iPhone 4S Has Been Jailbroken, Hack Enables Siri on iPhone 4

If Apple does something remarkable, or if somebody does something remarkable with Apple products, then by all means post such a story. This sort of article doesn't qualify, however. It's just about people who were stupid enough to buy a product that they have to intentionally "break" in order to use it to its full potential. That's not newsworthy in any way.
The rest of us are smart enough to not buy such devices. We won't fall into that trap. So how about giving us some useful articles for a change? There has got to be some interesting discovery relating to physics, for instance. Or maybe some mathematical breakthrough. Hell, even a shitty Drupal book review is better than this Apple nonsense.

Since there's not much of a technical reason the iPhone 4 cannot have Siri, I think a big part of why it's only on the 4s (and not even the iPad 2) is to help Apple understand server load from the service before it goes live for 100 million+ people.
I am thinking early next year Siri will be rolled out to iPhone 4 and iPad 2 owners (it may be the 3Gs is too old to handle it properly, as some audio cleanup and compression is probably done on the phone before transmission). Possibly it would even be iOS5 wide.

Are you kidding? It's a big part of the product differentiation for the iPhone 4s. They just launched the iPhone 4s and made a big deal out of the new voice assistant, Siri. They want people to buy the iPhone 4s for the new voice assistant, Siri. And you're wondering if the reason that they only make the new voice assistant, Siri, available for the iPhone 4s, the phone you'll have to buy if you you want the new voice assistant, is because they want to understand server load???
That and IP licences; I don't see apple willing to negotiate for several million already sold and budgeted devices on what may be an interesting IP package; much easier to account into the new devices.

And maybe the reason it's not on the iPad 2 is that the microphone is crapshoot compared to the iPhone, because the iPad never needed one as good (with ambiant noise canceling and such).
I know dictation software on desktops is very sensitive to the microphone quality, so it would not surprise me.
As for the iPhone 4, well if you want to sell the new one and the not the old one for 99$, it makes sense to keep the "bleeding edge" stuff for the 4S.

I might be wrong but I don't think they bought Siri on a per device license. as far as the ipad2 it's not that surprising, the iPhone 4 has a more limited voice control that does not exist on either iPad model.
That is not how you use the word "crapshoot".
Then you will want the 5 for more gpu, cpu, 64 bit and the next gen of games that will never work on any 4 ect.....

Apple does this CONSTANTLY - they leave features out of their early versions of things just so a year later they can release the same hardware BUT WITH A CAMERA ADDED and idiot Apple fans will then plunk down another $500 for the new version.
They might own siri, but not all the related possible IP issues (including database sources; there's some deal with yahoo and their YQL servers...). Think Android manufacturers and Microsoft.
That's not to say you're wrong either; there's not one simple reason for doing things in business.

I don't think you are aware of the HUGE data center Apple has built.
The fact is that even with a massive data center, you don't really know until everything goes live how everything will respond. And in fact there were some Siri drops in the first day or so.
After a little while they know what kind of load the servers can take, how often generally people use Siri, how much real bandwidth the system as a whole takes. With this understanding in hand they can add servers intelligently to handle a full load, instead of just throwing hardware at a load issue while everyone on earth is complaining that nothing works.
Remember Apple is very concerned about user experience, so it's only natural they would be cautious about launching this so it would work for a limited number of people instead of poorly for all.

But they also continue to sell the iPhone 4, and even the 3Gs. Yes it is something of a differentiator but a new customer would likely end up with a 4s anyway, if for no other reason than the camera is much better.
I'm not saying that marketing was not also a factor, but I am thinking that even if that were taken out Siri would have launched iPhone 4s only for valid technical reasons.
As I said, I think later the spread of devices that can use it will get wider.

That plausible but I'd suspect a couple other reasons too. First, when you rollout something new you want to make sure it does not get a reputation for sucking. One way to do this is to roll it out only on the best machines. And also as you say a smaller foot print helps control things. Second, I'd bet it is full of debugging code and is not optimized. It is known already it chews batteries. If you put this on older phones with tired batteries it's going to get a bad reputation.
So there's reasons besides the naked one of forcing upgrades.

