    If you don't like the service provided, just take your money and go elsewhere. Make a point where it hurts them most: their pocketbooks. They may not care about losing one small customers (banks really make money from business clients) but do not give them your business for below average service.

    My bank does not use any client-side scripting, so as long as I have a client w/ 128-bit encyrption, all is fine. Remember, friends don't let friends use client-side scripting.

    If all else fails, complain to the company that supplys the network services for abusing company. For amazon.com, that is UUNET. However, amazon is a very big company, so UUNET may not want to resolve your problem.

  6. Pine rules! on Web-Based E-mail Isn't Safe From Corporate Eyes · · Score: 2

    My coworkers often make fun on me because I use pine for my personal mail (have to use Netscape for work e-mail because of attachments) and lynx to surf the web. I ssh into a Linux server and use pine, nothing to it. Plus, no one can look over my shoulder and see a web browser. Look, a xterm, it must be work.

    BTW, I know that I should use something better like mutt. I've been using pine for over 6 years and I am just to lazy to relearn.

    Most O'Reilly books are overrated. Their current releases have been hit or miss, and most of the misses are bombs.

    My preference for computer books is anything by Addison Wesley. *All* their books are top-notch and most are classics: Design Patterns by the Gang of Four, Networking series by Stevens, Computer Graphics by Foley et.al., C++ books by Lippman and Sudstroup(sp?).

    O'Reilly does have the edge in terms of timing, especially books on Java API like Servlets, but you can see that they are too quick. O'Reilly made it big with the Perl series, but most of their reputation comes from those old books.

    The black hole is not more then million suns in size, but *MASS*. That is what makes a black hole: an almost infinite mass in a very small (relatively speaking) radius.

    If you are in the Atlanta area, check out the Aware Home Research Initiative.

    The Aware Home project is basically of very big geek house. Not only is most everything in the house connected, but the level of technology is also beyond what is currently on the market. just imagine it: a huge house that is heavily-funded and contains nothing but cool uber-toys.

    Unfortunatly, you can't live there since it is a research project of Georgia Tech. But there are numerous students that [will] live there to do "research". Forget the dorm, give my me cyber-house!

    Embedding ads in MP3s has been discussed before on Slashdot, as well as using trojan MP3s to combat Napster, but this is the first time a major artist has choosen to do so.

    Will this be Napster's future? Will it become just a big online radio that will have nothing but ads and Top 40 cr@p?

    Also, do you think the band or the record company had the most to do with the using of trojan MP3s? I would like to think it was the record company's doing, but it was the band that recorded the ad...

    Ugh, I meant to say VisualAge for Java (not IBM) but I guess you figured that out.

    I don't have the link anymore, but you can download a free trial of VisualAge for Smalltalk somewhere on the IBM site. The Smalltalk section on the IBM website is very well hidden since they are trying hard to push Java.

    Hey, wait a second, who are you calling a wierdo? I hang out on Avenue A and 8th all the time! Just because I have long hair in a pony tail, mutter words like grep and awk, and I have big black eyes from all night coding sessions doesn't mean I am a wierdo. :)

    BTW, if you are on the corner of Avenue A and 8th walk 20 feet to Accidental CDs. That place has all the wierdos. (aka a very cool place).

    First of all, my rant was mainly with Netscape. My secondary, two-line rant against Mozilla is minor.

    Did you read my post? Obviously you did not. You mentioned that I should wait awhile. In case you missed it, I clearly stated that Mozilla has not done a binary release for Irix since January. Go back and read it. There you go, found it? Go for you! How much longer does one have to wait? And yes, I have tried to compile Mozilla, but found numerous problems with the UI code, mainly due to the GTK libraries. Like I said, my rant is against Netscape's defintion of Unix and not Mozilla.

    BTW, it appears that some think my opinions are flamebait. Oh well, I have plenty of karma to post at +1.

    My rant of the day:

    Since when did Linux basically become the only 'nix out there? After clicking on the Unix link for the Netscape PR2 download, the only link present was linux22. Uh, excuse me, but what about other 'nixes? I use SGIs, which means I run IRIX. Netscape is complete and utter crap for IRIX, and I was hoping that this release might set things right (yeah, right). But what was a thinking? I don't run Linux, therefore I don't run Unix. It is understandable that Netscape did not compile forev every type and version out there, but please, only Linux? What about the Sun BSD, HP, AIX users? Sigh, Linux will be the Windows of the 21st century.

    As far as Mozilla goes, the last compile for IRIX was done is January. Says alot about cross-platform code doesn't it?

    Not quite correct. The GVU (Graphics, Visualization and Usability) Center is not a part of the College of Computing, but is actually an inter-disciplinary center made up of groups from the College of Computing, Engineering, Physchology, Architecture, and Arts.

  22. Microsoft Research on GUI Research - Is it Still Being Done? · · Score: 4
    Many of you may not like Microsoft's products or their marketing, but their research group does does some pretty inovative stuff.

    Check out the User Interface group which is part of the numerous research groups at Microsoft.

    There are many universities such as MIT, Georgia Tech, and CMU which do user interface research, but studies (conducted at CMU) have shown that it takes a long time for advances done in universties to reach actual products.

    Pie charts are not used in mainstream applications because someone has patended the idea of pie charts. Unfortunatly, I do not have the information in front of me about the patent holders. Pie charts are extremely efficient; the benefits can be explained by Fitt's Law which states the interaction time is proportional to the distance from the pointer to the object which needs to be clicked. Since all menu options are equidistant, each option can be selected quickly.

    What is the Best GUI Framework?

    Cross-Platform Development Tools?

    Both of those articles did not specifically address cross-platform and GUIs, but many of the responses did.
