Game Livestreaming Explodes, But Women Are Less Likely To Be Paid Than Men (venturebeat.com)
A new study by game research firm SuperData Research and payment company PayPal found that eSports and game videos are driving explosive growth in livestreams. But PayPal also found a gender imbalance in pay. Women are less likely to be paid for their streams than men. VentureBeat reports: PayPal said that 34 percent of livestream viewers in the U.S. have spent more than $50 on livestream content in the past few months. But despite the growth in spending, almost half of women content creators (43 percent globally, 47 percent in the U.S.) don't get paid for what they create. The U.S. had the largest gender pay gap of the countries surveyed: Almost half as many men (24 percent) do not get paid for content they create. Globally, active paying gamers polled shop across 14 different gaming platforms and nearly 30 different storefronts over the last three months, an incredible variety.
In the U.S., respondents surveyed purchased from 26 different gaming storefronts -- the third most in the world, behind Russia (27), and Australia and Canada (28 each). While Steam is highly popular among millennials globally (31 percent buy from Steam), GameStop was resoundingly popular, with 45 percent of U.S. millennial respondents reporting shopping there for gaming content. In most countries, in-game spending is within a few dollars of average spend on full games. Surprisingly, in-game spending is skewing higher among older U.S. players: those aged 35-and-over have spent $50 on average, compared to $40 for those aged 18 to 34. Meanwhile, younger gamers are spending more in full-game downloads: $63, versus $48 for gamers 35-and-over.

I fail to see the problem.
or the audience. like if it was said twitch or google ad revenue refusing to pay I could get that, but fans rarely evolve into paying people so I don't see this as being a gender thing and more
Isn't this a total meritocracy where users choose who to give money to?The US probably has the worst disparity is because if there's anyone in the world no one wants to hear from anymore it's white women about their trivial problems.
Nor are camgils which is what most of the female game streamers are. They are much more likely to be incoherent because of being on "420" than male streamers. Most of low life males are homeless, most of low life females decided they can receive money for showing what more than half the people on the planet have. I'm sorry - you are not unique, showing your "assets" makes you cheap. If you want money for "content" better put some mind into it, because tits and butt and a hole are way too common to be of any special interest.
How many men get to fuck the way to the top of their chosen profession and then claim sexual assault?
I've always thought live streaming was about skimpy chicks commenting an otherwise boring game.
"Less likely to be paid"
"Gender pay gap"
What this article pretends to be a 'great social injustice' is just trash. These are twitch streamers etc. which depend upon donations/subs for their income. People sub/donate to the better players. If the women are being given less, it is because they are lesser players.
Is it that people prefer to buy content made by men over women? Do they know ahead of time who created the content or is it that somehow the content created by men is chosen more often without the buyer being aware of the creators sex? Is it that maybe women chose to give more free content away? The numbers in the article can be interpreted in many different ways depending on what other assumptions you make.
Shocking and sexist news:
Women Basketball players make less money than Male players in the NBL.
... and all men should get paid what Oprah makes. If Roseane had said that about Condeleza Rice they would have given her a raise.
Act like a man but think like an evil Feminazi.
More cleavage.
Just keep pushing that phase, apply it EVERYWHERE and people will continue to get desensitized to it.
Just like the BS story out of MIT about the "gender pay gap" leading female Uber drivers to be paid less than their male counterparts.... gee forget that they simply drive less, that doesn't fit the narrative
In the games I play, the best (as in ranked) streamers (and gamers) are usually men. Why would you watch bad players? Just to balance some random statistics?
A female streamer has 100x easier time growing a viewer base then any male streamer has and its pretty much a fact. So chances are they will likely get more in donations of subs then male will get.
What is the distribution of the sex of active stream creators? What is the distribution of sex of their viewers? What is the distribution of the sex of the gamer community? I am willing to bet that there are more men who create game streams than women. There are also more men who are a part of the gamer community, so this is only surprising to those who have no ability to understand bias of data and distributions. If you have 1 female streamer and she doesn't get paid, 100% of female streamers aren't paid. If you have 100 male streamers and only 43 of them aren't paid, 57 percent of male streamers are paid for their efforts.
Streamers as a whole does get paid by their viewers. The larger viewer base, the more likely you are to get paid and the higher payout you can expect. These data seem biased and collected only to prove the point that gamers are sexist.
