People are worried that Doctors are going to turn into Monro Muffler. You ask them for an oil change, then they tell you that you also need rear coil springs replaced, an alignment, a new alternator and battery, two new cables for my parking brake and a new type of bolt in the front. They will not let you slip by without offering to fix something else regardless of the condition of the vehicle.
From what I have seen of doctors, their judgments can be just as capricious as the mechanics at Monro Muffler. I did not appreciate having my bone cancer misdiagnosed as bursitis until I was literally unable to walk. (For some reason it still strings when they say it is good they caught it early.) Then of course there are the the hypochondriacs who will search out a doctor who will diagnose them with the disease they think they have.
*I have a step brother who is autistic* This kind of test would have been very nice. He is not extremely high functioning, but I believe that is because never had the work done when he was younger. Though with the upbringing of my mother, I was never very sociable either as well as a late talker. I do believe environment can have a dramatic effect on the degree of autism. I get the jibblies whenever I go back to my mother's place.
If your boss (or your mom) asks you to do twice the amount of work, for the same wage (allowance), but you can prioritize so that you can put some tasks off till the weekend in order to do the rush jobs now, would you think that was fair? More work, less downtime, same pay?
Isn't this prioritizing already done by the speed tiers that are currently sold? Speed tiering is made exactly so you over-limit after about 4-5 days of heavy usage. If they refactored it so you only go over limit after a few weeks of heavy usage, it would have a huge impact. This is done by throttling. It also helps protect the people who don't want to be charged $10 a GiB over.
The telephone companies only offer plans that help them charge over-use fees. I don't have much love for them. I'm surprised they didn't do the same for dialup.
I don't trust ISPs. They will generally always place the over-limit to be somewhere around 3-5 days if you are downloading constantly, so it's like a trap. I have always wanted a plan with a slower speed, but no trap... and if they offered plans like that this issue nowadays would be moot. So much for setting up an always-running webcam etc.
Make something innovative enough, Apple will co-opt it (cut-paste, tethering) and forget what they said previously about it and then delete your app from the store.
You mind telling me what exactly Apple has forgotten that they said? It will make it easier for people who don't pay that much attention to the iPhone and I am not exactly sure what to google to check and get irate about. Apple is a corporation, and with all corporations their PR departments love to forget things.
On a side note, are cut-paste and tethering really the best examples for innovative? You have to be able to come up with better examples of innovative than that. Copying features from other cell phones is not innovative even if you are a 3rd party. I would dare say that the devs of apps that do those two things were worried about "when" they would be implemented in iPhone OS, and not "if". There was enough complaints from consumers that it was a matter of time for those features..
I wish more people would complain about the Nintendo Wiiware store, but meh. It has a lot of similar problems to the App Store from what I can tell.
Ha ha. I was just joking and never have used VB myself. QBasic still causes me nightmares though. I can program in C,PHP,Java, Javascript, bit of assembly, perl, python, etc etc. But pulling out my first book for my first failed language from 12 years ago (QBasic for Dummies) I still don't have a damn clue what any of it does. It's enough to scare me away from even trying VB.
I agree with your attitude, but all of the companies that made product went out of business because people weren't buying them or had to start using foreign labor. I think the consumer is just at fault for this one. There is a reason why the Japanese buy so much Japanese made stuff.
My proposal is the country outlaws the images (possibly they already did) that their country seems to find offensive and just block the sites instead allowing this intra-country turmoil. This is exactly what the US and China do. Yes, the US blocks sites it finds objectionable. They tend to be the kind that Americans would make death threats about.
The US has it's own history with death threats in history. Some of the most memorable has been against African Americans. I'm pretty sure there would be all kinds of death threats from Americans if the right images and text were posted one of the main hubs of the internet like the Google homepage.
I haven't used iTunes in ages. But if I remember correctly, for me it turned from a great interface to a horrible one when they started trying to turn it into a media center instead of a simple music player. Too much GUI in one program for random things in an Applications miss-appropriately named. They as might as well as called it "iPod Center" instead of iTunes. It simply does way too much. It reminds me of a Windows approach to a problem. Yup, I said it Apple!...And now I am in Linux land.
People don't want all of the content that is on it. It's not just a group of techies, but people from all walks of life. If they thing that images of Muhammad are as bad a child porn, who is to stop them from blocking it? This isn't the old Internet. We aren't living in the wild west anymore. Not everyone's sense of ethics line up.
tell him that it is his only game system until he moves out. Make sure to print out at least 50 pages of documentation and tutorials for creating games. Things should become interesting:D
I'm going to sound like as ass, but I sometimes wonder if a lot of people never get a tastes nowadays because they eat a very small variety of foods is the US. Sugar drinks, fast food, pizza. Beer is an aquired taste, but you will see a lot more people actually drink it than say, coffee without sugar.
Over the years I have quired a taste for onions, mayonnaise (not a lot of it though), miso soup, pickled food, and various hard to eat Japanese foods. After all that pain to enjoy these things, I have a horrible habit of looking down on people who will turn down something new by just how it looks or initial tastes.
