Facebook is Down
Facebook, the world's largest social networking website, is down for many, users say. Third-party web monitoring tool DownDetector corroborates the claim, adding that more than 11,000 people have reported issues with accessing Facebook in the last 30 minutes or so.
Facebook's outage means social buttons and other Facebook functionalities that are embedded all over the web are also facing issue. Update: Instagram appears to be down, too, for some users.
Update 2: In a statement, a Facebook spokesperson said, "We're aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible."

It could be some people cannot access Facebook, but for me it's been up all morning (and still is) - I see content from as recently as 11 minutes ago...
So it doesn't seem like Facebook is down so much as, there is some kind of large scale network anomaly somewhere. Are any other sites affected for people?

If you type www.facebook.com, you get an error message.
BUT, if you click on a link to a specific page.
Example: https://www.facebook.com/busin...
The page resolves. so, not completely down as we all had hoped.

It is a good show of how many people are either paid to waste their own time or the time of others, in the case of driving divisions between the populations of the world using good old CIA tactics... One wonders how dumb people deal with all the propaganda though and ultimately that ruines the populations motivative to do good. In other words, propaganda undermines the very nations that use it and as they increase the use of it, more and more people become cynical and stop wanting to help create a better world for their children and the following generations... Instead some asshat politician steals all the money at the top of the political ladder because of greed and the sense of power that comes from abusing people below themselves.

...realize that there are around 750,000,000 people who care WAY more about this than the number of people who care if Slashdot goes down.
You can laugh, sneer, and make so-called witty comments, but you're in the minority. Compared to Facebook, Slashdot is nugatory.
More to the point, where is any kind of technical analysis or discussion? The total abandonment of any actual technical commentary in favor of childish rhetoric is why I years ago stopped logging in to my >20 year old /. account, and barely come here any more.

Go to Google+? Oh wait, that's dead too.
Almost every day I find more reasons to be grateful that my innate skepticism kept/keeps me far from things like Twitter, Facebook, Google, etc. I enjoy seeing -good- tech evolve, at least most of the time. I generally trust tech stuff. I don't trust the humans that profit from it. Money corrupts absolutely.
Social media is simply dangerous. Dangerous due to what the unethical business/advertising side is doing to/with our info, and dangerous because of what the entirety of social media is doing to human society. Too much BS being presented as truth. It's being (mostly)cleverly gamed, and presents an insidious, massive threat to the human beans on our rock. Today, in the growing idiocracy/Trumpworld, there's little that can/will try to control the evil that grows between the pages.
I just got a glimpse of our dystopian future. When it first started having issues today, FB only showed me recent posts from my mother-in-law.

Silly. 0.0.0.0 is simply the dotted-4 represention of, wait for it, ... 0. It's a 32-bit number, that's all. If you wanted, most browsers will accept the 32-bit number form of a dotted-4 IP address (for http:; generally https: will not work w/o a hostname). Try it for a site that works with http:. 1.2.3.4 is
1 x 2^24 +
2 x 2^16 +
3 x 2^8 +
4
----
0x01020304 base-16, or
http://16909060/index.html
Assuming there's a website at 1.2.3.4.
To your WildAssClaim, it's not. But, often, the domain is not as simple as "facebook.com", but something like "adf.56032.random.stuff.facebook.com" or so on. A router may block all that on just "facebook.com", but, for example, Windows hosts file won't.
It is faster on hosts load/parse to use 0 in hosts where possible (smaller files load faster + internal parse is less characters per line of the File Open/Read-Write/Flush-Close too programmatically).
* Put it THIS way - don't take MY word for it alone but take the word of a Comp. Sci. Masters Degreed MS person who WAS (then @ least) the head of the Microsoft Windows' Performance Division here I quoted saying so https://slashdot.org/comments....

P.S.=> Hosts don't make FALSE POSITIVES either like wildcarding systems do - specific blocks BLOCK specific known threats & don't harm INNOCENT sites... apk

Not nearly enough. Facebook has many domains and uses multiple levels of subdomains.
A better approach would be to block entire domains, not just the two "hosts" facebook.com and www.facebook.com.
An even better idea is to blacklist all IP addresses assigned to AS32934, which you can get from whois or here: https://ipinfo.io/AS32934
But that still won't block all of Facebook, because like many other web sites, Facebook uses CDNs and clouds. So, blocking their own IP addresses isn't sufficient, and you can't block all the other addresses that Facebook can use because lots of other sites are behind those same addresses. An IDP cannot be practically enforced by a small scale user.
No one uses Facebook for anything they couldn't accomplish with email. So umm whatever. Maybe they will finally learn the lesson of decentralized services though probably not.

A modicum of politeness for strangers? You must be new around Facebook.
Freedom = (Meaningful - Coerced) Choice != (Speech | Beer^2), and sad sock puppets' bad mods avail them naught.
Takes a lot of resources to delete all that lifelog data.
To put it more precisely, Facebook is useless in a manner inconsistent with its normal uselessness.
Goes against everything I've learned in 30 years of system administration, so for Windows it's probably true.
Oh, that's right ...they'll be back,,,

They have a few other annoying domains for their tracking pixels that you should toss in /etc/hosts too.

It's poor form, though.
Maybe FB hired System of a Down to play the office party? And something went wrong, someone misheard, they pulled the plug, they heard "we want the system down" instead of "we want System of a Down"!
So improbable, yet I want this to be the explanation!
