Finding an ISIS Training Camp Using Google Earth
An anonymous reader writes: Terrorist organization ISIS has been in the news a lot lately for their hostile activities in Iraq and Syria. They've also been very active online, posting propaganda and photos on various social networking sites to try to recruit more members. Frequently, they'll have pictures of themselves in nondescript locations — but even carefully selected images give clues to a real location. Citizen journalists at Bellingcat analyzed a group of these photos, comparing buildings and bridges in the background to images from Google Earth. With very little to go on, they were able to pinpoint the location of a terrorist training camp.

That's Google. That is why it wasn't a brilliant move to let a corporation build its spy network when all sides to all conflicts have equal access to the top spy satellites unless you are pushing complete global anhilation..

Unless of course the military contracted things out to Google Drone (TM), in which case I stand corrected.
it won't be a stretch by any means to think that the US govt has access to far better imaging technology, that can pinpoint enemy bases in real time. with drones/satellites/gps guided missiles etc, so my question is, why the heck do these people still exist?

When they catch on and start Chroma Keying non-existant locations a huge tool will be lost.. but for now.. selfies are being mined like crazy.. Papparazzi use them too
Just like the Al Qaeda group they are financed by the U.S., their weapons are provided by the U.S. the U.S. had been training them and U.S. special forces have been in Syria showing them what to do. The British government through the MI5 group and GCHQ have been using informers and agent provocateurs to encourage them to travel to Syria to fight. Remember hook hand remember his sidekick well his sidekick has a government-sponsored website and he even has a YouTube channel recruiting Muslims. This group was a nonexisting group until funding by the U.S. government when these people are long dead and buried and have been used you will be left with absolutely no rights whatsoever. You will have to ask the authorities for permission to scratch your arse and have a supervisor to monitor any international phone calls you make. The U.S. know exactly where they are so does the U.K., when the U.S. says jump the English politicians say how high!
There are other 'terrorist organizations' with 'hostile activities in Iraq and Syria', some of them a tad less indigenous than ISIS.
They aren't in the news much.
How 'bout they all get the fuck out of there and let the locals decide how they want to run their country?

Seem the area has many groups - some friendly to one agenda, others friendly to other agendas. It doesn't seem hard to use areal photos to find *a* camp. But how might they know it's an ISIS camp? (especially considering that a facility may be Local Police one day, and ISIS the next.

Seriously, after that sawing off a live man's head, I have NO problem with blowing these assholes away. In fact, I would be happy to pull the trigger to launch.
Now, the real question is, did this interfere with an on-going operation? I would hate to think that showing them how easy it is to find out info from their propaganda would stop its flow.

ISIS is just a made-up conspiracy made up by loony tea baggers to discredit Obama's foreign policy. Because they're racists.
ISIS has been ISIL for at least a month now. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria changed to the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant. This is significant as they are trying to create a Muslim Caliphate over the governments of the entire region.
They've been just IS for some time now. And if I'm not mistaken, the last S in ISIS stands for Sham, which is Arabic for Levant. And they claim that the Caliphate has been established.
Democracy is for the people; you only vote once per season and we'll do the rest of the work for you don't have to.
1) So what? They will continue training in the same area. Heck those pix are from different time periods and it is the same thing: an ISIS training ground.
2) an Germany and France have basically funded AQ because they are paying 100 of millions for ransom. OTOH, if we capture and then imprison for life these dogs combined with massive helping other nations to stop them, it WILL stop.

I used this technique a few years ago to find a CIA detention centre in Afghanistan called "The Salt Pit". A satellite imaging company showed images but without coordinates (at government request). I had Google Earth and looked at the colors and images carefully. It took about 45 minutes, but I found it and posted the exact lon/lat to Wikipedia. They didn't turn me down.

Not really the same, at all. AQ is pretty much gone. ISIS started under bush, got nowhere and it was only because the GOP faught against O going into Syria that Isis gained any thing.
During Roman times, if a single Roman citizen was killed, 1000 people from the do'ers village would be killed be as retribution. And during Hitler's reign, he wiped out an entire Polish town off the face of the earth when one of his deputies was killed in an assasignation plot. That's how you deal with muslims and prevent further terrorist attacks. Israel understands this quite well today. Attack them with a few rockets, kill 50 Israeli citizens and they kill several thousand Palestinians and destroy their economy back to the stone age. Yet the damn Muslims are so filled with hate that they don't see that their own actions are hurting them.
