You also forgot that developers actually make money on the App store.

But some developers are complaining that, possibly because the Android market started out with exclusively free apps, they are having trouble selling applications.

"Over the weekend I've had a few downloads for my $0.99 app, but I guess I was expecting more," wrote "stonedonkey" in the Android forum. "I'm curious if people just aren't willing to pay, if they are having issues, or there just aren't really that many phones in use?"

"I was wondering same myself," wrote another developer, "Sundog." "I certainly expected a game with a demo in the top ten and an installed base of over 50,000 to get more than a couple of dozen purchases over the weekend."

    [Reference]

For some reason people feel better rooting for an underdog, even if it starts to show the same exact features as what what they hope it will replace such as tethering being banned People only hear what they want to hear.

And Apple is getting lambasted sometimes for the wrong reasons just like MS now. Go figure.

I think it's important to put this in perspective- Apple eventually dropped their lock-in DRM from the iTMS (but not until more than a year after some of their competitors, like Amazon)

That is because they were fighting to keep the $1.00 price for all their songs while the record industry wanted tiered pricing. Apparently Apple lost that negotiation in the end...not that you noticed.

For the other Apple related topics...

    • You know Pre did what they did for the publicity. Palm is not stupid.
    • Developers also know that Apple frequently breaks unofficial APIs. Even Palm devs. This hasn't changed for more than a decade.
    • Do you think it's better for the Pre to have it's compatibility broken earlier, or later when there is a huge install base?
    • Fixing a TIFF exploit that let users jailbreak (and maybe alternatively get a virus from a webpage) is a major hole. What did you expect them to do? Try to write around the jailbreak code to make sure it works?

Yes, Apple is overly controlling and I personally don't own anything Apple. They should have an API for syncing with iTunes etc. But at least try to keep your comments in perspective please. It doesn't help anyone. Thank you.

Religions are quite often warped for people to get it to say what they want it to say. - Fonts do not have an expiration date and go bad
    - Out of the pack of average more high quality fonts will eventually appear

How is that tinfoil hat suiting you?

I generally agree with you. But it was a hack that allowed the Pre to be recognized as an iPod. If there is one thing that Apple is famous for, is breaking software that uses hacks and non-official APIs. Does anyone remember how VPC used tricks to get additional speed back in the old days, but because of it would break with practically every OS update?

The other issue is that this hack may have been exposing a vulnerability, much like the exploits used to jailbreak an iPhone. Nothing like having Tiff images exposing your system to viruses, eh? Not fixing them would be akin to not fixing a car lock that opens without a key because it's easier. And on top of that, if Apple did ignore the Pre and inadvertently breaks the connectivity anyway later on, who do you think consumers are going to blame with false expectations? It's better that they do this up front.

There are two people who generally post on slashdot Apple posts. Apple haters and Apple apple fanboys. My eye for more people in between. I swear, if I see another post saying that iTunes is DRMed, I'm going to start ignoring Apple stories on Slashdot...
