Senator Warns YouTube Algorithm May Be Open To Manipulation By 'Bad Actors' (theguardian.com)

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Guardian: The top-ranking Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee has warned that YouTube's powerful recommendation algorithm may be "optimizing for outrageous, salacious and often fraudulent content" or susceptible to "manipulation by bad actors, including foreign intelligence entities." Senator Mark Warner, of Virginia, made the stark warning after an investigation by the Guardian found that the Google-owned video platform was systematically promoting divisive and conspiratorial videos that were damaging to Hillary Clinton's campaign in the months leading up to the 2016 election.

"Companies like YouTube have immense power and influence in shaping the media and content that users see," Warner said. "I've been increasingly concerned that the recommendation engine algorithms behind platforms like YouTube are, at best, intrinsically flawed in optimizing for outrageous, salacious and often fraudulent content." He added: "At worst, they can be highly susceptible to gaming and manipulation by bad actors, including foreign intelligence entities."
YouTube's algorithm determines which videos to promote in the "Up next" column beside the video player. The Guardian found that "the algorithm was six times more likely to recommend videos that was damaging to Clinton than Trump, and also tended to amplify wild conspiracy theories about the former secretary of state."

Watching the whole video counts as interaction, watching 10 seconds of the video counts as (less) interaction. Commenting counts as interaction.

The problem with this is that it tends to push conspiracy theories and other nonsense to the top. The more people argue about it, the more they give it thumbs down and debunk it in the comments, the more visible it becomes.

YouTube isn't unique in this respect of course. It's well understood that social media amplifies stupid. But YouTube is unlike most other social media because it appeals to people who find reading hard or are convinced by an actual person on screen telling them something.

      Also... Russians and "bad actors".

The Democratic Party has gone pretty far down the doublespeak road during and after the 2016 election. While they say that Trump and Trump supporters are trying to stifle free speech it is really the tactics on the Democratic Party side seem the most fascist and anti free speech.

Democratic Partisans and their main stream press allies have been systematically lumping together Trump supporters with Nazis, White Supremacists and then the Russians for over two years. During the election they would overtly go out of the way to find the most reprehensible people and give them as much free press as they could handle. While guilt by association and pushing the other side off center is a time honored partisan political tactic it seems the Democratic Party went so far as to intentionally stoke and foment dangerous fringe groups on the far right and far left in order to tarnish the Republicans. Even to the extent of systematically faking hate crimes on college campuses and in communities around the country in a plain effort to mobilize black voters and volunteers in response.

And if anything it seems the preponderance of outlandish stories about Hillary Clinton served to distract from the very real record of corrupt and unethical practices by Hillary and Bill Clinton. The Clintons have been selling favors, access and even government services to very big donors including people linked to foreign governments while she was Secretary of State for their own personal gain for decades.

Pushing conspiracy theories where Hillary Clinton is dubiously linked to dozens of murders undermines the times where it looks very much like the Clintons actions have indirectly gotten people killed. How the FBI interviews with staff recorded that Hillary Clinton lost her temper and yelled at a guy and humiliated him so badly that he killed himself. A blow job is one thing, but getting so abusive to the people that worked for her that they can't "protect" the Clintons that they kill themselves is a whole other level of evil.

Any one of Hillary Clinton's serious misdeeds would have gotten any Republican hounded out of office by the press. But instead Hillary Clinton avoids scandal by creating the next fake scandal and then making people look ridiculous if they believe anything that is said about them fact or not. And yes Trump does something similar too, but instead of conspiracy theorists we see the same sorts of conspiracy theories being woven by the main stream Democratic Party press.