Who wants to watch a stream of Farmville, the Sims, or Bejewelled? (I kid, I kid!)
"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education." - Mark Twain
I've seen female streamers get 500$ donations in minute intervals.
There are plenty of horny, wealthy men out there.
Really? There are people complaining that they are not getting paid to play video games? Is this serious article?
Maybe they just need better training.
You mean game developers? Those are entirely different people.
Ezekiel 23:20
What is the quality of the content?
What is the quantity of content?
It all comes down to views. More quality yields more views. More quantity yields more views. More views increases the chances you will receive any donations at all.
I would guess that more males watch twitch streams than females. Maybe male streamers know what the audience wants better than the females.
Just looking at the number of content creators is inadequate. Without quantifying the quality or quantity of the content output, the findings are pretty meaningless and are clearly gender-bait statistics.
Newsflash: Men are less likely to be paid for webcam stripshows. See anyone complaining about that?
It seems to contradict my personal observation. I know a few streamers and women seem to have a much easier time, provided that they are reasonably attractive. So, where is the catch?
Maybe my observation are just annectodal? Maybe women are proportionally more likely than men to stream, men are more likely to stream only if they can make money out of it? Or maybe the study is flawed in some way.
In particular, what is a "video game content creator"? Is anyone with a twitch account and a single video considered a streamer, does it count only people who can monetize, which typically requires a certain amount of views? It can make a huge difference since many streamers don't get paid simply because viewers simply don't have the option to pay them. Also, there are many ways of getting paid: subscriptions, donations, sponsorship, patreon, merch... which ones are taken into account?
This could only have been written by somebody who barely even knows what streaming is. Almost everyone tries it at some point. The proportion of those who establish regular output is miniscule. Of those, the proportion that gets paid off either gender is half of a nothing. You know who does get paid, very consistently? Titty streamers. Everyone knows this. Twitch doesn't bother them because they're one of the biggest income streams. This shit is fake. It's propaganda, plain and simple.
A shadow of its former self. It makes me sad.
This is usually a very important criteria when it comes to assessing a gender pay gap. So did they compare what kind of games the streamers played, what kind of commentaries they made while playing?
Not all games have the same popularity among viewers. Sometimes it also counts who streamed what first. The commentary offered during streaming also seems to be an important part of this. From personal experience I know that some people have a knack for delivering entertaining commentary. I'm inclined to give them some money in exchange for their services. On the other side of the spectrum you have people who are downright annoying. If I had to give them money I'd do it to make them shut up and just play the game. But why pay them if you can close the stream instead? There's so much competition to choose from out there. At times it can't even be blamed on the individual streamer because some voices are more pleasant to listen to than others. But that's how the world of entertainment works.
All important factors that have to be considered when disproving your null hypothesis here. So if there's a large overlap in content between male and female gamers, meaning that they play the same games and offer similar commentary, all while females get considerable less donations, then we'd have a gender pay gap here and may need to look into the causes for this. Maybe they did look for this, but I'm just incapable of finding it. I'd appreciate it if someone pointed me into the right direction here. Because without this due diligence has not been done correctly and makes it look like they jumped to conclusions.
Can't we just have a nice socially-acceptable straight white male bashing session without asking questions like that?
And for the love of social justice DO NOT MENTION that more women rake in lots of dosh on instagram and such than men do.
All the SJW schtick, metrosexual wimpiness, and total sitzpinkler candyassification won't get you laid.
Hawt chicks still dig real men.
It is becoming increasingly clear that we do need to rate journalists based on their integrity. Slashdot has increasingly discarded all integrity and is running endless clickbate trash aimed at generating angry discussion. Quality journalism has died and we're left with a media that focuses entirely on proactive trash to drive clicks.
It would be amusing to see how people rated the integrity of editors like BeauHD and msmash. Pravda would be a good wakeup call to journalists and might help them realise that the public no longer trust them and now view them as scum.
We JUST had this posted less than 24 hours ago?

You're still posting politics / identity politics warfare here?
When will you people get that the *vast majority* of what few remaining members you have on this site aren't interested in this. It's not relevant to this website or fitting to what people STILL COME HERE FOR.
