China's Brightest Children Are Being Recruited To Develop AI 'Killer Bots' (scmp.com)

According to The South China Morning Post, "some of China's smartest students have been recruited straight from high school to begin training as the world's youngest AI weapons scientists." A total of 27 boys and four girls all under the age of 18 were chosen for the four-year "experimental program for intelligent weapons systems" at the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) from more than 5,000 candidates. From the report: The BIT is one of the country's top weapons research institutes, and the launch of the new program is evidence of the weight it places on the development of AI technology for military use. "These kids are all exceptionally bright, but being bright is not enough," said a BIT professor who was involved in the screening process but asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the subject. "We are looking for other qualities such as creative thinking, willingness to fight, a persistence when facing challenges," he said. "A passion for developing new weapons is a must ... and they must also be patriots."

Each student will be mentored by two senior weapons scientists, one from an academic background and the other from the defense industry, according to the program's brochure. After completing a short program of course work in the first semester, the students will be asked to choose a speciality field, such as mechanical engineering, electronics or overall weapon design. They will then be assigned to a relevant defense laboratory where they will be able to develop their skills through hands-on experience.

      Look, we will never have a global governance as long as Russia and China are not under control. Those bases are to contain and crush them. We were all set to take out Russia until they rigged our election for Trump. Hillary was chomping at the bit for war. China is after Russia. Then we can drop borders, allow free movement of people, have one global currency, and at last have a government composed of intelligent people who will make the hard decisions that benefit everyone, not just a few bankers in London and New York.

      Yeah, it's unbelievable that China still thinks it can go on with the war. It's been what, 17 years in Afghanistan for example and the conflict keeps going despite massive casualties, a bill in the of over 2 trillion that could have been used more productively and no end in sight. It's almost like this is a problem that cannot be solved with military force, but stubborn China and their massive fleet of aircraft carries and overseas bases doesn't seem to care. Gotta kill the terrorists until there are no longer terrorists and finally there will be peace on Earth, right?

      The ancient Chinese emperor George Bush once famously said in 2002: "This crusade, this war on terrorism, is going to take a while." But what he didn't realize is that terrorism is not an ideology, it's a tactic. You can't have a war on a tactic that's been used by insurgencies through time immemorial and expect it to someday be 'defeated'.

      Truly, the Chinese have a lot to learn. But here we stand in the west, powerless to do anything about this wanton madness, watching as the dragonlords, blinded by their ideology of 'Chinese exceptionalism' keep turning large rocks into smaller rocks with precision guided state of the art weaponry, a single unit of which could be used to put many kids through school or provide them with health care like many western countries do. Truly a sad, sad state of affairs.

      One day I can only hope the Chinese take a lesson from the great American general Sun Tzu who wrote: 'He who knows when he can fight and when he cannot will be victorious.'. & There is no instance of a nation benefitting from prolonged warfare.'

      I think it is past time that the US substantially reduces its troop presence in Japan and Korea (as well as Germany, Italy and the UK). Yes, the US does have worldwide interests and might want a few bases overseas and forward deployed supplies for logistical reasons, but WWII is long over and the level of troop presence is clearly reflective of post WWII occupation rather than modern military requirements for keeping the peace.

      But why do you think China will be the same after that? Today's China is nothing like Mao's China or the Imperial China from before that. It continues to change. Tomorrow's well-educated Chinese will ask for even more changes in their society.

      US today is not like the US from 100 years ago. And tomorrow's China will not be today's China.

      I am not worried about the Chinese. They are a practical people and mean well. I am only impressed about all the fresh-off-the-boat Chinese in US. They have all been humble, polite, gifted and hard-working.

      Every dominant culture in history made its own mistakes imprinting itself on the world. The Chinese may too. But that's OK.

      What are the alternatives? The liberals live their liberal dream of all mix, no borders, we are all siblings etc which is not shared by majority of humanity effectively removing chances of society of European origin to survive. The other side in the same societies i.e. nationalist is too weak to be of any positive value but it is strong enough to be a distraction and of negative value. Then there is the rest - the African and Muslim societies from Mediterranean till Bangladesh having a field day every time Merkel like politician opens borders and social system for all. Seems to me like Chinese have a fair chance at it and maybe they should be granted one. With ugliness of the oppression of citizen ranking and other inventions they still let you thrive economically. At least if you do not complain. They do not have (yet?) the obsession with self-destruction that plagues Western societies. If I had to chose I would prefer Chinese oppression from rapists from the south.
      But that is my view, you do not have to agree.

    Kill bots let me do away that problem. Now all I need is a couple of geeky engineers to run my military and oppress everybody else. Mix in automated factories for making my stuff and I don't even need consumers. I can just own everything and use the ownership to decide who lives and who dies, giving me ultimate power.

