  1. Wont Happen Unless on Google's Android To Challenge Windows? · · Score: 1

Android wont challenge windows Unless A. Business Apps work a lot more seemlessly with a linux based OS which Android is and B. Games work better on the platform. Only two areas Android will challenge Windows and that would be Mobile Windows and netbook.

Problem with FOSS and trying to promote it... And who we need to promote OSS to... The major problem is that both the Business world and the PC Gaming world Cater to MS Windows... I would guess 90% or higher of the main stream Windows Games are windows based only its probably a higher percentage... Yes there are ways to get emulators to work but even being someone who's worked more with computers than your average gamer its still difficult to get those emulators to work properly.. And on the business side... Companies are using apps that run database apps that run on windows... or other proprietary apps that work on windows... some you might be able to get by with an wine emulator others it just doesnt work at all And if it does work good luck getting support company i work at is looking at new DB software and i made it a point to ask if it would work on a linux box the person told me that i was more than welcome to try but there would be no support if any issues ever arose not very comforting when you work on a mission critical application and when you work with limited budgets and have specific needs also get limited in choices... What people need todo is start promoting OSS to the Game makers and the proprietary apps makers for businesses... In the meantime its always nice to introduce OO.o & firefox to users here and there.. I've converted a few over...

Most companies wont go to fedora, opensuse, ubuntu or your other free downloadable distros they will go to redhat or another vendor and buy the software... Reason being no real support comes with fedora and the other free distros.. Yes the community support is very good but when it comes to businesses and enterprises as wonderful as it being free having 0 support is very risky if a problem should arise its nice to know you can get support... I dont know how the licencing works for redhat but a workstation with std support runs 299 if its another OS provider that adds specific stuff that cost can be higher...which is the same as XP Pro or Even the Vista business is virtually the same price... Now add in your DB will likely have to be rewritten for Linux since its a library im sure it has databases for books and other resources one would assume being found in a library... Even more cost there... Im alittle suprised that it cost so much for only 200pc's but not suprised that end cost of rolling out 1500 would be more expensive than upgrading windows... Im All for free software and linux and don't want to sound like a troll, but when it comes to businesses, governments, and other enterprises I personally don't think that they shouldnt risk their data to a free distros...

It would be a good deal only if they help improve gaming and other features in Linux... I know linux has some gaming but it sucks... It can be very difficult to get mainstream games to work properly or even work at all in linux... And cedega is a work a round that works only part of the time... Also other features too that 1 you might have to buy a commerical version of linux to get out of the box like MP3 or other software.. I know you can download mp3 for linux but the average user will not understand the commands and be discouraged... I know it probably wont happen but if MS were to help in these areas heck even build a suitable software to purchase to play games that actually works on linux im all for the collaboration...

I should be able to install a game and have it execute without a headache... As for the other innovations I know linux offers virtually everything MS has but for the most part its difficult for the average user to setup and install linux... As pricing goes Vista Business is basically same price and current XP Pro so even if companies buy a new machine for each user that still wont be 3000+ dollars to upgrade unless you are buying your users the latest top of the line computers which most companies wont need unless they are a graphics company which should be using apple which does way better for graphics that Windows.. I'm betting you can still goto dell and buy their optiplexes for around 1000 and get windows gig of ram probably the mid ranged core 2 duo or AMD processor and a 17 or 19" flat screen 80+ gig HDD... If you include MS Office maybe 1500 for the system... In any event that would be more than sufficient for most businesses except like i said the ones doing the intensive graphics that require a very high end duel graphics cards and the top of line processor.. Usually these are graphics companies which are usually on Macs..

Reason Commercial OSS is so expensive is because there's not many choices of software that comes with support keyword with... Same goes for tech to solve problems not many certified linux or OSS techs to solve your IT problems and the ones out there charge fortunes because of this fact... Yeah you could buy some of the free linux programs or Os's but you wont get any support and a degress of sanity... with Red Hat and Novell only the 2 OSS vedors that i know of that have certs, licensing, etc.. They go and garuantee software with work with the OS out of the box were as your ubuntu OS you dont know if your DB or apps will work propery yes its free but most businesses wont take the time to stop and work out the bugs and risk even more potential problems if they do something and screw it up they'll wind right back at square 1... Or if you need to make adjustments and take care of other dependancies to make it work somewhat... Downtime in business is money lost

Just like linux... Linux kernel is locked and secure all other programs dont have access to the linux kernel... Allowing 3rd party apps access to the kernel basically allows anyone to have free reign...Most if not all linux users understand that if a user gets a virus it is containted to their account and doesnt ruin the kernel... OS Still works and the most the admin would have todo is delete that bad account..... MS isnt holding a gun to everyones heads and forcing them to run windows... People are complaining that Windows isnt secure even with all the anti-virus companies arlready out there for Windows XP such as Symantec and McAfee which are the microsoft's of the security software world... maybe users are too ignorant to go out and install the antivirus software but i doubt thats the case i think the case is Symantec and McAfee plain suck and Microsoft is attempting to please the Users by getting Vista more secure... Only time will tell on that objective on how secure vista is and how secure the vista kernel is... I'll still suggest users run linux but applaud MS for attempting to fix their security issues...

I have heard that it might be because im using a Nvidia Graphics card but I think its rediculous that the graphics card is to blame... I still have some patients level and try to search out answers but a lot of others probably wouldn't I've started to play around with BSD maybe i will be more successful with this distro else i'll try another until i can find one that'll i can use wine and cedega to run my fav games

Also support for MP3's without having to figure out how and where to download the files and install them properly... but they have gotten better with MP3 support I know linspire comes with it but you have to pay and im not sure about suse, but for the average Joe they aren't going to take time to find the documentation to get mp3... Outside those two issues then linux would be perfect for the desktop... Obviously they aren't targeting Apple OS's to the same scurienty(sorry been a long day cant spell) Apple OS is more tightly integrated than MS... And im sure Apple has their own Security suite built into Apple..
