Woman Tries to Sue South Park
*Menace* writes "So, it seems that a Canadian mother sued South Park because her young son's name is Kenny, and watching the show's Kenny die horribly week after week has given the real-life Kenny some psychological issues to deal with." Fortunately, she
lost, but its a pretty amusing article anyway.
First she didn't sue south park. She complained to a regulatory commision. As far as I can tell this is roughly the same as complaining to the FCC in the US. Second, for all of you saying, "canada is stupid because of this," think about it for a second. What would have happened if this lady lived in the US. It WOULD have been a law suit and she probally would have won. The commision she complained to essentially said, "ma'ma you are an idiot." They didn't take any negative action against the show and said that it, "is an adult cartoon," or that she shouldn't be letting her kid watch it in the first place. I think canada did a much better job dealing with this than the us would have. Yet another reason to move to canada some day.

"...and that makes me a saaad panda." ;)
When the kid grows up, he can sue the mother for letting him watch south park every week.
on a related topic, a school in england is renaming itself from South Park Junior School. Can't imagine why.
Its trivial for a person to use his/her middle name and people would me most understanding. I feel the need to sue that mother for stupidity and bringing it into this world.
Somebody please inform our clueless parent that the mature content warning at the beginning of South Park is for real. Also, why is her son Kenny able to watch a TV show that's on at 10:00pm?
Ok, it's time to get on my soapbox.
I don't understand why this lady chose to let her son watch the show if she believed it to be so violent. She is one of the people of this world that ignore their children and let the television babysit them, then later wonder why their kids are so messed up. If she had watched the show just once she would see the disclaimer in the beginning that the show isn't fit to be viewed by anyone.
I realize that parents aren't always home, so if they want to prevent children from watching these shows they should go out and buy a tv with the new V-Chips and block out unwanted programming. All the information about V-Chips can be found here or a parent could call toll-free at 1-877-2 VCHIP-TV for more information.
She did not sue.
She filed a complaint with the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council. The CBSC is a broadcasting watchdog that most radio and TV stations are "voluntary" members of (note the quotes). The CBSC ruled against her.
Any clod can file a complaint with CBSC. So this no more different than the thousands of idle complaints that are made various governing bodies across North America. People without lives or purpose that have nothing better to do but piss and moan about everything.
The sick part is that the CBSC entertained these complaints. But that's par for the course from them. I work in radio so I know some of the silliness that they've directed at us.
VENI! VIDI! VICI!
Sorry.. had to be said. :)

She complained to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Committee. Like complaining to the FCC, in the U.S., only with intelligent people handling the complaint.

Actually, the Canadian broadcasting folks are like an FCC with fewer lawsuits and more political correctness.
Umm, can you give some example of the political correctness?
I remember a couple of years ago, the great Pete Townsend was interviewed on the CBC (in the early afternoon.) During the interview, he was heard to say the "F-word" several times (along with some other colourful metaphors), and it was broadcast without being censored. (I doubt this would qualify as being "politically correct".)
As an amusing end to the tail, in one of the US towns close to the border (where they can receive our TV signals) there was a huge uproar, and many complaints were lodged at both the FCC and CRTC by US Citizens. Not one complaint from any Canadian was recorded.
I think it's interesting that I can listen to "vulgarity" and watch full frontal nudity on free broadcast television, while American TV regulations forbid the showing of two people in bed together, without some form of clothing or blanket between them.
You notice that this woman went to the CRTC, the Canadian regulatory body for Broadcast communications ... she wanted something to be done about South Park ( restrict its broadcast ? )...
...
If this were the US, you'd have the lady suing the makers for $100 Million for emotional damage
But the Canadian legal system doesn't much care for frivolous lawsuits, so they don't much happen here. Yet another reason for me to Stay In Canada!
The fact that no one understands you doesn't mean you're an artist.
You fiendish nerds! Think about the children!
oh god, won't anyone think about the precious
children anymore? We must ban this horrible
south park menace and TV altogether (apart from
the soap operas of course, oh, and oprah). We
must get the children back into church and stop
teaching them satanic concepts like evolution,
OH JEEZUS GOD! WON'T ANYONE THINK ABOUT THE
CHILDREN?
oh yeah, mae ling mak, petrified and naked too
