VR Devs Pull Support For Oculus Rift Until Palmer Luckey Steps Down (vice.com)
After it was revealed that Oculus founder Palmer Luckey backed a pro-Trump political organization called Nimble America that is dedicated to "shitposting" and spreading inflammatory memes about Hillary Clinton, several developers of the Oculus Rift virtual-reality headset have announced that they will stop supporting the headset until its founder steps down. One of the biggest developers for Oculus Rift, Insomniac Games, told Motherboard, "Insomniac Games condemns all forms of hate speech. While everyone has a right to express his or her political opinion, the behavior and sentiments reported do not reflect the values of our company. We are also confident that his behavior and sentiment does not reflect the values of the many Oculus employees we work with on a daily basis." Fez and Superhypercube developer Polytron also said in a statement, "In a political climate as fragile and horrifying as this one, we cannot tacitly endorse these actions by supporting Luckey or his platform." Motherboard reports: Motherboard has reached out to several other, more well-known VR developers who work with Oculus including Fantastic Contraption makers Northway Games and Job Simulator makers Owlchemy Labs. Northway Games couldn't be reached immediately for comment but tweeted the following: "What. The. Fuck. [accompanied with a link to the news via Kotaku]" and "Definitely using every fibre of my 'professionalism' to not tweet some tweets right now." Owlchemy Labs, which is currently developing for Job Simulator for the Oculus Touch controls, declined to comment either way. E McNeill, who has developed a couple of games for Oculus Rift and GearVR, suggested that like-minded VR developers raise money for Hillary Clinton's campaign to counter the money Luckey has raised for Trump. [E McNeill tweeted: "Idle Q: Would any Oculus devs join me in a donation drive for HIllary? We could aim to beat Nimble America's $11k. I'd start with $1k myself."] "This backlash is nonsense," said James Green, co-founder of VR developer Carbon Games. "I absolutely support him doing whatever he wants politically if it's legal. To take any other position is against American values."
a dick.
So basically these developers are intolerant of any type of political message other than their own.
and I'm buying a Vive
Not. Our gal vs your guy... ZOMG!
The tail is wagging the dog I see. You're all fired.
America has no values. . . this presidential race should be argument enough for that (on both sides of the aisle).
As long as you think EXACTLY the way they do.
Of course if he was "shitposting" Trump, that would be A-OK, right?
"While everyone has a right to express his or her political opinion", because the second part to that sentence always comes out being something like, "we don't think this person should be able to express theirs."
Also apparently Luckey's girlfriend has been harassed off of Twitter, and you'll get banned from NeoGaf if you suggest that maybe she shouldn't be harassed. Stay classy, internet.
Karma: Terrifying (mostly affected by atrocities you've committed)
And so, in the name of "tolerance", they consigned heterodox unbelievers to a blacklist.
Palmer Lucky is Brendon Eich 2.0.
Anyone else getting sick of the complete hypocrisy and intolerance of the Left? Anyone who believes or expresses an opinion different than their own is committing hate speech and deserves to be destroyed, but it is fine for the Left to use whatever vulgar, derogatory, and spiteful speech, mockery, or actions to force their own ideas and preferences upon everybody else.
She has never ever done anything wrong or highly illegal, so therefore it's terrible to say bad things about her.
Don't mix work and politics.
Can they not even see what parodies of themselves they've become?
TV tells them someone is hitler and they all try to out-tantrum one another.
It's not even about supporting Trump anymore, it's about being ashamed to stand with or anywhere near these people. They don't have any liberal values. They run on feigned indignation and trying to publicly shame others.
It's pathetic. Pull yourselves together, you numbnuts.
HTC Vive is better anyway. :-D
So a guy supports a political candidate. And this is what happens? What kind of world are we in where your political choices result in this kind of backlash?
This is going to make citizens united the least of our worries. A judge is going to look at this and go "oh, we have to let people contribute anonymously to protect free speech rights so they aren't retaliated against" and poof, there goes our transperency.
