An anonymous reader writes "Some 10,000 people who stayed in tent cabins at Yosemite National Park this summer may be at risk for the deadly rodent-borne hantavirus according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control."

  Since Hanta can remain asymptomatic for six weeks or so, someone who got it in Yosemite could spread it to the mice at the Cheetos factory and not even know it!

  Hey, my dream "camping" trip is to set up an all solar powered rig from scratch with all the wiring and stuff and run a middle of the forest LAN party. Now THAT is camping! I mean come on, how cool is that? But now the hantavirus...oh well. Oh wait, we can add a panel and do ultrasonic anti-rodent speaker thingies lol.
  But seriously, ever since I was little, I've found creative ways to rig up custom electronics and circuits to get power where it shouldn't go while I'm camping. Some people catch and make food, I rig up and run inverters and batteries. It's like survival camping except WAY more realistic in the context of a global apocalypse. You know, like the show The Colony.

  Your image of the "Slashdot community" may be of barely-pubescent Morlocks living a troglodyte existence in the cellar of their parent, playing $MMORPG_of_the_week$ while eating cold pizza and drinking luke-warm flat cola. But that doesn't cover the whole range of "nerd". I do plenty of outdoor stuff ; I sometimes even get sunburned and frost nipped on the same day and consider it to have been a good day.

  In addition to it, my sensor software seems to be very poorly written. It pushes the core speed from 60bpm to up to 140bpm, draining all the energy of the system!

  Cyanohydrogen mod. Use with extreme caution, in most of the cases causes brickage. And no, I have no link to it.

  Upgrade to GirlFriend 2.0 - once you've done it, the brand new troubles will make you see your current problem in its true light - i.e. insignificant.

The types of hantavirus that cause HPS in the United States cannot be transmitted from one person to another. For example, you cannot get the virus from touching or kissing a person who has HPS or from a health care worker who has treated someone with the disease. You also cannot get the virus from a blood transfusion in which the blood came from a person who became ill with HPS and survived.
It seems like this is about as isolated of an incident as it can be. It's not contagious, and that's key.

  I live in a remote part of another country where Hanta is common. This bs story makes me wonder what they are really up to.
  You get hanta doing things in enclosed spaces where mice have been, but has not been aired out or had exposure to sun. For example, wood sheds when the weather turns cold is a common place, as both Humans and Mice are mixing together after the place being closed for months. Perhaps if you are digging under a tree, with your face in the dirt. Just walking in to a cabin, that is been used regularly, is not likly give you sufficient change at having been exposed.
  It is not something you get just having been near a place, and it is not human to human transmitiable.
  The number of people that died on the road, on their way to visit a park in the U.S. is way higher.

Mice and critters are only an issue if you eat your food inside the tent and leave crumbs everywhere. But there are always a few people who are messy.