Problem is, I don't think that Mayonnaise or potato chips in themselves are unhealthy. It is how much people over eat them. If science managed to take the fat out of everything, everyone would be dead.
I sometimes thing a lot of people miss out on the different tastes is life. I wouldn't want my fatty hamburger every day, but it is one taste to experience. I don't want everything to be sweet either. You haven't experienced coffee if you're doing your best to hide the bitter taste with sweeteners and flavors. And no, I don't want cheese on absolutely _everything_. Sometimes I like to experience the taste of the spinach that is under that there cheese as it's really delicious when it's fresh.
I really wonder if society is slowly pushing itself to that people can only eat hamburgers to get their nutrients because people are afraid to stretch their taste palettes..
Ha ha. No I am not. I did live in Canada for a while.
One thing I have learned over time is that that the mods just don't have that much meaning and can sometimes impede on an interesting conversation.
Marking posts as overrated has become the new -1 "I don't agree".
Modders tend not to read the modding guidelines or at least choose to ignore them.
People who disagree but can't state their feelings in a reply will just mod a post "troll", basically mooting what could be an interesting conversation and information exchange.
Try starting off a post with a rhetorical question that flares up feelings. Even if you hold the common view on the question and/or you answer it yourself, people will ignore everything after the first sentence. You will get at least 5 people who will re-answer your question which you answered yourself with the same exact answer.
People don't know a post is funny until someone mods it funny. Only then will other mods mod it funny.
In the end, everything on slashdot is fickle. You can't take it too seriously.:-p
How does this effect people who already bought the game? Does Google disable the game on the phones and people get a refund? Does Google pay the fees to the Tetris company and leave the installations? So many details are left untouched.
That is more a sexual confusion amongst Americans, not Westerners. Europe has had breasts on TV since forever.
America is a prude nation is that regard. Just adds to the gasp factor for them. I was just using it as another general bullet but it wasn't the basis of my argument. Oddly enough, modern Japanese television shows shy away form it much more than they used to.
I wonder if slashdotter's vision of Asians are only that of super-models who have had their noses broken to reshape them and breast implants? (I don't mean you specifically Rakshasa Taisab.) That is what the prostitutes did to get the interest of the westerner around the army bases. It's a shame though because of the very false image it creates.
Agh. I hate going this far off topic, but ce la vie.
Have you ever talked with a Japanese person about whaling? Or perhaps and older Japanese person? They are very interesting because they talk of whale meat more or less being the Japanese equivalent of "beef" for Americans. They used it as food in everything because of it's cheapness.
I never saw a western history book blame the Japanese for whaling for oil and driving them to extinction. It was always the Europeans. Now could you imagine if the Japanese used to only killed Cows to get their blubber for oil, then told the US they couldn't eat beef anymore?
We have nations that basically have no need of the ocean telling nations that survive because of the ocean what to do.
*sigh* The whaling debate is much more interesting if you actually talk to the people who you are admonishing.
Westerners and Asians are so different. When the US military base was originally built, the soldiers didn't feel like banging the prostitutes because they looked like kids. On top of that you have the fact that Asian men and women look more alike than Western men and women, then there is testicle porn, how breasts used to sometimes be shown on public TV, New-halves and the gender guessing games, gender-bender cartoons, and a culture that generally gratifies women who press up like high school children. Everything is just a mess.
Given Japanese culture and their craziness, it would be interesting if when a bunch of no-nonsense laws are put in place the suicide rate suddenly takes a small spike for various reasons.
Japan does something like this too. The last time I went there I found out my prepaid didn't work and I was trying to get in touch with my most family but I was running out of coins. Something like 50 cents to 75 cents a minute on a pay phone. Since I have an artificial leg, I didn't appreciate the running around it made me do after a a ridiculously long flight from New York. The other reason I had it is because they worry about me if I ever get in a bind. But there was no way for me to get a new one until I met up with them because I can't get a cell phone personally because I don't own an apartment or anything.
Thank you government for not allowing me to get a prepaid right when I needed it and the original reason I got one to begin with. Thank you cell phone companies for phasing out 2G while I was out of Japan for a year and a half so I couldn't get any messages. Sometimes it just feels like people are shitting on you.
Why are paragraph tags now not working on slashdot?
Today on Mac Rumors they posted a story saying that Steve Ballmer will be at the next WWDC keynote with Jobs showing "The new version of Visual Studio will reportedly allow developers to write native applications for the iPhone, iPad and Mac OS."
Yeah, I have been staring at a lot of these posts and have been thinking roughly the same thing. I am not a KDE user, but I am sympathetic to there having to be breakages every once in a while to stop atrophy. Windows has it. Mac OS has it. Gnome has it. KDE has it.
The irony? Microsoft is big because it is a computer company. Apple grew this big because of all their non-computer stuff. Has Macintosh market share actually grown any more in the last few years? Does Apple even really care if it grows anymore?
You need a car analogy.

Sir, it's unfortunate, but you've just been diagnosed as having a anger complex. You can get your medication on the way out from the hospital. :)

ARGH! Stop artificially inflating VB's results by using VB's name twice in a post!

music to my ears. Finally I will be able to listen to midis without a plugin.