I can afford it, I'm not some dumb nigger in the city trying to pay with EBT cards, after all.
The more punked the left gets the more my stock in popcorn goes up.
Not a gamr myself so fuckem! Still
Filter error: You can type more than that for your comment.
Without hate speech, how could we rag on republicans?
What is astonishing to me is the level of rhetoric and the stretch of logic that has come into place since our Alien vs. Predator presidential race (i.e. whoever wins, we lose). Now we have a situation just like the Mozilla debacle with Brendan Eich except that it is much much flimsier an argument this time around.
But here's the thing, Insomniac and Polytron management: your job is to make money for the investors of your company, not to use them as some political tool because you disagree with the politics of one of the employees of Oculus. Period.
These decisions will only harm these companies financially because of diminished interest from people who own an Oculus. Unless the management has concrete data that their continued support of the Oculus will harm their sales due to the political connection (and I'll bet diamonds to dollars that they don't), then the boards of directors of all of these companies should direct the executive management of the companies that withdrew support for Oculus to reverse their decision or be terminated for breach of fiduciary duty.
Enough of this SJW bullshit, especially when investor money and returns are at stake and the backlash from these actions could be worse. E McNeill is totally correct - if you want to fight a Trump supporter, put your own money up rather than trying to suppress others as if you were some Soviet-era state enterprise licking the boots of the party you support.
...Mark Zuckerberg does. I'm glad to see they won't be supporting his left wing censorious media platform. :-P
Whiners support Hillary for Dictator, film at 11.
"This backlash is nonsense," said James Green, co-founder of VR developer Carbon Games. "I absolutely support him doing whatever he wants politically if it's legal. To take any other position is against American values."
I have little to no interest in VR, and negative interest in Oculus. But I now know of Carbon Games and have a respectful view of them.
Conversely, I also now know of Polytron and have a negative opinion of them. Insomniac was also a 2nd rate developer and now I have further reason to ignore them.
eu estou seriamente procurando uma razão pra esse lugar ser bombardeado por kamikazes.
Look, we all get to make free choices. If those choices piss off others who disagree, so be it. The ONLY thing that really matters - fundamentally - is the Constitution, which DOES say "Congress shall make no law..." but does NOT say "There shall be no social media reactions...". Easy-squeazy, baby!
I think I'd give you a mod point for that, if I ever got one. However, it's rather shallow for "insightful" and there is no "obvious" mod...
My related question would be: How many of the Slashdot trolls are working for Palmer Luckey?
It's hard to believe anyone could be so sincerely ignorant or profoundly stupid, but easy to believe such people can't earn any money except by pretending to be insane. It's like the 50-cent Party run by the Chinese communists to stifle dissent on the Internet, but I bet Palmer pays better. He probably includes incentive bonuses for replies to the the trollage.
It's been quite obvious for a long time that much of the hatred of Hillary is insane or worse. I don't like her, but I basically dislike all lawyers. Looking at the evidence, there's nothing to hate there. Heck, I don't even hate the big dick Cheney, and I believe he has LOTS of blood on his hands, far beyond the most insane accusations against Hillary.
Ought to be a song about the artificial scarcity of Slashdot mod points. It's not like the moderation has as much value as an extremely small hill of beans.
Freedom = (Meaningful - Coerced) Choice != (Speech | Beer^2), and sad sock puppets' bad mods avail them naught.
Really? These Twits are claiming that politically supporting someone who is opposed to someone engaged in arguably treasonous behavior (anyone named Clinton) is free speech? Me, I think the donald is nvtz, but Hillary has a serious credibility problem - she lies about "being unable to recall" soo many times (Whitewater through Benghazi) and _intentionally_ (via violation of mandated security protocols) weakens national security because she believes she is above the law. Really? Sigh.
TREASON!