I think considering that the iPad 2, which has a faster processor than the 4s doesn't have Siri, this is a very strong probability.
I'm annoyed that I haven't found much in the app store that takes advantage of the new processor.

I've read the GP's post several times now, and I see absolutely no mention of Android or any other non-Apple mobile OS. The only one trying to turn this into an Android-versus-iOS "religious war", as you put it, is you.
You don't even stop to consider how irrelevant this so-called news truly is. The adoption of smartphones has reached saturation levels in most developed countries, and even in many developing ones. Even with many millions of devices out there today, there are still far fewer of them than there are desktops, laptops, netbooks and servers. Mobile computing is such a small percentage of all computing that it's basically irrelevant. Sure, it gets a lot of press and media hype, but it's still quite irrelevant.
Furthermore, many of the major mobile OSes are merely just Linux. Linux isn't anything new or special. We've had various forms of embedded Linux for many years now. Likewise, there's nothing remarkable about iOS other than that it's a very locked-down platform.
The GP has been wrongly modded down to -1, but his plea for relevant news stories here is a valid one. We come here to read interesting news that we can't find elsewhere. We don't come here to read useless details about comparatively minor operating systems in a comparatively minor segment of the computing market.

That's a rather generous interpretation of Apple's motivation. Another interpretation might be that they needed to differentiate their minor hardware upgrade to convince iPhone 4 owners that it was worth upgrading.

You mean much like the vast majority of ALL phone manufacturer's don't upgrade their hardware OS? I think the few that do (Google's and a tiny handful of others that have introduced at least one OS update) are the exception (Apple not included of course).
Please don't pretend that Apple is evil and all other manufacturer's are good when they all hold a carrot out when releasing new models. Given this is a single feature that may or may not be rolled out to the earlier iPhone 4's (the 3GS doesn't have two mic's for noise cancelation), it's a reasonable sales technique. I'm also mindful that Siri is still beta and that it may still hit the older '4' model once they understand the load and impact on the infrastructure. Given the 100+ million iPhone users, I'd be hesitant to pull the switch on all models. Introducing this on new models makes sense and any person who works in IT would consider that a valid approach.
At least Apple upgrades their iPhone OS's for years until they get to the point where performance becomes an issue due to older hardware, where most other vendors never bother to supply any updates, regardless of phone capability.
This is a primary reason Android will probably never gain any traction in a business environment. They never address any security issues exposed in the OS on a consistent basis (no vendor updates), and given the hodgepodge of versions, and the multitudes of hardware flavors, it would be an IS Security nightmare trying to keep track of which ones were compliant and which were not.

Since when? I've read everything I 'know' about os/2 from slashdot. Heck, linux, *bsd, and Sun news have always been covered here. Mobile computing and mobile OSes are just another step on the trail. It may be annoying that there's more activity with the new OSes, but that doesn't make them irrelevant.

No doubt I'll be wrong in some spectacular way but my guess is that it'll be a paid option for the iPhone 4 and iPad 2. If that's correct it'll probably cost Apple's usual "token" amount of $10 or so.

My brain may be addled, but I believe I was using Siri as a stand-alone app on my 3GS already, before it was bought up by Apple? As it's own app, it was not as good as the integrated thing it has become, but it was okay for searches. I also was using Apple's own voice recognition on my 3GS 2 years ago to dial numbers or "call home" or what not. Wasn't terribly good, which is why I hardly used it, but all I had to do was press and hold down the single button until it came up.
The reason it's not on the 3GS/4 is to make it an exclusive feature on the 4s as a reason to upgrade to it. Not that I care. I bought mine on the features it had at the time, not future promises. What make the 4s worth my while is the factory unlocked version coming to the US in November that's compatible with all networks (Verizon, Sprint, ATT, GSM worldwide). Since I travel internationally to a select few countries, I'm really anticipating a phone where I can swap out native sim cards at will, so I don't have to pay the ridiculous international roaming fees or carry 2 phones.
But they also continue to sell the iPhone 4, and even the 3Gs. Yes it is something of a differentiator but a new customer would likely end up with a 4s anyway, if for no other reason than the camera is much better.