I'm not trying to oppress women, join an MRA group or any other such ridiculous thing, I just want to come here for absolute tech news and articles of interest, ideally which are logical, scientific and consistent, not stuff which is a matter of varying opinions on if they are true, or politically based.
I'll take the bait though, I'll take it.
Are you guys genuinely claiming that you think women streamers make less than men or are paid less?
There could be dozens of reasons, let me list some.
Women may be less likely to try streaming due to whining / abuse / harassment from some kiddies.
Despite the pushy lying articles about video games, women are by far NOT 50% or over 50% of the market.
Seeing as most people watching streamers are men, they may prefer to watch men, depending on type of humour, type of game played, perhaps itâ(TM)s just the dedication, men can be quite obsessive about things.
Then weâ(TM)ve got my main point, the âboob factorâ(TM) thereâ(TM)s without a doubt a large consistency of very dull, very simple streamers who wear revealing clothing, play games, poorly, squeal now and then, âaccidentallyâ(TM) bend over in revealing clothing and they really are offering a lower quality product than many dedicated male streamers. HOWEVER they clean up, for obvious reasons (Sex sells)
This is also bad for other women streamers who just want to play legitimately without using their bodies to get viewers, they get hassled by kids who think all women streamers are boobs out.
To imply that this is as simple as just a plain sexism thing of man vs woman thing, is insane, the differences vary far more than just the bloody gender of the streamer.
This political stuff needs to stop being posted here, itâ(TM)s ramped up IMMENSELY in the last 18 months and Iâ(TM)m seeing more and more pissed off Slashdot posters due to it.
cry me a river titstreamers
Granted, so does the original article, which also goes on to discuss esports as a monetization opportunity. So, the article itself is about three things, and in both the article and the summary, the gender-bias topic of the headline is actually the shortest part!
I'm left to assume that the pay-gap component was slapped onto a rather dry piece about retail and esports in order to draw eyes.
Also that the summary is a mess that needs re-editing.
They have more money to spend. That's not 'skewing', its just a fact. It doesn't surprise me at all that millennials prefer video games to real activities. If they ever have real mortgages or real families of their own, this trend will probably fade away, just like the sharing and gig economies. This can all be fun when you're 25, it is less fun when you really need a stable pay check or salary and have real bills to pay. Mom and dad aren't going to be around forever.
Seriously, why do I want to pay either a man or woman for playing a video game all day? Especially when I can put that money towards my own game play experience??
They are nice guys but tend to look for facts to prove their beliefs.
so women should dominate both livestreaming fields: porn and games??
can't men ahve anything that isn't the product of the patriarchy???
i can't wait for those good sex robots.
Yep, it's sexism, that must be it.
First off, this site needs to drop the identity politics. I've been browsing this site since around 2000 and I'm really tired of seeing this crap instead of tech news.
It's a well known fact that the gender pay gap is primarily explained by career choices and the decision to stay at home after having children. So you can stop with the "The U.S. had the largest gender pay gap of the countries surveyed" bullshit. Lying to us right off the bat won't help your argument.
It's been my experience that the top female streamers are titty streamers who hang around in games asking for things, and the white knights of the internet seem to like giving them what they want. Zombie unicorn is a prime example of this. The only thing she's done outside of titty streaming is try to create a fake bully hunters program. But you know we should pay her because she's a woman right? She deserves your money!!!!
Women get huge amounts of money thrown at them for being women on Twitch. Look at the Slut IRL section
How about releasing the same stats for sites like cam4 and chaturbate?
So do we want to level the payments there too?
I can't believe anyone gets paid for this shit. This is narcissists splatting their lame lives on the Internet for all to see. It's a way of boosting your ego through likes or thumbs up or +1s or whatever. Maybe women get more value out of the ego boost.
People are less likely to watch women's tennis than men's tennis.
If women produce sub-par content to what men produce, more people will be inclined to watch content made by men.
When everyone is made to win, we all lose.
Nathan
Most girls on Twitch are just a pair of tits and they think that's enough to get them paid. Well sweetheart on the internet titties are free, so if you want to get paid as a streamer, you need to be interesting and compelling.
I have been in the streaming space for years, and it's filled with opportunistic women who get tons of donations from thirsty guys who are super lonely and think they have a chance with the streamer.