I don't have an Oculus but I do have a Gear VR. The chain back to Luckey is a little more complicated but it's still Oculus. I've cancelled all services and got refunds where I was able. Our whole house is trading in our Galaxy's for different phones only because Samsung supports the platform which is too bad. But none of us hesitated and it wasn't a hard choice. We believe in freedom of speech too but as everyone knows that has limits - there's the famous example that you still can't yell "fire" in a theater. That's what this is. I've voted against Republicans running for president and against two Democrats. I would not have taken this action against any of those I voted against before. Trump is different. A child with an internet connection that doesn't already have their mind made up can spend less than five minutes online and find verifiable evidence of the enormous number of outright lies this man has told. Of the hundreds of positions on serious issues that he's changed his mind on that same day. The number of times he's actually been found guilty of things in legal courts and paid penalties and fines and how many times he's had to settle. The childish names he calls people, the tweets where he insults peoples looks. All of these things and more can be PROVEN with video, audio, transcripts and legal documents. No other person that's ever run for president has had so many disqualifying things that could be easily proven. More Republican judges, generals, cabinet members, law enforcement leaders, senators and congressmen have publicly come out against their own party's nominee in our history. This is justified at every level.
This is exactly the kind of crap that will make me vote for Trump. These people are fucking idiots and I don't want to be associated with them.
If you can't understand the difference between discriminating against someone because they're black or a woman (i.e something they have no control over) vs disagreeing with a political message, I honestly don't know what to tell you.
Your best best might be to head back to high school, or read a history book. I'd say "just stop being an asshole" but you'd say I was racist against assholes and I'd just end up talking to the brick wall again.
...VR salt mining simulator.
These butt-hurt snowflakes don't seem to realize that they're feeding the trolls in the most direct way imaginable.
Their tears are fucking delicious.
"Shitposting" is fraud rather than speech for a few reasons.
It is knowingly false. For example, "shitposters" distribute a purported photo of Hillary Clinton in blackface with Bill, which doesn't match her eye color or her and Bill's appearance at the time. But they keep distributing it.
They then spoof the comment system by having robots upmod posts and downmod their detractors, thus fraudulently promoting their comments as highly regarded.
They mis-state the first amendment of the constitution by telling people that reactions to their abuse are hypocritical and against the first amendment, when the first amendment does not protect anyone from the consequences of their speech, nor does it promise anyone the podium of their choice.
Taking action to show your disapproval of such action is laudable.
Bruce Perens.
You're boycotting people for boycotting people?
/., Home of neckbeards virulently defending the right to shitpost and spam under free speech, but not the right of others to disagree with aforementioned free speech. Self-contradiction number two, the first amendment only protects against government intrusion. Self-contradiction number three, it also protects the freedom of association, so if you wanted to apply it to private companies and individuals, these devs are completely free to blast Luckey and refuse to associate with Oculus, under *the exact same values* you're using to defend his right to shitpost and spam.
Pretty much every comment here on Trumps side has used racist slurs, homophobe insults, insults denigrating women - essentially all the things people hate about Trump and his supporters and they're so staggeringly stupid they come on here and prove what everyone thinks about them is true. Do you even comprehend how immature and uneducated you sound? Oh well, it doesn't much matter. In just 45 days none of us will ever have to listen to you or Trump again.
That the Dailybeast made all this up right?
It's Trump's emphasis on "defeat them quickly" that led me to the same conclusion. I don't think a few nuclear bombs will do that much damage, though they would still be war crimes. The real risk is that Trump bungles his "limited" nuclear attack and somehow sucks Pakistan or Israel into the mess... Given the Donald's record of bungling everything he touches, I wouldn't bet on a good outcome. There are some Trump supporters who would gladly welcome a permanent state of war with 1.6 billion Muslims.
