If you put value on something of as nearly free as the act of duplicating a lump of bits from a master copy to a piece of plastic...

You are confusing R&D/Production costs with marginal production costs. Yes, of course it's cheap to produce copies. That doesn't mean movies or songs appear out of thin air. Judging by your post, you're not an idiot, so you know that. You are doing mental gymnastics to support your hypothesis. At least be honest with yourself. If everyone copies, how will new material be produced with the budgets and quality we're used to experiencing today?

You have something that other people do not, you give some of it to other people without asking for anything in return. You may need a dictionary.

Ok, yes. I concede that in the very strictest, pedantic definition of the word you are indeed correct. Yet, there is a certain (deserved) connotation to altruism. Conveniently providing a nearly free resource does not live up to the conversational connotation the word "altruism" usually enjoys. But if you want to split hairs, fine. You win.

You want to know what's funny? Downloading a copy isn't illegal. [snip] The RIAA know this, better than you do apparently, since all their suits have been "making available" lawsuits (ie. uploading).

You are right, I didn't know this. Thanks

If you put value on something as nearly free as CPU cycles and bandwidth, how can you state that something which took many people time to create (movies, songs, etc) is ok to forcibly give away for free, against the wishes of the creators? That is the abso-fuckin-lute height of hypocrisy if you ask me.

Jesus, I at least have some respect for those that say, "yeah, I'm stealing it. But fuck those guys. I'm broke". Altruistic? - give me a break.

That is true if done poorly, but I work with a team from India my company has hired. As much as I'd like to think "these guys aren't as good are 'our' guys" the fact is that they are as good.

In fact, they're better: they can code as well as we can, they are fairly knowledgeable about creative solutions to new problems (onshore probably still has a *small* advantage there - for now), and they're willing to work their ass off. Their PCs don't even have internet access. They sit. They code. They leave.

Programming is becoming commoditized. For those that might counter "well, you're just crappy at your job". No, I'm not. I'm actually quite good. I'm just looking at this impartially. Don't shoot the messenger, I'm not happy about it either. But it is truth. Pretending it's not will get you no where.

But even then the definition doesn't stick so well.

There is an RFC out there (I forget the number off the top of my head) which limits redirects to five. IE6 went above spec and allowed ... 20... I think. IE8 has shortened to allow 10 redirects. FF and Chrome allow the same or less. There is a limit on redirects by RFC, but many websites don't follow the rule and many browsers are forced to compensate because of this.

Ironically, I was just recently accessing a gmail based email system with an Android phone and suddenly I get the message "too many redirects". So now there's no way my google phone can access my google mail. -1 for that one Google.

Maybe it's just me, but I HATE micromanaging battles, or micro-managing anything for that matter. I'm the Emperor / President / King so I like deciding the blend of units to produce, general city enhancements to pursue, when and where to build new cities, diplomacy, etc. Managing the tactical battle plans sound like a pain in the ass.

I don't play the amount of strategy games I used to but Alpha-Centauri is still far and away the best game I've ever played that allowed this "macro" level control over things.
