  1. Re:Hey, the TSA does screw all with private planes on TSA To Allow Laptops In Approved Bags · · Score: 2, Interesting

I can't speak for FedEx, but UPS security procedures are MUCH more stringent then mandated by the TSA.

FedEx is very strict with their guidelines for package contents. They pull out the rulebook for anything, especially International, and turn you away if they think it's hazardous or fails customs guidelines.
The U.S.P.S. on the other hand will take anything you give them, no questions about the contents (I guess they assume you aren't shipping chemicals or that the scanners will catch everything), and ship it off as long as it's not too large (I forget the sizing criteria).
I ran into this when trying to ship gifts for X-Mas over to my wife's family in Russia. Fedex-"Can't send because Russia isn't allowing toys from America because they are probably from China." USPS-"Fill out this form and give us ~$75."

This isn't the town that had to be condemned because the coal underground was ignited?

    That would be Centralia, Pennsylvania

Ditto, I'm 37 and took two COBOL classes at my university to get my CIS degree. Count me out on the minimum wage to repair the issue though!

Bat droppings played a large part in American history during the Civil War and World War I. I know for sure that there were many Saltpeter mines setup in Kentucky Mammoth Caves.

I would add to this, what about networks that restrict Internet access? Hospital workstations for digital imaging are considered diagnostic devices and considered medical devices. Banks would be another example. The obvious alternative would be to use a *Nix platform and go with software vendors who build such applications, but the point is that Microsoft will lose customers in such scenarios. I doubt they will go the path of making a product that is so prohibited to some of their large business markets.

I have both keyboard and mouse for my home theater. Both work great from upstairs about 30 feet away and through walls. Highly recommended for this type of application.

  7. USB Turntable on Analog Revival Means Vinyl Will Outlive CD · · Score: 2, Interesting

I got this great usb turntable for my birthday made by Ion Audio (http://www.ion-audio.com/ittusb.php). Records my records down with great quality even with regular windows recorder. What I haven't found is a way to just listen to the records without recording it first. That is, on my computer...I can hook it into a receiver and enjoy the vinyl. ;-)