On the Hillary thing, I don't even like her, but I don't see how to get to "dystopia" if she wins. Seems most likely that she'll pretty much stay the course, and we certainly haven't gotten to dystopia yet. I'd prefer her to change the course in a more positive direction, but I don't expect her to do it unless we give her a progressive Congress and they put the pressure on her. There used to be a time when that could have included some progressive Republicans, but they've been exterminated from today's so-called Republican Party.
On my Subject: question, I really have no idea. Too many years since I got one.
Freedom = (Meaningful - Coerced) Choice != (Speech | Beer^2), and sad sock puppets' bad mods avail them naught.
The last thing that murderer Hillary needs is our money, she has already been bought and paid for many times over by fucks. I despise both her and Trump alike. I don't want either candidate to win.
"This backlash is nonsense," said James Green, co-founder of VR developer Carbon Games. "I absolutely support him doing whatever he wants politically if it's legal. To take any other position is against American values."
I think you meant to say you absolutely support other people doing what they want politically if it's legal, such as disagreeing with Luckey, or boycotting his product, or raising money for Clinton in response. Because taking any other position would be against American values _and_ hypocritical, right?
And yes, he's perfectly within his rights to say what he said, and i'm within my rights to point out the contradiction, and other people are within their rights to respond to me with disagreements, and etc. Saying that one person gets to have their say and everyone else needs to shut up about it after that is not how political discourse works.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank
However, there is the implication here that these "outraged" folk are somehow ok with the "makes a sociopath look good" option that is Clinton.
He shot himself in the foot and sabotaged his business dealings because of a misguided zeal which is contrary to the interests of everyone with productive activity.
That is the problem.
Thank god that mulatto got all those white cucks to wake from their stupor and stop worshiping the blacks of the negro football league.
It's OK to refuse to tolerate intolerance. Indeed, it's something you need to do.
Bruce Perens.
What you are telling me is that they didn't tolerate intolerance. Good for them.
Bruce Perens.
In other news, the internet image board, 4chan, has announced that it's planned takeover of the United States is now complete. An anonymous spokesbear for the group commented, "We're happy to see that our hilarious methods of juvenile discourse have finally taken root in mainstream American culture. While political speech in the US has been vapid and completely void of meaningful content for decades, we couldn't rest until it was also vindictive and insulting. Once the elections are over, and it *really* doesn't matter who wins, we can look forward to a stabilizing period of denial of service while the victor scoops up as much wealth as possible and deposits it in their goody bag. I just want to thank the American people, once again, for choosing us as their moral role models."
and suddenly the quality of games/apps for oculus rift increases exponentially.
The CEO of a construction company I worked for is a very right wing anti Clinton person. That company has built a number of roads and infrastructure around the country among other projects.
You gonna protest and blacklist every goddamn thing built by someone you disagree with? You might as well stay home.
(except the company that built your home might be run by a fascist too. Who hired illegal immigrants to build it.)
At some point, you have to stop this mass organizing against people who hold opinions contrary to yours. They are not up for election.
What happened to the taboo on discussing politics at workplace?
So, do you always support harassing women, or only when it's someone whose politics you dislike? I'm trying to keep track of what your beliefs are today, because I don't know you any more, starting from around the time you abandoned any open source principles.
I won't even bother asking if you're consistent about hating all the political lies. For the record, I don't support any of the criminals running for office, I know that half of the scandals are fake, the media is just making stuff up, and that the scandals that actually have some substance will always get compared to the utter nonsense stuff.
Feel free to pick your favorite liar and argue that it's not free speech, it's fraud. There's plenty to go around:

So these developers are boycotting the Rift because its founder supports Trump... I donno how to tell these assclowns this but...IBM and a few others sold their products to Germany during WW2, and in a way you could say they supported Hitler, and since all "PC compatibles" are derived from IBM's PC, they should stop using any from of PC. They should also boycott all Coca-cola products, stop watching films hat are produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, if they have any Chase back accounts they should be closed, They can't drive a Ford or GM or drive any modern car due to these two.
These asshats just got added to my shit list for being closed minded rtards.
