  1. Belgium 2.0 on Google Loses Cache-Copyright Lawsuit in Belgium · · Score: 1

I understand that the problem here is Google indexing content right after it gets his claws on it, and that this ruling is probably nothing but a desperate way to get some money from them.

However, there are many technical ways to not get cached, and robots.txt / meta-tags were just plainly covered in other replies. But if they were so unwilling to have their abstracts in search engine cache, they could truly have used what makes the "success" of those Web 2.0 sites, by using a Javascript trick or any other way of this kind to display text... I don't know yet of web search engines that properly execute JS, and make use of AJAX.

Yes, this would mean also that this case was not only intended to get money from Google but really to protect IP...

I thought about using such a repository for image spams, but the real problem here is to deal with the small differences between each image signature, and that's quite to hard to obtain only from MD5 signatures. When looking around the database FuzzyOCR can create, you won't see much more repetition, which clearly shows that using too "simple" hashes would just not be efficient. When I asked people working on FuzzyOCR they told me that they think a lot about how to find out if an image just looks like another without having to compare the complete file. There's a lot of work to be done for this though ... My idea is that we should start shooting spammers..

  11. Another way of typing ? on Death of the Cell Phone Keypad As We Know It? · · Score: 1

This reminds me of something a student worked on, a project called Glyph for a French university. The idea was to have a keypad with only 7 keys, allowing you to write any letter in only one move. It uses the curves of the letter to identify what you want to type. He led a study on whether it was usable, and has a video of his work on a PDA.

Unfortunately for you (or maybe, fortunately), he only wrote the stuff in French, but it's worth a try. Here is the video : (wmv, yurk) http://www-valoria.univ-ubs.fr/Mohammed.Belatar/do cs/Glyph2PPC_Demo.wmv, and here is the page where he ran his tests: http://www-valoria.univ-ubs.fr/Mohammed.Belatar/ev al1/ (it might not be up for long, since the test is now over)

He wrote a report you can find here (in French, though): http://www-valoria.univ-ubs.fr/Mohammed.Belatar/do cs/RAPPORT_DEA.pdf
