Quarks Know Their Left From Their Right

sciencehabit writes "How an electron interacts with other matter depends on which way it's spinning as it zips along—to the right like a football thrown by a right-handed quarterback or the left like a pigskin thrown by a lefty. Now, physicists have confirmed that quarks—the particles that join in trios to form the protons and neutrons in atomic nuclei—exhibit the same asymmetry. The result could give physics a new weapon in the grand hunt for new particles and forces. Or they can search for subtle hints of exotic new things beyond their tried-and-true standard model by studying familiar particles in great detail. In the latter approach, the new experiment gives physicists a way to probe for certain kinds of new forces."

I'm not an active community member, I only made this account to post this, but you should probably listen to what your community members want, lest you lose the one's that you have left. Many, many corporations, groups, organizations etc. have put their ideas first over the input of their users and paid a price for it, so this beta thing should probably be dropped. That said, I really don't know how this site manages to keep going. I come here partly out of nostalgia from when I used to come here daily to read, and partly to look for news I might have missed on Ars or Reddit. I generally read comments, though I really don't post. Years ago as a posting member, I wrote something that offended some uber neckbeard among your readership, who then trolled me through every comment on every article I made. As I looked for moderation or someone to fix the troll, found none. I got no response and no help with my troll. So I quit /. and found other (read better) sources for my tech news and tech related news. I don't expect that the problem has been fixxed, hell you don't even have a report button to give the appearance of giving a shit, and come beta if it is indeed bad I will probably quit this site again until I feel nostalgic enough to return or until the site finally goes belly up as it should have long ago. There are other issues to be had as well. The accuracy and legitimacy of the articles posted should always be checked by the reader, something I would not expect since the articles themselves are picked by moderators from a pool of submissions. If your going to pick and choose what articles go up, make sure they are legitimate. I've also run into a couple editorials posing as articles, by a gentleman (read windbag asshole) by the name of Bennett. Is he someone's cousin, or friend, or butt buddy or something? Cause after skimming through one of his crappy editorials, and then the comments after him, no one seems to find much value to this guy, but he also seems to keep getting articles posted. Thats bad form for a discussion forum. In general I find /. to be rife with moderator apathy and abuses. None of this is taking into account the more dated structure and somewhat feature lacking nature of the site. Perhaps if beta improves the site functionality, like dropping the difficult to follow threaded conversation model or adding that report button (and doing something with it) it might be improvement. Neutrons and protons aren't fundamental particles. They're made up of more fundamental particles, quarks. There are six kinds of quarks, though only two of them (up and down) go into making up protons and neutrons. There are also three "kinds" of electrons (electron, muon, tau) and three kinds of neutrinos. Those, plus the bosons (photon, gluon, W and Z, Higgs) are all the fundamental particles.

These interact in three major ways: strong, weak, and electric forces. (Gravity is a whole separate headache.) Strong and electric forces are "symmetric"; there's no difference between left and right, or between forward and backward in time. Make a movie of them, and it appears to be following the laws of physics even if you run it backwards or upside-down.

But weak forces violate that. They have a predisposition to run one way rather than the other. That's been known for decades in certain rare processes. This article shows that it happens even between quarks and electrons. They knew it should be there, because they do have a weak interaction on each other, but the weak interaction is (duh) weaker than the other ones, so it's really hard to see. They did, however, manage it.

It's not predicting any new particles, but it points to an idea of why is more matter in the universe than antimatter, or why time goes "forward" rather than "backward". It's not a solution to those questions, but it's a data point in trying to find one.

Yes! And there always has been. Left-handed particles are not the same as right-handed ones. Quarks in particular come in a dizzying amount of varieties. There are 6 flavors times 3 colors times 2 spins times 2 for regular/anti. So in total there are actually 72 kinds of quark!

But people find it easier to talk about there being fewer kinds and specifying the exact types only as necessary. That makes sense, because particles of one type can change into particles of another type pretty easily. For example, you could have a quark in a superposition of left- and right-handed states. Quarks are constantly changing their color as they exchange gluons with other quarks inside the proton. Flavor and regular/anti change the least, so you generally hear people talk about a "strange quark" or a "top antiquark". But all those other properties are always around.

I think that what Slashdot needs to do is simple: First, stop the beta NOW. It's sunk cost with a VERY bad outcome. Stop throwing good money after bad. Next, set up a discussion forum where users can give feedback on what they think is necessary - not on what you think is necessary. Focus the beta on that. Note that this is not to say that the designers at Dice should have no say - they should put forth their arguments as to how they think the site should change to attract new users (which is supposedly what they want and ALSO what we want, given that the community also wants a vibrant user base to interact with). After that, start making an updated site that is optional for users to use and, then, only after the initial usability gotchas are taken care of, start transferring folks over. Finally, always leave the old way for a backup for at least two major upgrades - I know that's old school and very non-Web gazillion.0, but it does help laggards transition.

You can take suggestions and maybe reduce the implosion, but unless you understand *why* we're upset, you're going to be heading in fundamentally the wrong direction.

I totally agree! I've been coming 'here' regularly for years (10+) and this is only my second comment. I love and value Slashdot BECAUSE the given article summary of the day is really just a piece of meat to get the real soup going that Slashdotters gather to share, which are the regularly insightful as well as irreverent comments of other Slashdotters from all over the world! (It doesn't even have to be a particularly recent or good piece of meat of a summary article to provoke the passion, observations and analysis of Slashdotters!)

Any fool can google the summary article 100 ways from Sunday, And many do. Slashdot comments on the other hand are unique, interesting, helpful, from funny to absurd to trolls to deeply insightful. Slashdot is Slashdot (or has been) because of its members comments and the (usually!) intelligence and experience behind them that gets shared.

That's the real and dynamic product! The beta looks like Blahdot already - and there are thousands of those kinds of sites and blogs already out there - all eye candy, flash headlines (excuse me, stories) and only a very few with a regularly vibrant community of interesting, insightful and funny COMMENTERS and COMMENTATORS I want to keep reading. The new owners have it backwards and inside out.

Why don't the new owners start a new second and separate site, Blahdot (otherwise known as 'Beta'), and, quite separately, see how that goes - it does after all already look like and act like a very different and very common web animal from Slashdot - i.e. Blahdot wants an audience for blahdot's stories, whereas Slashdot is a community with a dynamic effervescent product (Community, community comments, and comment threads) interesting and attractive enough to be almost independent of whatever summary article the comments spark off (as in, for example, the present boycott of summary articles). How many other sites are interesting enough to visit and read once their (supposedly) lead-in content has gone or is ignored?

If the new owners want Slashdot to scale in some manner and become an even larger community, then why not ask the Slashdot community how their activity (community, comments and comment threads) can scale and remain as meaningful and attractive as it is? Rather than some eyeball-driven design-head pushing his/her site designs for big(ger) audiences around aggregations of stories the web is already clogged with (yawn). The Slashdot community is already full of interesting comment about what it is (community, community comments, and comment threads) and what that could be scaling up.

Blahdot isn't Slashdot. Articles and audiences are a radically different animal from Community and community comments. And you ca

I have to disagree. I''ve maintained my Slashdot notice since nearly the beginning (well over a decade at least) to catch links to insightful articles about issues of science, technology, and socio-political observations affecting science and technology.

The hateful trolling and petty squabbling in the comments are usually ignored. On rare occasions where there seems to be a significant percentage of actual thoughtful discussion of the original post, I'll skim past the trolls to catch the key points of any expansion or debate of the main topic. I was under the impression Reddit and usenet were the location of insufferably rude "communities." When Slashdot is nothing but bickering discussion threads, I'll be canceling my membership.
