  1. A cycle? on Up, Up, Down, Down: Part Two · · Score: 1

That which is unknown is feared
That which is feared is avoided
That which is avoided will remain unknown

The unknown will continue to grow and deviate from which was once largely unknown to something completely alien to the group that fails to comprehend it. Thus making fear become panic.

A bit off topic from that part is that people always use historical or cultural trivia to "prove" that kids aren't learning and then blame it on games. For example: "Kids don't even know who Cathrine Hepburn is!" (quote from my reletives). My reply: "Do you know how to burn a CD-r?". General cultural knowledge is often confused with common sense, when this happens age gaps widen at astonishingly fast rates. Often this evolves into culture rifts where even older technical people end up shunning younger non-technical people.

This is the point where gaming is about to be. As gamers grow into maturity and pass it on those who fear it become thought of as hermits and even outsiders of the main group.

Games are not going to go away, they just provide a different way to have enjoyment.

Often videogames are said to "increase aggression" yet no comparison is done to mainstream sports. If someone claimed football didn't "increase aggression" I'd wonder what drugs they're taking.

It's okay to not understand something, so long as you do not fear it, but accept that you do not understand.

  3. M18 vs. N6 on Has Netscape's Browser Become Too Self-Serving? · · Score: 2

I used N6 all day yesterday and I'm using M18 all day today. So far the only difference is M18 loads faster...and with the theme I installed in N6 (I deleted N6 after installing M18), even the form data transfered over and neither overwrote N4.76. If anything the Mozilla project benifits from Netscape because everyone knows Netscape's name yet not many non-geek-like-people know Mozilla. I've been using Netscape since 1.22 and I toyed around with Mozilla for a few milestones. M18 seems like a winner to me. Although there is a few sites that remain broken (hotmail for some reason) it's definately grown to acceptable. The biggest complaint I have with IE versions after 3 is that they tend to include hidden "extras" that just make for a lousy UI. As far as a double standard and MS not spamming, look at the "channel bar" that installs with Win98.

And with an online system there runs into the problem of data integrity, in online FPS games there is "proxy" systems used to aim for someone who is cheating, who's to say that when the stakes are higher a similar thing wouldn't result where people would have thier votes changed without them knowing it?

As much as I am for tech stuff, hardcopy does have it's place.

  5. Radio Commercial on Can the BSA Investigate Your office for Piracy? · · Score: 1

"Pirating software has large penalties, most buisnesses are caught because disgruntled employees and ex-employees report them. Unless you have no disgruntled employees or ex-employees you may find yourself audited"

  10. Why bad ram may not be sold on Patch To Allow Linux To Use Defective DIMMs · · Score: 2

Say a manufacturer has a DIMM with a bad address line, visually it's a normal DIMM. They decided to sell it for a massively low price. Some unscrupulous buyer utilizing "sell and run" tactics buys a bunch and sells them as normal DIMMs. Buyers call the manufacturer complaining that the DIMMs they bought are bad and the retailer no longer exists.

Note: This has happened to me, I bought two hard to find keyboards only to find both had water damage upon arrival (packaging still good) and the retailer disappeared.

  11. Social Security on Feedback: Politics and the Internet Dog · · Score: 3

Social Security has grown to become something that it was never intended to be. When SSNs were created they were not to be used as identification, but only for SS tax purposes. So why does your credit card company and bank want it? Every time I hear a commercial or someone say "You can't retire on social security" I want to reply "That's because that is not intended to be a retirement fund". Social security was born for the sole purpose of ASSISTING people on retirement to help cope with inflation. Many people today don't even think about thier future much less plan for it. Of all the people that I've met recently from my high school days, I think I am the only one remotely planning for retirement.

Privatization of social security would be a good way to make a company fail or get social security reform without being a black mark on a candidate's record (since it was a third party that did the horrible things, not them)

  12. Core voters on Dark Hearts And The Net · · Score: 1

Although there is a large amount of the population that is young, the core is the older people who actually get out of thier house and VOTE. Many of these older people are so technophobic that talk about mapping the human gene seems sacriligious. Hell, my grandma won't even check the propane level in her trailer (it involves reading a small gauge on the tanks) and I've never seen her ever touch a keyboard. Yet these are the people who go to the booth and punch a card.

Unless the younger generations get out and vote, the dinosaurs will continue to rule because we don't adaquatly tell them what we want.

Is there agricultural cultures? By the fact that we still see salad on the menus in many restraunts, I'd have to say there is.