There's no surprise on either side here.
Palmer has freedom of speech and freedom of choice to do what he wants. While some may or may not view his methods or message as unpleasant, he's broken no laws.
The protesting devs have the right to protest as they will legally, just as folks will or will not buy from either Oculus or the opposing devs based on their politics and statements. (circle of life and all of that)
To borrow from Devo, everyone involved has the freedom of choice to do as they will within the confines of the law -- it's not Freedom FROM their choices, so the fallout towards all sides saying or doing things that others disagree is a non-issue and unsurprising.
James Green, co-founder of VR developer Carbon Games. "I absolutely support him doing whatever he wants politically if it's legal. To take any other position is against American values."
Nobody has suggested Mr. Luckey be prevented from expressing his political opinion. But expression comes with the possibility of reply, in both passive lack of support and active rebuttal.
I like Hillary so you can't like Trump, my way or no way. I'm a big crybaby. Clinton supporters are just dumb as fuck. Brain washed really.
Watching you all fight over which corrupt goon we should hire, has been both the most entertaining, and the most dismal thing I have EVER experienced in this life.
And you're just asking for retaliation for Hillary's shitposting and inflammatory memes. I don't want to see commerce imploding because no one will work or buy from anyone else. If you're going to try to screw each other over, can't you at least keep it to politics?
Slashdot: Playing Favorites Since 1997
You know Bruce, I used to consider you a decent person. Then I saw that you change to support whatever is popular, principles be damned. I don't believe you actually believe anything you claim to any more. I honestly think you just want to be smug and feel that you're a better person than everyone else.
Farewell, I never new ye.
What I don't understand half people voting in this country are voting for Trump regardless of what you or I think. What gives with companies making political stands like this? How is this professional behavior? How does this help Insomniac win customers and grow their business?
Seems like an exceedingly childish and stupid way to lose customers in an extremely constrained market to begin with.
Insomniac Games condemns all forms of hate speech. While everyone has a right to express his or her political opinion, the behavior and sentiments reported do not reflect the values of our company
This statement is an oxymoron.
a political climate as fragile and horrifying as this one, we cannot tacitly endorse these actions by supporting Luckey or his platform.
"horrifying" and "fragile" ... Good riddance douches. Your games are shit anyway.
Hey, Mr. Luckey, you asshat - you're not so lucky, are you. This is probably the beginning of a Looong, slooow slide to obscurity. Good Riddance, asshat!
This is free speech working the way it should work.
I refer you to the XKCD panels about the First Amendment.

"I believe in Karma. That means I can do bad things to people all day long and I assume they deserve it." : Dogbert
The developers don't like what someone does with his own money? Screw them. I don't like what they do with THEIR money.
I would sooner blacklist the lot of them.
You should try a Christian moralizer, a Wall Street banker, a libertarian, a factory worker, a veteran, a police officer, and a rural farmer.
Reagan's big tent gets full of barking pretty quick.
James Green, co-founder of VR developer Carbon Games: "I absolutely support him doing whatever he wants politically if it's legal. To take any other position is against American values."
"This backlash is nonsense"
If you support the neo-nazi enabler Luckey from doing what he wants politically if it's legal, and suggesting anything else would be un-American... you are BY YOUR OWN DEFINITION being un-American for complaining some other people doing are doing what they want political. I really wonder how hypocrites brains work sometimes.... then i remember i don't actually give mush of a shit about someone who's so cluelessly fucked in the head.

> So basically these developers are intolerant of any type of political message other than their own.
> James Green, co-founder of VR developer Carbon Games. "I absolutely support him doing whatever he wants politically if it's legal. To take any other position is against American values."
It's legal to promote bigotry. It's even legal to call for lynching a certain race of people. American values is to let people say what they think no matter how vile and repulsive that is but that doesn't mean there will not be consequences for what you say or what vile cause you support.
It's "American values" to let the KKK hold rallies, but say you support KKK rallies on your next job application and watch what happens.
