Umm, Kanji is a Japanese word that means "chinese characters" Chinese people don't understand the word "kanji" because it's a Japanese word.

Japanese was originally a spoken-only language and then the higher ups decided to import a writing system in and, low and behold, the closest system was the Chinese system.

However, depending on the region of Japan, the time of importation, and the original Japanese word that it went with, most kanji have 2 readings if not more (the most I can think of for one off the top of my head is 9). This differs from the original Chinese where the character is read as what it is.

I can't bother to RTFA so I sure as hell can't be bothered to read your link, but I have to say that Chinese characters didn't evolve phonetically, but were actual representations (ie drawings) of the word they represent (more complex ideas being made up of combinations of simpler concepts). But as a speaker of Japanese, not Chinese, I only know the history of the characters in Japan, which is not the country of origin.

At any rate, the AC is right, Chinese characters and Kanji are two unique and different things. Calling them all "kanji" is misleading and inaccurate.

This means that if you buy an Apple CD you can draw on it, shred it, burn it, recycle it, or put it on a pedestal and worship it. However, you have no authority to distribute the content on that disk, the same as you have no authority to distribute the content of the book that you own.

Which was not being debated, what was being debated is if Apple has the right to say you can't mess with the software on the CD for your on personal use. The physical CD is to the software as the cover is to the story of the book. If I want to take my copy of The Da Vinci Code and replace every incidence of "Da Vinci" with "Ninja Turtles", no matter how they kick and scream, the publisher has no legal right of stopping me. That is what Apple is trying to do, stopping me from changing the contents.

But what about the people behind the scenes who make those artists songs better? What about the producers? Fuck the RIAA execs, but I'm starting to wonder about the "Support the artists" = "go to shows" rant. There are some really good producers out there that know how to tweak the song in just the right way to make it better. They don't see any money from concerts or t-shirts, but they sure did a lot for the band. If you don't know what I mean, think of Christopher Walken in the SNL Cowbell sketch.
Yes, some bands do a really good job self-producing, but there are other ones that can't. How would starting artist be able to afford a producer?
