Thanks To the Princess, Han Wasn't Always Solo (cnn.com)

It is interesting to note how long it took this to emerge, as by today's standards, it doesn't rise to nearly the same level of scuttlebutt. Almost 40 years later, Carrie Fisher told People magazine that she and Harrison Ford had an affair on the set of the 1977 film 'Star Wars.' "It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend," she said. "After stumbling on often angst-ridden journals she kept while filming on location in London, she felt the time had come to open up about the formative experience," reports People magazine. "'It's been 40 years,' explains Fisher, who went on to write The Princess Diarist, excerpted exclusively in this week's issue."

      If you wrote a book to sell, obviously you're trying to sell it. But your statement is bordering on slut-shaming or implications of opportunistic machinations. How about, oh, just buying or not buying the book because you wanted to in the first place instead of being drawn into the hype or drama one way or the other? I mean, seriously, I'm not interested in 99.9999999% of biographies because most people don't have interesting lives (or at least, not particularly more than anyone else's, including my own).

      I don't care if she wanted to drink the jizz of 1000 men (stormtroopers?) on the set of Star Wars. It's irrelevant and none of my business even if she publishes the diaries. There is no moral judgement to be made because it's irrelevant. Marriages are at-will constructs, particularly today. If Harrison Ford wasn't getting any at home and he wanted to fuck a 19 year old, his business, again. Neither one is a minor or mentally defective. I, and society in general, have no vital interest in restricting his dick for the benefit of his then-current wife.

      But interpreting this as anything but a moneymaking ploy is impossible.

I said, I really don't care how many people you sleep with (as long as it is consensual). But once you are married and especially once you have kids, you are not supposed to be having sex with others. It cuts both ways. And as I said, I would give her a pass because she was young and the older guy with the star power is obviously the one initiating this and has the most control. But when a 60+ year old is now using it to profit... yeah, I'll tell her that she is disgusting. If the offends you, go back to your safe space.

      There are a great number of people who think Hollywood stars have opinions that must be correct and whose lives are good examples to follow. When these stars spout dangerous nonsense or cheat on their spouses, it harms society as a whole because people will follow their examples.

      Everybody has a responsibility to behave well, and that responsibility is more significant for those in the public eye.

      Silence is classy, it's also probably smart socially and legally. Fisher was quite young when she filmed the original Star Wars, I think around 17 or 18 years old. Ford would have been around his mid-30s. I always thought the age gap of their characters made their early encounters a touch unsavory (20 vs about 35). The idea of the two of them having a fling strikes me as less sexy and more predatory, if it is true. If Ford confirmed the rumour then that would probably put him in a bad light for having sex with a borderline legal teenager.

      I personally wouldn't have published, but I like keeping my private life private. Other opinions may differ, but it's definitely less classy than silence. Moreover, if I thought the fling/relationship was meaningful, it would cheapen it for me to publicize it. I'd rather take the memory to the grave.

      I'll grant your point. That said, is that a compelling enough interest to justify persecuting people? Since I got to grow up in an environment where such persecution was commonplace, i'm going to answer "no". I'd rather have my daughter be a slut than create an authoritarian veneer of morality.       I don't agree he'd have legal issues - age of consent in all US states is 18 or below and I haven't heard anything different from Great Britain where this event most likely happened. (16 is the age of consent there since 1885 - just checked)

      She was 19 when the movie was made.

      In terms of being unsavory, I dunno. Older men have been banging younger women since time immemorial. We are all used to it. Sure, if you are a young guy and all the hot chicks are getting vacuumed up by late 20s-early 30s guys, it isn't much fun. I remember that quite clearly. But it evens out eventually and you end up as the 47 year old with a 32 year old wife.

      That's precisely it, though. Society does take it as a point of vital interest and that's why it's a moneymaking ploy. Hell, the slut-shaming--the salacious nature of what might be revealed--is precisely the hook. If we didn't care, then it'd be C. Nobody and H. Noface and you'd see it beside the other $1 books at the store. It wouldn't make headlines. We wouldn't even have a discussion about whether or not it's a moneymaking ploy. So, until society does treat it as no vital interest, we should keep pointing out that it's irrelevant and not a basis to buy or not buy the book.

      Then you're either very old or very bad at math.

      It very much depends on where you live. If you retired to somewhere fairly cheap, like Malaysia or Poland, you could last a good 40+ years on that $2 million, if you were frugal and barring major catastrophes. The reason it isn't done that often is that it's actually quite hard to collect $2 million without owning property and having family/friends, both of which tend to tie you to the place where you earned all that money.

    I loved all these great films. Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Indiana Jones, etc. But I guess I'm the only person who really doesn't give a shit about the actors and actresses who played the characters. Who cares? They were just pretending to be them. The cocky bastard Han Solo was who I liked, not Harrison Ford the actor, who from what I understand is an easily-led airhead. Princess Leia had it going as the arrogant space princess who was nonetheless a brave resistance leader, but Carrie Fisher? She had a great role in The Blues Brothers but that was it.

    My theory is "fandom". There's just not enough crap out there to be a fan of. I mean, there are only three Indiana Jones movies to watch in the whole canon, (not counting the Young Indiana Jones which are actually pretty damn good but don't have much to do with the original movies) but if you want to talk about Harrison Ford then there is so much more. I think this constant culture of "fandom" just requires more material, more cutting room floor footage that was left there for a reason, more retrospective books about the filming of the movie, what stormtrooper TK-421 was eating that day at the commissary when he spoke his lines, on and on and on. Because, let's be honest, how many times can you watch the movies? After a while they just get stale and you might as well shout the lines with them ala the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The fans want more, more, more. Look at the Phantom Menace to see how well that worked out.

    I remember a story by someone who was just super excited that they got to have lunch with the guy who wore the Boba Fett mask. Like, big deal? He's just an actor, it could have been anyone.

    I wouldn't exactly say it's "trashy, salacious gossip about actresses" when the actress herself is saying it. One might actually even question the slightly sexist assumption in the way you phrased that -- given that Ford apparently hasn't said anything yet to confirm or deny this, isn't this closer to "trashy, salacious gossip about an ACTOR"?!

    Regardless -- whatever the exact level of "gossip" this falls under, it's still basically celebrity news and therefore I completely agree this has no business on Slashdot. I used to make jokes here about how we tend not to pay have stories about stuff most people seem to care most about -- and my classic examples were sports and celebrity gossip.

    Guess I was wrong.

      Actually, it's the temporary nature of the shooting schedule that facilitates a lot of affairs. Once the job is over, everyone has an excuse to go their separate ways. Hooking up afterwards can stretch out into a long term relationship.
