FBI Tracked 'Fake News' Believed To Be From Russia On Election Day (cnn.com)

An anonymous reader quotes a report from CNN: The FBI monitored social media on Election Day last year in an effort to track a suspected Russian disinformation campaign utilizing "fake news," CNN has learned. In the months leading up to Election Day, Twitter and Facebook were the feeding grounds for viral "news" stories floating conspiracies and hoaxes, many aimed at spreading negative false claims about Hillary Clinton. On Election Day, dozens of agents and analysts huddled at a command center arrayed with large monitoring screens at the FBI headquarters in Washington watching for security threats, according to multiple sources. That included analysts monitoring cyber threats, after months of mounting Russian intrusions targeting every part of the US political system, from political parties to policy think-tanks to state election systems. On this day, there was also a group of FBI cyber and counterintelligence analysts and investigators watching social media. FBI analysts had identified social media user accounts behind stories, some based overseas, and the suspicion was that at least some were part of a Russian disinformation campaign, according to two sources familiar with the investigation.

Do they REALLY expect us to be Russia having some Internet trolls makes them more powerful than a dozen billion dollar news outlets and the DNC when it comes to affecting our election process? The reason the Electoral College was set up was because they couldn't come up with an agreement over how to elect the executive, so they parceled it out to the states in a haphazard and mistaken fashion that was procedurally broken. Seriously, check out the election of 1800 and 1804, and the 12th Amendment.

It's still bad, but it was originally worse. And really, if you check it out, it didn't even have universal popular vote until after the Civil War, and technically that is an option, not a mandate.

It's a broken, arbitrary system that is cobbled together into a semblance of performance, nothing more.

It made smaller less populate states equal voice.

What they do need to get rid of is the winner take all electoral votes to the winner.

I hope you're not suggesting using the gerrymandered legislative districts idea that has been put forth and is used in two states.

      That would be bad.

Because in states like California New York, etc who have winner tske all it does make votets of the other party nor vote because they now in the end their vote won't count.

Why do you single out California and New York? That just discredits you. Because in ALL states, except Nebraska and Maine in the very limited narrow selection of Electoral College votes, when it comes to elections, Winner-Takes-All makes it so people's votes don't count, unless you count the jungle primary of California, or the requirement in states like Louisiana or Georgia for a run-off in non-Presidential contests.

I could possibly believe you were genuinely concerned about the flaws in the electoral system of the United States, but your reliance on false premises and singling out two particular states, is a hindrance to my believing that about you.

But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, enough to suggest you consider a more conscientious reform.

Just referring to the electoral college discredits you, as its proportionality is flawed. So is the GOP's allocation scheme.

Trump won the nomination fair and square AND the GOP grudgingly followed through.

Winning in a broken and corrupt system is like a rain-out victory, not something to relish.

They followed their own rules AND followed the will of the people. That's neither corrupt nor unrepresentative. I understand you don't like the results but the rules and laws were followed.

Corrupt and unrepresentative rules and laws, yes. I understand you had to lie about the results (don't think I forgot your false claim about a majority of the votes for Trump), but you can't change that the system of election is broken by lying about it either.

No - I noticed. You reject one which is an outright actual vote by the populace and the other which isn't and claim both are wrong because you don't like the candidate for one and the process for the other.

Nope, I don't like the process all the way through, and the candidates are irrelevant in that regard. You just want to stomp and pout about merely disliking Trump to excuse your denial of a system that Harold Stassen knew was broken.

Open/closed primaries are different arguments than internal bylaws of the political parties themselves. But then you knew that already.

Actually, they aren't. Especially difficult though, when a given state mandates a particular practice.

      No, I'm not -

Yes, you were. The facts are right there, and so are your words.

Bernie couldn't win the DNC primary because even if he HAD won california he still wouldn't have the votes to overcome the super delegates that Hillary had already locked up and the press consistently reported that and Bernie had all but given up the primaries by the time the final states came around because Hillary was browbeating the super delegates into line.

Bernie couldn't win because of a corrupt and unrepresentative system you say? Well duh, but that gives you no reason to lie about how it happened. Frankly, you should just stick to actual facts to document a flawed system instead.

Trump won in SPITE of a faction of the RNC actively opposed to him and continues to be actively opposed to him causing a fractured legislative process.

Trump won in a flawed system that is also corrupt and unrepresentative. And the opposition he gets is often his own fault, but not directly related to the primary system.

Again - the RNC process was purely democratic and the RNC followed its laws. The DNC process was not and they DID not follow their own bylaws.

In reality, both primary systems were flawed, being corrupt and unrepresentative, and instead of realizing this, you due side to adopt a partisan posture crippled by your own lack of factual substance.

In the future you might want to actually use facts that are meaningful to the discussion at hand and not just pull wikipedia articles out of your ass.

In the future, when somebody shows you your grievous errors, you might want to try remonstrance instead of trying to yell louder so you can ignore the problem.

And no, the electoral college system is NOT broken - it's working fine equalizing the balance of power to the states with fewer populations but still having their own sovereign governments.

Nope, it does no such thing. It has ZERO structure to do that, you have just been indoctrinated to believe it does anything of the sort.

Russia no longer has the power to go toe to toe with the other major powers in the world (EU, China and the US), economically, politically or militarily. So they need to weaken other countries through less conventional means to remain a world power (I'd be very unsurprised if the Russians weren't manipulating China, mostly through North Korea, they have to get their missile technology and expertise from somewhere).

Most Republican lawmakers and strategists know very well that while lots of conservative and libertarian voters demand smaller government, few would ever accept the consequences of what that meant. As the ACA repeal failure shows, there is absolutely no will to roll back any entitlement program. Quite the opposite, in fact. I suspect in the back rooms, even as we speak, the murmurs of a single payer system are beginning to be whispered in hushed tones. The sheer unpopularity of both the House and Senate repeal efforts with the voters means there is no going back, and that ultimately, as some Conservative commentators have put it, the "Europeanization" of American health care is already beginning.

Here's the hard reality of democracy. Voters often have no idea what they need, or have often contradictory views on problems and solutions. Lawmakers, being elected to their offices, have to play to voters' fears and prejudices, but once they're in a position to deliver on those promises, the harsh reality sets in that keeping some of those promises would be disastrous, and worst of all, for any elected official, could cost them the next election. With the ACA repeal, there really was very little appetite for a repeal among most Republican lawmakers. They had never imagined they'd be in a position to actually do it, and once there, many realized that to actually repeal Obamacare, and replace it with legislation that would probably see many lose insurance, and for others (particularly older voters, the most reliable voters of them all) would see drastic premium hikes, could have severe ramifications for their electoral prospects.

I imagine there were a good many Republicans very pleased when McCain and two other GOP senators scuttled the deal.

We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end.
