I suspect that was because of the recent patch to windows that came out just a few days ago. Hmmm...when was the last time I needed to update the linux server or apache for security reasons? Hmmm...oh well, my memory's not that good, anymore.
I think this software shouldn't be used to make irate people's call times shorter, it should be used to determine when a menu system needs to be redesigned. The more angry a person gets, the more likely the menu sucks. I've had some perfectly good phone systems deal with me. If we could just make them better, less people will be irate.
There have been some good replies already, but I'll throw another one out there.
When dealing with warfare, no matter how "precision" or "surgical" your attack is, it's still not the same scale as the repair of sensitive optical and electronic equipment. If you shoot something 5cm to the left of your target, you're probably still going to hit your target. If you have a 5 mm imperfection in a lens, you're pathetic.:-)
I had one of those! Of course, my grandfather had gotten it in a "grab bag" of cheap crap. I wore it until the battery wore out. I only knew it wore out because nothing happened when I pushed the button.
It wasn't too long after 1976 (1980 or 1981) and it was already relatively worthless.
And this is almost certainly why the driver is still in charge of the brake. If it's your job to brake, it's still your job to watch out for hitting something. Then, it's no different than if you were operating the steering wheel, too.
I know this is a bit late, but I thought I'd chime in. I wouldn't admit that you already know that they're vulnerable. I'd first mention that you see that they use a wireless network and ask them who set up their network and if they know how secure it is. You don't even have to lie; you can say that you are concerned about their security and your privacy (which, IIRC, they are mandated to protect).
If they blow you off, then I'd actually contact an agency that might care about the privacy laws and just ask them to check on this office's security, since you're concerned and their answers didn't make you very comfortable.
If they don't blow you off and either refer you to the people who set it up or are knowledgable themselves, you can offer to do a cursory security audit, "the kind that any malicious hacker might do while driving by." If you get permission, get it in writing.:-) Then, go for it and let them know the results.
Seems to me that it's always best to ask and appear ignorant until they tell you the answer or they ask you to find the answer for them.
Seems to me that if this was actually signifigant progress, they'd be telling us all this.
Not at all. I think the problem is there are relatively few people who would know or care about those specs. Most people want to know something to which they can relate, like hours of use. You and I know that it's a relatively useless measure, but the general population knows of no other way.
It's the same reason we get sizes measured in "Libraries of Congress." Nebulous and useless, but people at least think they can relate to it.:-)
I used it to communicate with a client who is deaf on a project that lasted about a year and a half. Very convenient. Granted, it might not have been that secure, but we weren't chatting about anything sensitive. (We were designing some custom interfaces.)
I know you've been catching a lot of shit from people, but I thought it was a refeshing comment. Some people don't really have the time or the money to worry about crap.
And though I'm fortunate enough to still have my job, I have plenty of friends who either only recently found jobs or who STILL can't find jobs.
For all the people who think that just anyone can go get a McJob, think again. Being overqualified might just be worse than being underqualified--if you're underqualified, you can move up. A friend who was a project manager contractor for Sun couldn't get a job as a DELIVERY PERSON--because he was overqualified.
True, there is a fair bit of apathy that has to be overcome, but let's not forget about inflation.:-) Assuming an annual inflation rate of just 2.5% (very low, I suspect it might have even been twice that, on average), 30 years of inflation doubles the amount of money required to have the same buying power as in 1973.
I agree except for one point: I don't know that it's all NASA's fault, necesarily. Perhaps what we need is for congress to get a kick in the butt and start funding space endevors. I suspect that NASA is more than willing to do stuff, but when they see less and less money, there's only so much they can do. (And yes, I suspect they waste a lot; I'm sure they're not blameless.)
Though I think I agree with you that NC provided nothing for you (with the possible exception of road maintenance for the delivery company), that's just not how it works, right now. Technically, sales tax or value added tax, depending on where you are, is collected because of where the product will be used. Now, whether that's right, I won't argue.
But that is why you can get reimbursed for this tax when you leave a country you've been visiting. When I went to England, if we'd had all our receipts in order, we could have gotten all of our VAT refunded to us, since we weren't going to be using the products in that country. Didn't matter where the transaction took place.
Not all jobs are "lost" to OSS. I maintain a perl module. I do so on the clock. It was a "product" that my company needed, but we needed some additional functionality. The original maintainer was unable to continue, so he turned it over to me. I get to work on an open source project, other people benefit from the work I do (well, they will once I complete testing and release it), and I get paid. What could be better?
I think it was actually an attempt to get everything in one place. Since careful moderation and link checking was requested, I suggest that they know that the answer is not out now, but that when it is, it will likely be posted here. Mod them up. There will also be a ton of wild speculation. Do not mod them up lightly.

Quite true! The more correct thing would have been to say "Remember, the LOTR has all of that in the original story." ;-)

Was it a bus ticket? ;-)
Actually, my first thought was that they wanted to use a General Manager and that the fish were going to be downsized by some Pointy Haired Boss.
Seems to me that if this was actually signifigant progress, they'd be telling us all this.

It does have Roblimo, though...that's close, isn't it? ;-)

We will not tolerate a DMCA gap!

No, no, no. For the underwear gnomes, step 2 is "Ebay". ;-)
Whether this is better or worse than SCO remains to be seen.
Hey! Maybe the Meaty Cheesy Boys are available!
Oh, don't worry. That box set will come out in a few years. He just has to make sure that the people who really want one have to buy the other, first.
So why might this not be considered legal by an enlightened society?
In what country are you living? Anymore, there aren't too many enlightened societies.
...they were just equiped with Nokia batteries. *whew*

After having the misfortune of picking up a rental car there, I will NEVER have to be reminded of that again...
