the store and requested such a T-shirt, as I noticed they had another product with just the logo. Twenty minutes later, it was online and I ordered it. The shirt arrived yesterday and it is beautiful! The drippy planet in the middle is a shiny silver, which means I get to wear a bauble. Win.
