  1. Emergency Numbers on Trapped Girls Call For Help On Facebook · · Score: 1

Last year I was in Rio de Janeiro, and an older gent had a heart attack (maybe stroke, or seizure) in front of my friend and I on the street. We were the only ones nearby, so the right thing for me to do was rush to the nearest pay phone (about halfway up the block) and try to dial 9-1-1. Afer the second try, it dawned on me. Different country, different emergency code.

There are millions of more people who did not vote in 2000. Why get mad at 5 of the voters who voted for Nader? Why not look at the 40 or 60 percent of potential voters who did not vote in that election at all??

  4. I fly a lot on Schneier Talks to the Head of TSA · · Score: 1

I fly internationally (O.K. Canada) for business twice a month. I don't mind the processes at customs or security checks at all. Sure, I've been searched roughly 1 out of every 5 times, and my computer opened and booted up 3 times. No prob.

The only thing which I find amusing with security at the airport is the amount of people it takes to X-Ray. Often, I will see 9 to 11 individuals on one X-Ray machine, standing shoulder to shoulder. At least three are 'managing' the others. I find it to be wasteful and unnecessary.

That's my only beef with TSA. This process seems to have a lot of cogs which are really useless. One person reminds us to take off our shoes. One person stacks the dish buses. One person confirms that our pockets are really empty.

Other than this one particularly inefficient step, I do not find TSA or other TSA-related processes to be annoying or burdening.

  5. Bogus on Experts Oppose Classifying Gaming Addiction As Mental Disorder · · Score: 1

Video game addiction is bogus. It's a hobby. I don't play video games any more, but I am really active and like to play outside. I pout when friends do not want to play football or go swimming or whattever. But if they were as into these sports and activities as I am, I would be doing this 4 or 6 hours a day. Or until I am tired.

The thing about video games is that you don't have to WAIT for someone else to join you. You can just log in, and be immersed in an environment of others who do want to play. Or you can play single player games for hours and just 'tune out' much like people 'tune out' the world by reading books upon books upon books. Is bookreading an addiction too, if someone reads 4 or 6 hours a day?

No, it's a hobby. We don't call guitarists addicts for playing their instrument for hours. We don't call people who read for hours addicts for reading. We don't call people who play sports for hours addicts for playing outside. I don't think we should call video game players who play for hours on hours addicts and treat it like it is a 'disorder'

  9. FTA on Russian Journalists Quit Over Censorship · · Score: 3, Interesting

Eight reporters from the Russian News Service said they could not work under new rules that required them not to interview or mention opposition leaders such as Garry Kasparov and to ensure 50% coverage of "positive news". Kinda like how the U.S. main stream media does not mention Dennis Kucinich or Ron Paul.

..When the next terrorist attack hits London. With multiple angled shots and clean video feed of hundreds fleeing imminent destruction, it can be played continuously on television and Internet to instill strong emotions of vengeance and hatred for whoever was behind the bombing. With this, the Government can generate more support for fiendish actions. Look at 9/11. How long did they loop those videos of the airplanes? I think by the 15th loop I wanted to kill who did it with my own hands.

  13. Re:Bout time on Halo 3 To Have 'Mute the Jerk' Button · · Score: 5, Interesting

I look forward to this feature in the new Halo. I used to play with a friend with a black reference in his name. People can say that online, color is indifferent, but it would really pain me when we would play together, and people would insult him racially over the headsets. People keep their mouths closed in person, but online people can criticize based on race in near-complete anonymity (sp). Halo showed me there are a lot of assholes out there, who love to attack race if they get the chance. Hell, they'll attack anything, but I'd always imagine race to be one topic gamers would leave untouched. People can say 'fuck you fag' after the kill, but it's different when you hear the barages of 'fuck you nigger' jarring from your television set. The best solution, I guess, it to get a new handle. Next solution is to block out the intolerable with this feature.