This study is wrong, and is more evidence of propaganda skewed towards a feminist perspective.
Here's the problem with this study:
Males vs. Females who have good personalities (A good personality is required to get somewhere long term and get partnered / paid) ..
Of them, women if they're even remotely attractive immediately have the advantage over men. Bar none. Indisputable.
The argument against that comes from men with zero personality and thus who are boring af yelling at women saying they just get paid because they show cleavage on stream. The women point out that if the males complaining had any talent they would be better off and that it takes more than looks.
This is because even if the woman is attractive if she has zero personality and is boring, she won't make it either.
But that's why I start off saying "males and females WITH good personalities, entertainment value that is viable for success in the streaming space"
So that's why this is BS. Of all the women who make it I would be willing to bet everything I have they make far more money than males, and if they want ANYTHING all they have to do is set up a donation bar on Streamlabs and bam. They get it fast.
I've spoken with a female streamer with integrity who has told me that many female streamers know that they can squeeze money from thirsty men and do it all the time, and their boyfriends help.
They need to shut the fuck up about wage gap already and stop dividing the world. They are evil fucks. Who are they? I don't know. Look at the company that owns the publication posting the article / doing the study.
Explain.
Petty sure twitch thots make a ton.
This is such a shit article.
The abundance of social justice agenda pushing, the complete lack of data and the way everything is being spun has made my overall respect for Slashdot drop by quite a margin. I'd pick this apart objectively and scientifically if it hadn't already been done dozens of times by others already.
BeauHD, shame on you for posting this absolute trash journalism. This article wasn't meant to inform or inspire, it was dumped here to start a fight in the comments section. I didn't know Slashdot was so desperate for clicks that we're now going full-tilt SJW. It doesn't make money, it doesn't bring in loyal readers, it will only RUIN YOUR BUSINESS as it has done to fucking everyone who has banked on building an audience out of pandering to Marxists. It doesn't work.
Wut? Am I to understand that people pay money to watch other people play video games?
I've heard of this before, if you leave out the "video" part. But that was also always a silly thing. I just assumed it would some day die out as people got tired of sports-as-a-thing-you-watch-instead-of-do. But now I'm hearing it's happening in a new form, and isn't going to die? Oh geez.
Someone call out Beau Hamilton for being one of the cuck editors for continually posting this clickbait patriarchy shit that doesn't belong on reddit.
This link of his is in story above.. Please tell him what a piece of shit he is.
and quickly. Everyone is oppressed in some dimension (not stipulating that point in this case though.) Just go make your way, you can do it. The only one keeping you back is yourself.
If people choose not to spend their money on watching women gamers that is NOT a 'pay gap'...maybe their just shitty 'entertainers'...stop with the pay gap bullshit. Maybe stop tracking gender as a defining factor...
Show their tits in an inset livestream.
Hey, what are we going to do about male camwhores? That whole industry has exploded, but men get played less (if at all) for showing their swinging bits to strangers.
(This is something that must be corrected.)
People searching click on the first results they find with the correct game name?
Study why some content creators are getting watched.
Is it new people finding the results? Returning viewers?
Is it their skill? The type game they play? Their ability to talk well of a game and having a real understanding of related game history?
An ability to encode their game play in a better way that streams to a more professionals standard?
People just return to the first person they found in the past and like the game play and stay with that person?
Domestic spying is now "Benign Information Gathering"
Numbers don't even make sense? 34% of content viewers contributed to the live stream. 43% of women streamers don't get paid. These 2 numbers are meaningless by themselves. What % of male streamers get paid for their content? How much do they even get paid (both sexes). What % of both sexes created a one time account and don't actively stream anymore? What % of both sexes actively market themselves? What's their differing marketing strategy? What is the breakdown of game categories played by both sexes? What are the racial demographics of the streamers included? What are the nationalities of both viewers and streamers?
These are all questions a real, objective, honest data scientist would ask. Given the lack of overall statistical competence displayed by the majority of these feminist articles I'm starting to think woman actually are worse scientists than men. This is a counterintuitive conclusion given that woman generally perform better in higher education than men. Then again given that people with higher IQ statistically both lie more and are more lazy than people with lower IQ maybe the woman have us men beat in competency and all these biased articles are just a reflection of that.
