  1. Re:Sierra games! on Vanishing Game Genres · · Score: 1

Problem I have with the "Sierra Classics" is that when the game pops up and asks "What color is ... on page ...?" and the manual is in low res black and white. I don't know how many of them I've tried and had to keep running the program until I guessed right.

  2. "3D" games on Vanishing Game Genres · · Score: 2

Want a reason why every game manufacturer is going for pretty polygons? Castlevania: Symphony of the Night wasn't as big as it should have been because people passed it over because it was 2D and "2D games are old" (yes, every gamer that deserves the title wants to pummel these people). Although I never had the cash to plunk down to buy it, I did play it with my cousin on his PSX and it has the chance to be the last truely great 2D game. Even RPGs have gone 3D, and they're the ones who need it the least!

Last time I fired up a Final Fantasy game was FF5, I've been playing FF5 a lot more (30 hours on the current game) than I ever did FF8 (3 hours total). Why? FF8 is a light show, FF5 is a game.

From the people I've talked to many want a new Metroid, however most say that if the new Metroid is 3D they won't even bother to look at the box. Too many game manufacturers are ruining perfectly good series by turning them into light shows and not concentrating on game play... and they're making money because of it.

  5. For or against? on Abandonware And Copyright Laws · · Score: 1

Even though I am against software piracy, I am for abandonware. Which puts me in a situation where I want it but cannot morally get it. I have an old 386SX25 laptop with 4MB ram that Win3.1 would work great on (for playing DOS games and solitaire). However in the local places I have looked there is not a single vendor with a legal copy for sale, at least not at a reasonable price and/or w/o a "must buy with a new system" clause to support the OEM contract. Currently it sports Win95 that I have a spare license for.

I think ID software has the right idea with Doom, after it's "dead", GPL it. NES ROM sites have the same situation: they want it but can't get it by other means. Where else can you find Defender for the Atari 2600?

Almost noone tries to make a catalog of old software for historical records. Books have libraries, software has lawyers.

It's publicity, Apple shouldn't fight it.

At the risk of getting this marked redundant, I find the difference between glitter and gold is often missed when Joe Bob sees a kid on a computer. I've heard of people being suspended for running a defrag, I've heard of people that were considered good at computers because they can install a desktop theme and run a Diablo crack.

Is this right? No, but if you're not into computers you just don't know any better. Many people see computers as "magical devices" and refuse to attempt to understand how they work and many are even down right terrified of them. To these people doing things quickly is impressive (ie.: running a back orifice and pokeing into someone's computer) while doing something that takes a while makes it seem like you're not sure of what you're doing. (ie.: setting up a linux firewall)

Napster's response: sue the Offspring for trademark infringment.

It's been that way since the Carterfone decision and the breakup of AT&T and ma Bell (even though bells like SBC are buying other bells like Pacific Bell now). The only thing that really needs to be changed to change the whole infrastructure is the lowest levels.

  19. Features on Suck On Skins And UI · · Score: 1

I find that the best programs are ones that can be used stock without any problems by nearly everyone while having a slew of features (like skins) for the advanced user to mess around with until his/her heart is content. Pegasus Mail has a good balence there, albeit isn't an example of a skinable program. Pegasus mail has a cute little wizard that sets up the email client for 90% of the users but has an option set that even MS outlook can't surpass (and this one has useful options). Too many options can ruin a program if noone can get the basic idea of the program without major help, snd in this case your program better be powerful enough to make up for the confusion. I've met people that pass up a program because it doesn't do exactly what he wants to do exactly how he wants to do it (read: didn't want to learn anything new). Now this sounds like it's a problem with the user; well look at all the people on WebTV because a PC is more confusion than they are willing to handle. Large market isn't it?

What I would like to see more of is a link (in raw text form) on the front page of the website that clicking it will lead to a text only version of the site, this kind of a sub-site doesn't neccessarily have to look good as a blind person wouldn't be able to see it anyways but would allow greater accessability and a no frills option for people with slow connections, physical limitations, or software limitations while would make the main site difficult or unusable. If this became a standard practice there'd be less complaints about sites not being "lynx friendly" or people just going to another site because that one is taking too long to load (as text-only loads very quickly even on slow connections). Text only versions should not be overly expensive to produce.