Factory unlocked phones don't work with Verizon or Sprint according to Apple's website. However Verizon has confirmed they will unlock after 60 days for international GSM use. Sprint has issued a pair of completely confusing statements that indicate they will unlock, relock, unlock or something like that.
FYI, the unlocked version is GSM-only. (Fine print at the bottom of http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone/iphone4s )

Siri was, of course, available as an app for iPhones going back to the original 2G, correct? And on 4S launch day, Apple (having bought Siri from the original developer) disabled Siri for everyone who was already using it, in a naked attempt to force their loyal fanbase to upgrade, if I'm not mistaken? It's amazing to me how Apple fanboys can continue to stay so fanatically loyal after every punch in the beanbag from Cupertino.
Oh okay. They changed the wording on that since I looked at it when the 4s first came out and it seemed to be able to use all carriers. Too bad I can't use all US carriers.
I cannot imagine Apple ever considered the possibility that people would upgrade to a 4S from a 4. A 3GS, probably. A 3, most definitely. But definitely not a 4. No I do not have an iPhone. And, no, I know of no one who has even considered the possibility of upgrading their 1 year old phone so they can get Siri...
I was pretty disappointed, too. I'd like to be able to easily try out different carriers, or get a prepaid US SIM for times when Sprint has poor service while I'm travelling. Unfortunately, I suspect that the reason for the lockdowns is totally to do with the carriers.

Some probably would upgrade. After all, some people have unlimited money for all intents and purposes in this discussion. But mainly I think it is a product differentiator for new customers or the old customers that are upgrading from an older iPhone to one of the newer ones.
I recently upgraded from an iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4. The reason I didn't go with the 4s is that it was more expensive and the faster CPU and Siri didn't really appeal to me.
I don't believe the faster CPU and GPU are a big sell on their own to the general public. Apple needed some VISIBLE new feature to differentiate the 4s. They came up with Siri, which TBH currently appears a little dumb to me.

Yes, I've heard Dan Benjamin complain on one of his podcasts that there's some disruption of Siri services when there's a large influx of users, such as when the US east coast wakes up. So this would seem to be at least part of the reasoning.

I doubt if Apple will roll it out to older iPhones. Siri is not just an application, it is a service, which Apple has chosen to charge for as part of the purchase price of the iPhone 4s. I suppose Apple could offer it as an extra-cost option for older devices, but I suspect that this would not win them any points with owners of those devices. So it makes more sense for Apple to treat it simply as a feature of the iPhone 4s. I suppose Apple might consider adding it to the iPad 2, which was released not long before the iPhone 4s, but it wouldn't surprise me if they decided to reserve it for their phone line.
And it's not as if owners of older devices are not getting new features with iOS 5--just not this one.
This was my thought exactly. Siri is still listed as a product in beta, and all the logic is cloud-based. Sales of the 4S exceeded expectations, and I don't think it's a coincidence that last week several users across the country were reporting frequent problems with Siri connecting to the network. There's really not a lot of work done on the client, so there's no reason that Siri would not be available on any device capable of running iOS5 when it goes GA. If it shows promise, expect it to be open to all devices. If not, expect it to fade into obscurity.
It's a beta. This reduces the initial load until they can tune the servers.
You know, the same way Google limited the early beta test of Google+... but I guess betas from Google = good, getas from Apple = bad...

i love the new 4s. it has mirroring capability which is great for me since now i can project everything i load on my iphone without worrying about if the app has video out capabilities. Connecting it to my aaxa p4 takes seconds.
I may be wrong but the last time I read about it the 4S has the same processor but its' clocked slightly slower.

their server farm is massive for Siri. i have seen Siri running on iphone 3gs and 4 phones, so it's not a technical limitation. this is purely about getting people to buy the 4s.