So if you disagree with Trump then boycott Oculus, boycott Luckey, boycott James Green and boycott Carbon Games. It's that simple.
Luckey says he's a fan of shitposting. He can dish it out, but he can't take it. Karma is a bitch.
No, those people would all respect each others opinions.
I agree its everybody right to speak their mind, but they have to prepare for the consequences of their actions. what goes up, must come down i think is about darm time enough people get up and surface these actions. it's these brave actions by the few, that show leadership and value for your fellow man.. Trump, while perceived as a niceguy to some, may serve to evoke crap from others.. Either way he is a politician, ya cant win them all.. but I will say this, I think with the amount of Hateful fecal matter that has fallen from his dirty and stained lips, its amazing that reports of these things have not surfaced earlier, or even perhaps worse. I agree Hillary is not perfect, but..... lets face it she is not Trump.. Which could be good or bad, depending on your perception.. I cannot or rather will not conjecture on the options, and it may seem to bias and thus tarnish the integrity of the article I am trying to convey. That said, thank you all for your time, patience, and attention with regard to this "blurb" of info..
We find out he pays to shitpost forums and this thread is loaded with shitposts!!!! WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW WHOD'A THUNK IT!?!
Looks like Carbon Games is the only one who wants my money.
I wonder what the people supporting this will say when the Trump-et crowd hounds someone out of their job for donating to the "racist, segregationist, pro-violence-on-cops Black Lives Matter hate group"?
You don't think that's a fair description of BLM? Try explaining your reasons to the baying mob.
No, these attacks on Luckey, Brendan Eich and so forth aren't censorship, exactly, but they are certainly intimidation, and an attempt to move certain political positions outside the realm of legitimate discussion. That's not something I welcome, and nor will the people doing it when they discover their opponents can do it to them as well.
People still don't get it.
I wonder when America is going to lose its freedom like Europe.
Pulling support for Oculus Rift is also political and legal. If James Green doesn't support this just as well, then by his own logic, he is taking a position against American values.
A game developer boycotting a platform, and hence forego millions in profits, is a good illustration of the idea that money and the actions it pays for amounts to political speech.
As for the choice these game developers are making, I think they are a bit naive. Hillary Clinton and her wealthy supporters, PACs, and affiliated groups, have a large number of highly skilled political message consultants and PR experts working for her, trying to manipulate public opinion in her favor, including through massive use of social media. The only thing that is remarkable about someone sinking millions into an organization whose job is to create "shitposts" about Hillary on social media is what an inept attempt at PR it actually is.
As usual, we have Hillary Clinton's well-oiled political machinery versus Donald Trump's incompetent attempt at running a political campaign. The really remarkable thing is that Hillary Clinton is such a lousy candidate and her political program is so bad that she still is struggling to put together a decisive win. Just imagine how poorly she would be doing if she actually ran against a serious candidate.
Please vote Trump or perhaps 3rd party or nothing. I say that as a western European that fits all the caricatures you may have.
I can't make sense of how we're supposed to consider Trump has no decency or moral ground, when the alternative belongs to a Nuremberg trial more than anything.
Hillary is already in power basically and she ran the war making department for a few years. She allied the US with Al Qaida so as to wage war in Libya and then Syria, and by extension the US's vassal States are allied to Al Qaida as well. Weren't those the big bad a decade ago? (after the "Axis of Evil", maybe). Vassal states (like France) are mired in the war lies and descending to slow-motion dictatorship, under the background of terrorist attacks (glorified school shootings) for which I hold Hillary Clinton ultimately responsible. She's been supporting Jihad - even though Saudi Arabia pays for most of it and a number of other countries have their hands in that dickery, the US political and military support for Jihad has been huge enough to hold this superpower accountable for something. She was leading the US Empire, and seeks to take the first seat to lead it again.
