  1. Look into pc104 or biscuit pc's on Low Powered, Cheap, *Small* Webservers? · · Score: 1

If you REALLY want low power look to industrial embedded pc catalogs/websites. Some can be quite expensive, but if size/electricity drain is more important than speed, this could be the thing for you. I would personally stay VERY far away from cyrix though, I had a 6x86 once... it was the most unstable piece of... it's in my parent's basement now running windows ;P If you want x86 I'd say go for an AMD 5x86 133. A company called advantech makes 'biscuit pc's' one version has a 5x86 with built in ethernet, vidcard, ide, serial, is the size of a 3.5" hd and consumes 10 watts. The whole deal goes for under 300 dollars I believe. I was just reading a site a friend referred me to (we're more interested in wearables) called pc104.com. It has links to (you guessed it) anything that involves support for pc104, including a 50mhz(slow) older arm processor pc with built in ehternet/video that runs on 1.5 watts!!! My friend ventured that it would be about the speed of a 486dx33 though, which is unfortunate, but I could run this thing for an hour on a single NiMH AA battery!!! Anyway, not sure this has helped much but best of luck.

  2. You want swing 1.0.3 (which contains jfc 1.1) on IRCAM's jMax released under GPL · · Score: 1

It sounds like you got swing 1.1.1, what you really want as far as I can tell is swing 1.0.3 which CONTAINS the jfc 1.1. I could be wrong since I haven't gotten around to compiling yet, but since jMax depends on jdk 1.1.6 minimum, swing 1.0.3 is about the only package that would make sense with that since swing 1.1.1 requires jdk 1.1.8. So I just assumed that when they said jMax required swing 1.1, they meant it required jfc 1.1, hence swing 1.0.3. I hope that was helpful. If somebody else doesn't correct me by the morning when I compile it, I'll post whether it worked or not ;P

  7. Hehe, glad you were only referring to still film.. on 35mm Handbook · · Score: 1

IMHO video doesn't hold a candle to motion picture film (even super 8). I can almost understand the money aspect in this situation... but I guess I do hold a strong bias in this area, and also how the motion picture industry is completely hooked on avid and how nobody actually 'cuts' film anymore... I think it's quite fun... but I guess if you are working on the latest blockbuster it feels more like a job than fun... oh well...
I guess the main difference I see between digital stills and high quality video is that in a digital still you can mess it up more easily so it conveys a different look/feel than with digital video. It could also be how I associate film with movies, digital stills with computer gfx, and video with TV. I don't own a TV for many reasons, and lack of money is not one of them...

I just got myself a digital camera... and it kicks ass!!! Glass lens, 1600x1200, works with linux, and best of all even though it would appear to be @ least half-automatic always, you can kind of use root permissions to make it do what you want. And that doesn't include a soldering iron... :) I'm a real manual-nut, I've been using an old Pentax K-1000 (gotta love the hand crank...) and plan to keep using it, but usually I stare @ my puter so much that I generally scan shit or project, I'm not a big print person. Not only can I get wonderful instant 1600x1200 gratification, but I can also use my digicam as an 850 dollar light meter for my Pentax ;P Of course the digicam still has the same flaws you'd expect in any ccd camera, so I would advise against taking picutes of zebras, etc. No I never plan to abandon film, when I get rich I'll start being a film biggot again, but when you shoot as much film as I like to shoot you better get a second job or start eating nothing but Ramen...
(P.S.- If anybody cares I got a Nikon 950, lists for 1k, sells for like 800, got it cuz it will do long exposures/hi-res mostly, cheers)

Definitely not worth the extra cash. A Celeron might be ok, but unless you need the better quake3 performance, go AMD. I've got a k62-350 on a FIC motherboard, but I think I'd wait for the k6-3 or k-7. The k-7 will apparently use DEC Alpha style motherboards. 17. FF4 sucked, try FF5 on Completely-CGI people for FF movie · · Score: 1

I mean in 4 you couldn't change anybody's class or anything and it just sucked out loud, but in FF5 they have this whole skill system where you can build up peoples strengths in different classes, almost as if you were playing as seperate classes, but then you can start building up strengths somewhere else so all in all it's a lot more flexible. I've only tried out the translated ROM, but I heard they re-made it and translated it for PSX or something. Now, I'm not saying that this at all makes FF7 or anything after it any better, but I truly think FF5 is the best in the FF series. And yes, I WOULD pay money for it IF they ported it to LINUX!!! (not an emu that runs in linux mind you, linux itself)

  18. I always liked the FF games... on Completely-CGI people for FF movie · · Score: 1

...but thought the plots were always quite, no, REALLY dumb. I must say that you can't do anything in the 'fantasy' genre through Live Action however, and have been waiting for a CGI fantasy for a while. I still think anime is the way to go, however, and think they'd be best NOT trying to make it completely realistic, ya know, make the characters look kinda strange on purpose so people can't say 'that doesn't look real!!!' I mean I'm sure half the posts here are in regards to her skin tone/all that metal shit that looks totally fake. Actually what I think the real problem is that they are spending too much time on the PEOPLE and not enough time on everything else. Then it turns into the same whole problem of doing fantasy with live action where the people and landscape looks real but the magic looks like crap. All in all I wish them luck, however, and hope the magic looks cool cuz I mean those magic effects were some of the only things keeping on until ff6 (No I don't have a PSX).

In recent news today industry leaders were baffled when they realized that the engineers at microsoft were actually developing something. They were developing the most chaotic OS known to man. One MS employee was quoted as saying "Yes, WINDOWS 2K (TM) will be based on such advanced chaos theory that trying to comprehend it will render you insane. So, my advice would be to just sit back and let it do what it does. This is based on years of advanced research, we have found that often people would rather not be working, or maybe they are losing -40 to 50 at quake, so in theory the machine would lock up or 'blue screen' at this point. With the chaotic fators involved, Windows 2K (TM) will be able to calculate just when to crash so as to make your life easier!"
