Amazon Files For 'AmazonTube' and 'OpenTube' Trademarks As Fight With YouTube Gets Pettier (theverge.com)

"Amazon applied for an 'AmazonTube' trademark earlier this week, according to a filing found by TV Answer Man, as the company's public feud with Google over accessing YouTube content on Amazon's devices continues to escalate," reports The Verge. "While there's not a lot of information about what AmazonTube might be, based on the trademark application's description of 'providing non-downloadable pre-recorded audio, visual and audiovisual works via wireless networks on a variety of topics of general interest,' it sure sounds like a YouTube competitor." From the report: TechCrunch notes that Amazon has also applied for a trademark on "OpenTube," as well, which, if anything, is a more blatant name for what Google is looking to accomplish here. It's also not the first time that Amazon has been rumored to be working on its own, free video service -- earlier this year there were rumors that Amazon was planning a "freemium" version of Prime Video, although the company released a statement saying that it had no plans to do so.

The competition part is good, in the long term. But in the short term, users are getting fucked. Google has a web store where they sell Google devices, and they don't offer Amazon devices on that store, but Google is taking Youtube off the fire stick because Amazon doesn't offer Google devices in their store. It's a classic example of Google abusing their monopoly position, and I hope they get their peepee smacked hard for it. It's unethical, it's probably illegal, and it's harming consumers. They should be begging us to view content on some platform where we can't block ads... like the fire stick. Instead, I'm going to watch Youtube through Kodi, where not only am I not shown ads, but I can choose to download the video instead of watching it.

I can do that on my PC too, with Youtube Downloader HD. I have to download some videos before I can watch them, because Youtube embeds the video right over the top of the video, and that means I have to watch it through a ghosted-out, inactive video player. It only happens on some videos — notably Jay Leno's Garage. I take it to be something that happens when some copyright flag is set? Then, ironically, I download the video they specifically don't want me to download, because I otherwise can't watch it. Youtube is still pretty awesome, but they are actually losing competence. Which reminds me of G+, which Google just dicked up again by moving the +1 button to the other side of the comment box for no reason. Maybe they should make the +1 button work reliably first; sometimes, every other feature of the G+ interface works fine (like commenting, posting, etc.) but plussing posts won't work no matter how many times you click the button.

TL;DR: Google is becoming more and more incompetent in its old age.