Trump talks trash with dangerous racist, misogynistic etc. comments. Clinton has shown by her acts that she is not above supporting rape, pillaging and genocide.
I've heard some days ago that we're living through the biggest and worst refugee outbreak since WW2. All these murdered countries will live in civil war or whatever you can call it for at least a decade and a change in US presidency will most likely be a false hope. But please, don't vote for the person with a large firsthand responsibility in these horrors.
Never heard of them.
You pansy ass. I'll bet the developers are fresh out of college.
Anyone that knows anything about 4chan /pol/ etc. knows that they (Nimble America) are just taking credit for what the /pol/ "community" spawned.
The entire kek/pepe meme magic stuff is all user generated. Even /pol/ itself is divided on whether or not it is a good thing that they are taking credit.
No one seems to be discussing how maybe its a good thing that the more extreme fringes of that community is distracted worshiping a memetic ancient egyptian ogdoad diety, chasing dubs trips and quads, instead of bothering real people with race issues.
Serves him right. Luckey probably was never good with women. And when you look like an ugly woman, you might hate other women too after all the rejection.
Please stop posting articles unrelated to news for nerds . Besides which, just because a group of people does something, doesn't make it right. Too much of today's politics seem driven by mob mentality and confirmation bias rather than more objective reasoning.
good mod point..
whom ever you are this type of hate is unacceptable..
your verbage is hateful
your usage is hostile..
we could get a law written that forbids negative advertising towards the other candidate.
I'm kinda tired of seeing all the " Look how bad X is for this position because of Y " ads that dominate the airways this time of year.
I would much rather see " I believe I'm the better choice for the position because of the following accomplishments or strengths I posses " instead.
Considering neither candidate has much to brag about, the number of ads would be quite limited in number.
A win-win all the way around.
Never been more disappointed to be a leftist. Throwing temper tantrums because someone disagrees with me. Holy hell.
Just convinced me to finally buy the OC Rift. Sorry to hear I won't be able to spend my money on your titles. Not missing much from what I see.
your intelerance of his intolerance of Hillary's intolerance, right?
No matter how much you cretins try to camouflage it, your fake "tolerance" and opposition to "hate" really just amounts to only tolerating what you like and labelling anything you disagree with as "hate" (which you, of course HATE)
Dealing with you people is like dealing with 4 year olds.... a bunch of little snowflakes who have never lived enough in the real world to know that words do not actually cause pain and that sometimes we can learn, and get other perspectives PRECISELY by listening to people who say things with which you disagree.
Ever since the start of the "progressive" political movement at the start of the 20th century, there have been several core elements which are not advertized, but are require pillars of the ideology. The ideology sounds like "progress" but has as much in common with progress as an arsonist has with a librarian. Dig deepy enough and you will find the elements below, and understand why "progressive" lead to gas chambers, genocide, and the term disappeared from the American lexicon from 1941 to when Hillary publicly dusted it off again in 2008.
There are no fixed, objective standards. "Progress" towards the never-to-be-defined destination requires flexibility. This is all about continually moving the Overton Window. Sometimes progressives admit to this one as they pretend thay are moving society into the future, but usually they pretend thay are not doing it and they denounce people who reject the leftward move as having moved right, even when no such rightward move has happened.
The ends justify the means. This is a natural partner to "no fixed standards". Truthfulness is a standard. Sadly, this is a biggie which leads right into re-education camps for those who disagree and extermination for undesireables. This is not the usual form of ends justifying a means, as with a nation in a war for its very survival where some leaders wrestle with the moral issues of a bombing target and must do one thing they think is morally bad to avoid a greater moral ill. The progressive form is in EVERYTHING, even when the issue is not very important, and even if the means are being applied against somthing that is not evil and not a non-political-policy threat.
