National "Take Your Computer To Work" Day
An anonymous reader writes "Today marks the inaugural 'Take Your Computer to Work Day'. First conceived by security researchers Michael Gough and Ian Robertson (the Thoughtful Hackers), this day has exploded in popularity and has now become a world-wide phenomenon. Says Mr. Robertson of its introduction, 'We always hear stories of how much productivity people gain by using their own mobile phones and tablets at work – by some studies, as much as 110%. We thought, wow, that is so smart and has absolutely no downsides. The next logical extension of that is to offer all our workers to bring in any of their computers, so we did.' 'The results were absolutely astonishing', said Mr. Gough. 'We were seeing user productivity up at least 0.5 times with Commodore 64's alone. Our database searches got faster with home-built white-box servers, and our janitorial staff was able to clean the restrooms twice as fast thanks to their TRS-80's.'"
It's the time of year when editors purposely drive readers away from their own site with drivel.

This is your worst April Fools joke ever. Not only isn't it funny, it has made Slashdot entirely unusable. In the past at least once you saw the joke there was a way to "turn it off" and get the normal site. I hope you enjoy all the reduced ad revenue and lost page views today. Was it worth it? This is almost enough to make me consider not returning.
Don't fret so much. It's down for everybody. Shortly they will be back to normal, or as normal as it ever is at slashdot.
Hey children! Time to behave!
and it's all gibberish. Stupid fucking april fools assholery
On the train home tonight I noted a high prevalence of laptops. Me, I just stuck with my cell phone. I refuse to take my computer into the office.
This is just stupid, effectively slashdot is down for me today.
I think the best part of the joke is seeing people like you whine "It's NOT FUNNY!!!111" ALL. DAY. LONG.
It's sort of like when Ubuntu showed up. It went a long way in separating the true Debianistas from the rest of the flotsam and jetsam. Hopefully, a lot of the whiners here will leave and never come back, and /. will experience a golden age of tech relevant news and discussions.
I can dream.

Other than not acceding to your implication that Debian is the One True Distro*, I'm with ya, good buddy. Good riddance to the riff-raff.
(*Don't worry, the OTD sure as hell ain't Ubuntu, either.)

Dunno about you, but for me, the word office is defined as that place where my computer happens to be located when I boot the 'work' image.

I didn't mean to imply that. I used Slackware for years and from time to time, still do. I've always been attracted to OpenBSD as well. Debian is pretty slick though (once you wrap your head around its oddities).
