  1. Already Happening! on Protect Your Cell Phone From Spam · · Score: 1

To my utter surprise, disgust, and latter irritation I found that I had recived a "page" on my cell phone, thinking it was someone important I opened it, only to fid it was spam! I was disgusted to say the least, but with the advent of the wireless communications from Sprint (my provider), Nextel, Verizon, etc. they all offer paging capabilites that you can e-mail, and the e-mail gets forwareded to the phone. It's only a matter of time before the spammers figure out that they can just do mass "guessing" against those networks and set everyone's cell phone off with spam. To say the least this is NOT A good thing, and I'm honestly debating alternatives, any ideas?

Hadn't it already become obvious Intel had made a mistake and was going to drop Rambus anyway? I mean the first step in the grave for Rambus was Intel doing ANYTHING with DDR, once they saw DDR was better it was over. Then Rambus shooting themselves in the foot (A LA we want to sue everyone because we are anal retentive!) I thought this was the consensus about 6 months ago. But for once (since the last of the socket 7 CPU's) GOOD FOR INTEL! At least they are willing to admit a mistake and change it..... maybe theres hope for them yet!...... naw nevermind AMD is better anyway.

I would like to re-itterate what was stated in the article: show me the numbers. I mean 23 percent just tossed out there is as it stands, an arbitrary number. So for instance I could claim that 98% of the record industry has their heads stuck in the sand. Or that 60% of the population afters listening to windows startup sound a hundred million times because they have to re-boot so often slowly begins to think (subliminal messages in the .wav file maybe?) that Microsoft is a good thing. Without numbers to back these up they are merely random stuff being pulled out of my butt.

And Again, welcome to corporate America, if I can find a way to make a bigger, faster, better buck then the people already making it, someday I will own the people already making it. Tough cookies about who was there first.

As for my thoughts on the issue directly and against Sun, if linux runs on a mainframe people will find the problems that exsist for linux on the platform and begin striding towards correcting those, the same way with any problem (I'll take the StrongARM processor that my linux iPAQ runs) it's not perfect but it's being worked on and thats why linux keeps going because people go "hey lets try and make this work on here because it would make job X easier" and they do it..... now if only I could re-program my toaster.

Let me ask this, if there was a way to rate an add (I.E. how many times it was viewed) wouldn't this be a WONDERFUL way to figure out how to effectivley track and develope ads that would sell a product? I mean honestly this was an ideal situation for researching that type of phenominon, WHICH ad's do people like? and it's a known phenomenon that if you like an ad you are more likely to like the product (and vice versa). I would have thought the advertising adgencies would have helped out with this site just for the population / viewing data ALONE! But obviously this is not true, but if they won't fund something like this how WOULD you fund it, subscriptions? I honestly don't think I would min being charged on a per-download basis of an ad but... then again ::shrugs::

As nice as an optical bus on my m-board would be wouldn't there be a rather large slow down due to the encoding / decoding of the optical stream? If so wouldn't that eliminate any possible advantage it would have over my current wire based system? I mean wouldn't you have to have tranciever at every point on the optical bus and then have a bunch of sensors and electronics to decode the signal?

HOWEVER if it doesn't, does this mean that there will be random strips on my m-board that will glow from fiberoptic cables passing data back and forth.... I might have to build a clear case if something like that happens!

But it's wonderful to see this on slashdot. But yes, at this point the Baha'i stand point is going to be one of shock and dismay at the loss of life, LOTS of praying for them and their families (well the dead don't really need our help right now they are in better hands then what we can give them) but their families will be needing any kind of support that can be found. If any of the communities in the NY area need help with anything please give a shout out I know I for one am willing to do what I can. Our prayers are with them

to the families and the loved ones who were unfortunatley cought in this atrocious cross fire. The loss of life in this scale is at VERY LEAST saddening and dis-heartening and I wish them the best because they are TRUELY going to need it.

However as I was talking with a collegue of mine over lunch today we were amazed that something like this hadn't happened earlier, and shocked that the papers (At least around here) were claiming that this took some genious tactician to pull off, when in reality this was a brute force effort but a small group of people and it just happened to work out for them for the most part. I mean this was in one of Tom Clancy's books (can't remember exactly which one) quite a while ago and I'm surprised no one has tried to re-create this particular event, although now I guess it has happened.

And I realize my next comment is going to be rather hurtfull but again my collegue and I were discussing just how cool a movie (mpeg clip or what not) of watching the planes collide, or parts of the towers falling would be, and I'm sure I will be bombarded by those tonight.... although the loss of life that was neccisary to create those clips was by far unnecisary and I am sadend by this most tragic event.

BUT, and here's the big point: IF Disney does buy both out (which wouldn't surprise me because of pixar and the success Disney has had with them) Steve Jobs will NOT become Chairman of the MegaHuge Conglomorate that will result. The reason for this is that Disney deals in more areas than just a few films and stuff, they have several theme-parks, hundereds of stores accross America (and a few over seas I hear now) along with a slew of other things Steve Jobs would not be qualified to President over even if that was the only way Disney would get Apple/Pixar. 13. AMD k6-2's and speed improvements? on Wonderful World Of Linux 2.4 - Final Candidate · · Score: 1

Hey someone was telling me at some point that the new kernel (to be 2.4) HAd more specific optimizations for more processors, and have found this to be true. HOWEVER I was told that the K6-2 was more or less 10 or soo smaller RISC based chips that had a scheduler and a decoder for x86 compatibality and that the new kernel now sent the processor RISC like commands instead of x86. I thought this was very cool, consiering that this would be a VAST speed improvement, but now with kernel 2.3.99-pre3 (latest I've found) the speed improvement brought on by checking the "k6-2" option in the kernel is negligable, noticable but not like 10 smaller RISC chips working through things. Was wondering if anyone knew anything about this? Thanks. - J

  14. Lets hear it from the horses Mouth on WordPerfect Office 2000 - Now Shipping · · Score: 1

I'm actually very cruious to hear some comments from some of the BETA testers out there. They are the ones that have been running it, and have a the best feel for WordPerfect Office 2000 for linux. I'm curious how they feel it turned out? Is there really a problem with it running under winelib (if I'm wrong please correct me), and basically do they feel that it is worth it to buy? Don't get me wrong I'm all for companys porting their products to linux but I mean if a program port is crummy to begin with and there is something else better out there (not that I've seen much better StarOffice has a HORRIBLE interface emulating a Windows Desktop, and Abiword isn't even in the same class as desktop publishing suites. I'm sorry a college student needs something like that, something reliable and compatible with everything else) then I'm going to go with the better program despite cost. Soooo if someone that has the beta could write up their feelings on the review and post them (and perhaps a couple screenshots that we can actually see something of the interface from?) I for one would be greatful, and it would help me in a decision to purchase it.

After reading your post I (being the curious idiot I am) attempted this, and it seems that there is a bug in the mp3 playback engine because it would play for about 10 seconds then cut out... but if you move the slider or progress or rewind the song it suddenly comes back for another 10 seconds or so. Despite this problem I'm not worried this is a VAST improvement over the G2 (beta?, alpha?) version I had: it looks good, it's solid and it can stream radio stations from Boston, and play my southpark videos flawlessly and with about the same cpu usage as xmms. Verdict: it's a go with me!!!!!!!