People are interchangeable. People can be treated as large groups and individuals must conform to the norms of those groups. A person may be black but must "act black". A person may be gay but must "act gay". A person may be a woman but must "act like a woman". In this context "act" is not in the form of superficial displays, but rather conforming to political/cultural norms for the defined groups. If individuals do not conform to the norms of their groups then they frustrate the scheme that depends on treating people by group, and they must therefore be declared to not be "real" members of those groups.
Alternate views will not be tolerated. Progressives are always so certain they are obviously correct and have the best agenda that they will attempt to stomp out alternate views and since those alternate views are not progressive, stomping them out is seen as a good thing. The evil suspension of speech, oppression of objectors, etc is covered in propaganda which attempts to slime the non-progressives as unworthy of consideration and thereby properly suppressed.
This stuff is all contrary to the basic ideas of the founding of the United States. Many Americans embraced early 20th century progressivism when first advanced by "good" guys like Teddy Roosevelt and when wrapped in the cloak of kicking-off a new century of progress powered by SCIENCE. By the 1930s American progressives were talking-up eugenics, injecting huge government into everything, and the general population could see it in full force across the Atlantic. By January 1942 the support for progressivism evaporated in the United States and you were unlikely to hear anybody pushing it to the general public until Hillary and Obama were fighting for the nomination in 2008.
Sadly for you, Hillary spent piles of cash pushing back against users on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, etc who were probably unaware they were being trolled by her paid shills. She ran quite the troll outfit against Bernie.
Actually, the modern era of well-funded underhanded internet tolling BEGAN with Clinton 1.0 in the 1990s when BillClinton could not keep his hands off the intern, or the secretary, or the campaign worker, etc. Various Democrat supporters ponied-up lots of cash and started a whole bunch of left-leaning internet-centric operations to trash Clinton opponents, distract the public from the scandals, etc. This is where MoveOn.org (as-in "move on, already! Bill's babes were ASKING for it! the economy is good! The Federal prosecuters are a bunch of sex-starved prudes!, the women accusing Bill are the sort you get when you drag a $20 bill through a trailer park!...") originated. It's also where the most-famous opportunistic phoneys in American politics got their start. Both David Brock and Arianna Huffington pretended to be conservatives for several years to learn about their enemies then they took off their masks and launched huge anti-GOP online empires. That was the beginning of the new era of hyper-spin in politics. In the era of Nixon, the president tried (and failed) to "spin" by going before cameras and saying "I am not a crook". In the era of the Clintons, the president was saying (and getting away with) "it depends on the meaning of the word 'is'" and even the most-basic facts in ANY argument became negotiable/debateable.
As a cherry on top of this super-sized hypocrisy sundae, a huge number of the left's online trolling outlets are funded at least partially by George Soros, AFAIK the only man on the planet who has bragged that his time as a NAZI collaborator (yup, an actual servant of THE Adolph Hitler) was the happiest time of his lfe and he is prod of what he did (he's working hard to finish Hitler's dream of eliminate the sovereignty of the US and the UK and submerging the west into a global tyranny).
When's the last time an army of Trump supporters demanded that a person lose his job for contributing money to "correct the record" or "media matters"?
"Tolerance - sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one's own" - Webster's Dictionary
Who are the REAL tolerant people in American politics? hmmmmmmm?
And people with money need to get you to beleive what they want, so they can keep what they have and steal, err earn even more.
People still don't seem to understand.
If you are a government official, the head or on the board of a company (large or small), a clerk at the candy store, a gardener, a taxi driver, a ....
Fuck if. If you are a person with ANYTHING TO LOSE, you are NOT ALLOWED to have a personal, political or contrary opinion to ANYONE else.
Deal with it.
Huffy, whinger-babies want to censor free speech by labelling it hate speech. Oculus can do just fine without them. If they don't write Oculus games, don't buy anything from them.
A taste of their own medicine might be awful enough that they reconsider dollar-censoring free speech.
The most unholy thing about the US is that companies are too political. Do what you want as a citizen, with your own money (providing it's legal), but keep companies to their reason d'etre, not a political battering ram or bully machine.
