  1. Cogent Sucks on Blackout Shows Net's Fragility · · Score: 2, Interesting

As a customer who has had Cogent inflicted on us (when Verio sold all their domestic internet lines to Cogent), we've had nothing but pain and bumbling inefficiency from them for the last six months.

I contacted Cogent's "premium" help desk last night when I found that I was suddenly no longer able to get to our networks in Australia. The tech had no idea that his own company was in the middle of a huge peering battle with L3. I had to tell them!

    abso-frickin-lutely.

and I'm sick of articles that talk about "ignorant IT staff" being the problem for mac users. mac's aren't rocket science, they talk tcp/ip like anyone else, it's just really not that complicated....any half decent IT guy can get it on the network. that's not the issue though.

the issue as you pointed out is brining in unknown personal pc's and attaching it to a corporate network. That's a security back-door if I ever saw one....

  11. Corporate 802.1x deployment here with Funk Odyssey on Are You Using 802.1X? · · Score: 1

I've deployed 802.1x here in an enterprise setting using Cisco APs and Funk Odyssey. The thing I like about Odyssey is it supports just about every .1x authentication type. We are using a mix of EAP-TTLS and EAP-LEAP and plan to begin testing using EAP-TLS and client side certs soon.

We can also support just about any client nic out there which makes our users happy. I get encryption keys that are unique to each user and change every 9 minutes or so.

I tested several of the commercial VPN solutions prior to going with 802.1x, but in general I found them to be too finicky for our user base, more complicated to administer, and quite expensive to boot...

  12. Re:This Sucks!!! on Cisco to Acquire Linksys · · Score: 1

As others have mentioned already, they don't really compete. No one builds enterprise grade networks using linksys equipment...that would be insane. And home users don't need a cisco access point or switch for their home network that would be an incredible waste of money.
