Australian Police Get McLaren and Aston Martin Supercars
An anonymous reader writes: Australia's New South Wales police department has added a pair of new cars to their fleet that are going to be very hard to outrun, a McLaren 650S and an Aston Martin Vanquish Volante. The vehicles aren't going to be used on the job, but as a promotional tool to help raise money for the families of fallen police. "These sponsorship arrangements are designed to promote community engagement with NSW Police. This agreement is designed to promote tomorrow's Police Legacy Wall to Wall ride and celebrate 100 years of Women in Policing," a police spokesperson said in a statement.
to raise more than the cost of the two cars?
You are all cows. Cows say moo. MOOOOO! MOOOOO! Moo cows MOOOO! Moo say the cows. YOU COPPER COWS!!
XKCD put up a toon about how "I could care less" is "correct". However, if fails on several levels. Communication is meant to convey information and if that information IS NOT to be filtered through the understanding of another, then if you "could[n't] care less", what was the point of saying anything?
Secondly, "I couldn't care less" is a shortening of "I couldn't care less if I tried". Which if you drop the "n't" off, becomes "I could care less if I tried". Which then indicates you don't care much and don't feel motivated to try to care less than you do. This is then entirely redundant, since if you cared to make a stand on it, you could and would try and find yourself able in theory to care even less about it.
Third, if your defence is one of "language changes by common usage" and that your interlocutor is somehow "wrong" because they are merely attempting superiority by demonstrating a deeper knowledge of language, then YOU are wrong by the same metric in "demonstrating" you know how language forms.
Fourthly, if your defence is one of "language changes by common usage", then this means that the attempt NOT to change the common usage, by correcting misuse of current understanding *is a completely acceptable method of driving the evolution of language*. Evolution DOES NOT DEMAND change. A language isn't failed until it changes. A kick back against the kick back is no more valid (and indeed less valid because language changes institute confusion in communication, the antithesis of language's purpose) than the kick back you complain of. Hence the fight to "defend" the misapplication of "I couldn't care less" by lazy people is by its own supporting reasoning faulty.
Yes, this IS off topic. I couldn't care less. Literally.
It doesn't make a lot of sense to hire engineers to design an expensive special purpose machine, and then not use it for the purpose it was specialized for.
But hey, it's Australian Politics!
Two supercars or several months' worth of frontline support for the families of fallen police officers?
Good to know where priorities lie, isn't it?

I'm sure these are the last of the V8 Interceptors the Australians will buy. They'll get used eventually for that purpose.
Why bother with these "supercars" when they can easily buy FAR CHEAPER cars that have very similar specifications in terms of acceleration and speed for far less money?
Heck it would cost less to mod some Porsches or Audis.
Actually what is the point of these vehicles anyhow? they will not perform any TPAC, they will not go off-road so these are pursuit vehicles. If it's only pursuit then why not get 10x badass R1 bikes?
A 'singular oddity' is an event that cannot be explained and only happens when you are alone.
The vehicles aren't going to be used on the job, but as a promotional tool to help raise money for the families of fallen police.
So I'm guessing that "outrunning" them is largely irrelevant.
The correct question should be: by any chance is one of the officers assigned to drive it called Max Rockatansky?
We need these because of... reasons.
but Australians don't get a super fast internet
My ism, it's full of beliefs.
I like to imagine the Australian police driving something a little more like this:

You are welcome on my lawn.
Still not better than the last of the V8 Interceptors.

"The vehicles aren't going to be used on the job, but as a promotional tool to help raise money for the families of fallen police."
Yeah. Why do charities or their managers always have to buy supercars?
I don't get it. I surely won't donate to any charity where the chairman doesn't drive a rusty 85 Chevy.
How are all these police dying in numbers that require this kind of money is spent to raise still more money? Are there lethal kangaroo attacks? Rabid sheep? Terrible drivers? I mean, Australia is frequently a poster child for gun control in the US, so what gives? I was told if there were no guns, that no one would die. So how are these guys snuffing it?

Finnish police have also been donated super cars in the past. I recall them getting a Jaguar some ten years or so ago, but they trashed it in under a year.
donated by car dealers, while US police departments are getting MRAPs and APCs courtesy of the US taxpayer, to be used for terrorizing the populace into submission, as well as the occasional no-knock raid on a suspected pot grower or whatever.
If US cops want something like a Porsche or Lamborghini for their DARE propaganda vehicle, they simply start an asset forfeiture against the local coke dealer....

This is where someone usually goes, "You must be new here." Very rarely do the comments stick to the narrowest interpretation of what the topic is.
I for one, do not appreciate reality from intruding upon my mental images and fantasy. You know, the one where you are chasing "the bad guy" across the Australian Outback, doing a cool 300 km/h in my McLaren, and it's all cool and legit because I'm a cop!
Vroom!

This is the Mad Max reboot we all needed.

Since when did you have to break the law to get your assets forfeited? Here in America you can have your Porsche stolen by the cops just because they don't like you, no actual crime or evidence needed. Good luck getting it back too.
If you watch TV or listen to Internet forums, you'll get wrong ideas about the numbers. Here's some actual facts.
1) Roughly twice as many white people as black are killed by police every year in the USA.
2) There are about six times as many white people as black, so this shows a serious disparity - if enforcement and crime were both equal, there should be six times as many whites being killed, not twice as many.
3) There are twice as many poor white people as black people. Again, this is a disparity - if poverty were equally distributed, there'd be six times as many poor whites, not twice as many.
It should be obvious, just from these three facts (and there's many more correlations) that law enforcement bears little relation to either color or crime. Rich people of every race can literally get away with murder while the poor are victimized regardless of color. There's a brutal, bloody war being waged on the poor, and it just so happens that a disproportionate percentage of people living in poverty are non-white. Racism exists, and this situation does allow racists to exercise their hate, but the problem isn't racism itself, the problem is the lack of availability of education and jobs for the poor.
This is what Dr. King was trying to tell people. Poverty is what's keeping black people down. Every cop knows that a black man's more likely to be poor than a white man.