...to the fact that all you need is a low-cut shirt and you'll get thousands of views without much more effort having to be applied. In many cases, I'd wager all the attention these streamers get is enough (it's all about fame... style over substance) to the point that many don't even stop and think "hm... should I be paid for my time?"
Show their tits in an inset livestream.
That would be a quick way to get banned from most LiveStreaming sites who have Community Rules in place designed to maintain standards of professionalism, and prohibit content that would be considered Unsafe for younger viewers (Ages 13 to 18) or get their sites classified into X-rated categories by web filtering companies.
You'll find most of them on Twitch in the "IRL" section, talking about the dumbest shit with their "fans", shaking their asses in front of the camera, or doing retarded "ASMR" videos while raking in donations. They deserve to earn less.
This seems fair to me.
Men are paid far less, if anything at all, for streaming pictures of their tits. Yet women continue to rake in disproportionately high amounts for the very same act.
Why do so many SJW get hung up on "male genitalia" as the only difference between men and women ?
I thought gay men and transsexual men also have penises. Black men also do. But neither are subject to your righteous anger.
So why keep talking about dicks ?
I don't see how this is really news. For the most part streamers rely on Twitch subscribers and Patreon donations. People support who they want to. You can't really force people to support creators they don't like so any disparity in income levels is simply market driven.
And though I watch streamers of both genders, I actually watch more female streamers (and my Patreon support is about 70%/30% split between females and males, respectively). Still, who people choose to support is their own decision.
"People who think they know everything are very annoying to those of us who do."-Mark Twain
Have you ever heard of cleavage? Tight clothing?
Not enough women are being given opportunity to die at work, men dominate in this area. I suggest some sort of positive discrimination to ensure equal outcomes.
#identitypoliticsarestupid
Why is the gender pay gap so important, when the work mortality gap gets ignored?
You know why.
Both choices benefit women.
Could it be possible that the other 43% of women who donâ(TM)t get paid donâ(TM)t want to get paid, have another stream of income or are just doing it for fun? Seems like more study into why they would keep doing it for nothing is needed.
What is unsafe about somebody showing the upper half of their body unclothed?
So much misogyny and hate in general.
It is sad but is it really a shock? Does it mean we are attracted to men over women? Find men more interesting or intertaining over women. Or like most sports we naturally segregated the sexes when we do comparisons.
Im always shocked that men prefer to watch male sports over female.
If I understand correctly, money comes from viewers, but how viewers know if the streamer is male or female? If they cannot, it means they discriminate just on the stream content, which suggests male and female play differently. This is an interesting point.
American conservatives don't like it, they prefer a flat, hairy chest.
I don't see any guys bitching about not being able to be paid for being a birth surrogate.
Chicks are better at certain things, dudes are better at other things. HELLO - get over it already.
Your expect guys (big egos) to watch some inferior(perception is reality) girl play a game and admit they are better then them?
I know some guys pay to be humiliated, but I don't think the market is that big.
Tell you what, do a study that sees what gender is paying for streaming game content and then add a little dose of real life.
Have you ever been a boss? No one sits here wringing their hands going, "Haha, because this new hire is a woman, I'm going to pay her less, haha!"
https://fee.org/articles/good-news-elizabeth-warren-women-already-have-equal-pay/
How many women are playing the latest games vs games that are 5-20 years old? Few women build their own PC's, have LAN parties, or care about framerates. Out of all of the female streamers on Twitch that I watch, only 1 built a PC but had a man spec out and purchase all the parts, and another man talk her through the process. There is zero inclination to do something independently or any willingness to fail. The other women just play old games on whatever laptop their Dad bought them for college or play SNES/N64/Wii games. The only thing holding women back is a lack of guts to forge their own path through life, they rely too heavily on men to be their knights in shining armor. Obviously, equality means nothing to women, it's just another thing they expect men to do for them.
What is unsafe about somebody showing the upper half of their body unclothed?
For starters.... The many Schools and Libraries that receive federal ERATE funds to help pay for technology and communications infrastructure and services are required to employ technological protection measures to filter/block access from their computers and networks to obscene content, pornography, nudity, etc.
And yes.... the community standards within the US are that videos/pictures exposing frontal nudity and/or also the upper half of the female body unclothed or exposed in a suggestive manner is content unsafe for people under the age of majority.
