  1. Re:Even Apple would have been better on Professor Sells Lectures Online · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think that $2.50 is a fair price for a lecture. Lets be realistic... most of the time that you miss class it is your own choice (or worse, your failure) to miss it. In that, the professor doesn't owe anybody his free time. Something like this does take time and effort beyond what is normally expected. Those times when I missed class in college I would have gladly paid $2.50 if it was something that I wanted to hear.

So... sure, make it a podcast. But keep the price at $2.50 and make all the profit himself. Students don't need any more excuse to be lazy, a good deal of them perfected the skill long ago.

Sure we mistrust the internet. Why wouldn't we? Most of us have had broadband providers with poor service, or just good old fashioned blips in our ability to connect. It is hard enough as is to get what we need done on the local services we run on our computers today... running them from the internet when there are so many potential problems is sure to be a bit scary.

I know that in many ways it is the future to move applications to the net. One that I respect a ton is salesforce.com, thats an amazing product.

But still, I think that most people are skeptical, like myself, about the viability of it currently.

Some things we do on our computers are extremely important... and the thought of adding in another variable can be disturbing. It will be interesting to see how these things are deployed and how succesful they are in the near future.

Hrmmm, even my blog has crashed on me a time or two.

I would be very disappointed if the government allowed actions that had a negative impact on internet video.

My wife is from Sweden and she uses it to communicate with her parents regularily. Without that we'd be limited in our ability to spend quality time with them... even a continent apart. I know there are tons of people just like us that find internet video to be incredibly important in their lives.

I certainly support the government in doing what it can in dealing with child pornography and other things along those lines... but trying to apply a tax or stifle innovation in regards to technological advance would have alot of societal negatives.

It really depends on the situation Matthew. I do believe that content providers should make their content more accessible to their subscribers. On the other hand, I don't think it would be right to download music you don't have (unless the author has said that was fine), or a movie, etc. As far as content that comes from television, the lines in that have definitely become more blurred over time. Back in the day, you could tape something on your VCR. Now you can tape and store things easily with DVR and its really fine to do so. It is certainly borderline whether it is okay to download stuff from the internet and disperse it amongst your friends. I have preferred to stay away from that dilemna by just not doing it at all. If it were okay for instance to download a video and show it to your friends, then would you also think it is okay to lend software that you own to your friends? If you can lend it to your friends, what kind of step would it take to then put it up on the internet and do people a favor by allowing them to have access to it? Rights are an important part of society (well, in most countries), and ownership is an important part of that. I really don't have a solid answer to where exactly to draw the line in what is ethical or not. I just try and make it easier on myself by stearing clear from those things which are borderline.

I hope Apple didn't spend too much time and effort on that, being that it only took a few hours for people to undo it. DRM is a pain. I don't particularily believe in downloading content I haven't paid for... but if I own something I should not be limited in how I want to use it. Kind of reminds me of Sony's shady DRM system on some of their CDs that you have to install their spyware to be able to use. And to think I'd purchased it and I still had all those restrictions on what I could do with it. I think that media companies don't seem to want to do themselves any favors with fans in all of this. At least it would appear so.

All the technological interference in Minority Report didn't look so good to tell you the truth. On one hand I do appreciate the ability that this would have on companies being able to further tailor their advertisements to individuals. Being that it is still not specifically tailored to each person a breach of privacy seems less of an issue. Realistically, it would be nice to get away from Monistat or herpes ads. If I have to see ads placed around I would just as soon they were tailored to something that would have a higher chance of being interesting to me. I guess we'll have to see where this goes, I really doubt it will show its face anytime too soon. I am assuming that this would be a totally passive system so that it wouldn't be trying to drain my Bluetooth battery. If I got tired of the ads I could always put the bluetooth on standby.

I agree, it is an interesting use of statistics. As some others have pointed out, it is flawed in a few ways, but overall its a neat idea. I have a 6 megapixel Canon Powershot SD630 and it works great for me. The only downside I have heard from some users is that it gets rid of the traditional viewfinder all together and just goes with an LCD. However, I was just fine with getting rid of that. The only down side I found on it is that the hard cover they put over the LCD is reflective when you're trying to show somebody a pic on a videocamera, even if the room is dark. Of course, the easy answer to that is just to e-mail that family the pics instead of doing a show and tell. Either way, interesting list. For one it shows the popularity of certain cameras.. but it also shows to a degree the demographics of the people that are a part of Flickr. I haven't spent much time on it, perhaps I'll have to go represent the SD630 a bit more. btw, the pics on my blog have been edited and have a reduced quality to make them web friendly.

Regardless, we as consumers are definitely the winners in all of this. Now if only we could get this much talent and competition in everything else. I have to admit though, it was kind of sad to see the Crusoe chip fail as completely as it did. It would have been fun to add a third party to the competition.