    And as a member of the ruling class, what else is there for me?

    Present politically correct scorn and get modpoints. But have you actually looked at what the defense industry is up to? They are actually doing what the parent poster was criticizing with "cybersecurity." All a woman needs is a 3.3 GPA and they can get 40k a year in an appropriate program, no other strings attached.

    Those opportunities do not exist for men. The closest is the DoD stipend program which is a free ride and living expenses for a 3.8 GPA in an appropriate program plus a contract forcing them to work a certain number of years for the DoD, and that one is open to both genders. Good luck getting someone that is good at disrupting systems to work within a rigid system like that.

    Wonder why security is still shit. That's it right there. The weak and traditionally uninterested are rewarded while the talented languish.

    Undoing my modding you insightful for this : time and time again we see people requesting equality of outcome when it come to gender distribution in work. Time and time again if a company does not have a 50/50 in gender distribution roughly or a rough distribution in minority at work comparing to the national distribution , there are people pointing finger at those firms. Which have then to spend money showing their white paws. The problem is , some people see "gender equality" , or which ever equality, and think equality of outcome. But the reality is what is required is equality of opportunity. Outcome can STILL have a slanted gender distribution (or whichever other distribution). And while I think like you the OP was not graceful in its expression, I DO think we have a problem when people strive for equality of outcome (especially when it is only equality of outcome when it goes in one direction : too many male versus female, and in good jobs. I am still waiting people rail against waste disposal service on why there are not enough female garbage taker).

    I think the trend in dangerous. We should absolutely get equality of opportunity, because this is the moral things to do, and because we may hobble ourselves because we put obstacle to the next big scientist/ceo/researcher/engineer/whichever because they are not the "correct" gender/religion/sexuality/skin color. But equality of opportunity is another way to hobble ourselves.

      The problem with that distinction is that equality of opportunity cannot exist if people are born with different talents and backgrounds. Consider it this way: if we define a point in time t0 at which the "equal opportunity" race begins, at the end of which, let's call it t1, some will have won in terms of outcomes while others will have lost, that ignores that t0 itself is the set of different outcomes of a race that began at t-1. In fact, you can set t0 at any point in the life of the individual, or even before it (see recent research showing how one's father and even grandfather's life events affect one's epigenetic makeup), and that point will be the set of different outcomes of some earlier supposedly equal-opportunity starting point.

      As such, there's no real distinction between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome, as making sure that any t0 involves equal opportunities means that it, as the outcome of t-1, is an equal outcomes scenario too.

      Given that there's no objective qualitative distinction between "opportunity" and "outcome" then, that whatever point we chose for that divide is arbitrary, and from that adopt one of three positions:

      a) Abandon the notion that equality of opportunity (and thus of outcome) is a good.

      Or keep the the notion that equality of opportunity-outcome is a good and then either:

      b) Opt for the one t0 to strive to set as equal-outcome as possible so as to have it becoming the best possible equal-opportunity starting point for t1+. (This one is similar to your point, but requiring much more active effort.)

      I'll agree that inequality of outcome is not evidence of discrimination, per se. However, given the way that the human brain over-generalizes patterns, I can pretty much guarantee that in any situation where there might naturally be inequality of outcome, there is almost certainly discrimination taking place as our brains try to eliminate the "anamolous" minority that our brain is desperately trying to "prove" don't belong.

      We structure society to eliminate the minority; our brains constantly tell us that this person doesn't belong and that its a mistake they're here. Heck, the brain of the person themselves is constantly telling them they don't belong. All because brain structures designed to meet the needs of hominids a few million years ago don't to well with nuance, constantly whispering "one of these things just doesn't belong".

      Our brains are simply not wired to handle reality. The idea that bell curves with different means overlap is difficult to understand for the majority of humans, and even harder to hold on to in daily life.

      So, given the discrimination a minority is going to face due to the way our brains handle information, pushing another meme to disrupt the incorrect heuristic seems over-all welfare increasing. My guess is in a situation where a natural outcome is 80/20, human beings will structure their society and behaviour to make it 95/5 (if not 100/0), and pushing back with a meme of equality of outcome meme might make it 90/10.

    If China will not close down its program by itself, a coalition will need to be formed to bomb the Chinese sites where this is taking place, to prevent it from happening.

    Truth tellers are seldom popular. The concept of "don't say vicious things" is a fine theory.     Meanwhile, the next generation of bright Chinese students seem to have no qualms about equipping their government with AI weapons. Maybe the American tech workers at Google and elsewhere need to rethink their refusal to work on military projects. If the Chinese end up conquering the world through force of arms, what will that mean for the children or grandchildren of these Google employees? The Chinese themselves were once a conquered people, during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Americans and Europeans shouldn't think that China will wouldn't do the same to them in the 21st century if given the chance.
