  1. A step up for laser pointers on Battlefield Lasers · · Score: 1

Who'd have thought laser pointers would come so far? :)

"...pocket laser pointer is going to bridge the gap between the Persian Gulf War and Star Wars."

Do you think they come with different tips like regular laser pointers do?

I think their idea has great potential, but like they said, this is just their baby, the first version. Its got a way to go before its cost effective, practical, etc.

  2. Make it Optional on Getting Introverts to Unwind at Work X-Mas Party? · · Score: 2, Insightful

That will save you a lot of trouble and cut down on your planning. Let the true introverts go home and do their own thing.

If that's not an option, I strongly second the idea below that social games that are intended to force people to cooperate or interact should be avoided at all costs - especially ones where you are forced to make animal sounds. I liked that when I was about 10, but am not comfortable with that now and doubt many others are either.

Actually, forced participation in anything, even a gift exchange, is wrong. That should be optional too. Just let people do their own thing.

You're right on. It's painfully evident when I see letters to the editor complaining that neighbors don't fly flags at their homes or that the janitor at the elementary school doesn't take down the flag in a ceremonial manner at night.

People are choosing to show their patriotism through their consumerism. The person with the most flag paraphanelia wins, and those that fight for our freedoms are labeled as anti-government for their failure to all-out support everything the government does.

I work for a college who issues laptops to each student that is admitted (about 650). This year we started giving each student an IBM memory key along with the laptop. The biggest problems we've had are that since they are small they are easily lost and easy to break. Of course, it could just be that we have some irresponsible students.

  5. My solution for dealing with NSI on What to do when your registrar (NSI) ignores you? · · Score: 1

I went round and round with NSI for weeks. I couldn't transfer a domain to a new account for all the usual reasons, and creating mock letterhead, getting the owners signature, etc. didn't help. They basically ignored me. Finally I mentioned something to my new host and found out that they had an inside guy at NetSol that could get things through for me. I faxed stuff to him directly and it was done within two days.

Check with your hosting company. They may be able to help. A hosting company has more power of persuasion than an individual user.

Now I use Dotster. Great prices, easy interface, good managment tools. I know a few people on here have had complaints but I don't know anyone who has.

As for boycotting NSI, I think that's a great idea! I already do that and as I pick up new clients I get them to switch too. Its easy to explain all the evils of a company when their faults are so many.

  7. It all depends on the coworkers on Friendships in the IT Workplace? · · Score: 1

My opinion is that people who share similar interests and similar job duties will usually get along at work. Personalities of various coworkers will determine whether or not this translates into friendships after work. Some people just don't want to socialize, especially with people from work! They think of work as something that you do during the day, and leave it at that.

At my previous job I had coworkers who were all near my age, had similar interests, and were easy to get along with. We were all in our 20's and liked computers, games, etc. so had something to talk about. We went out after work to drink and play pool on occasion, though certainly not every day or even every week. A more common occurence is that we would set aside a short period of time in the late afternoon to play Quake or Nerf Arena (sic) with each other over the LAN. We were all either designers or developers, or both and most were pretty sociable.

At my job now, my coworkers are from 30-60 and all have families, kids, even grandkids. They talk about things such as home decorating, problems with the kids, etc. We don't get together after work, and I even feel somewhat uncomfortable when we are forced to do lunches together. We do know details about each other's lives, like spouse names, kid names, etc. but that's about it. Of course, now I am the only one whose job is coding or even computer related. For some reason, they decided that my job should be part of communications and marketing rather than IT. Even if our jobs were all computer related, I just don't think that the personalities would click together like they did at my last job.

  8. Ummm.... on XBox Released · · Score: 1

This article was supposed to be about the X Box? It was supposed to be a review?

I'd say 1/6 of it was X-Box related and it certainly wasn't a review because the so called reviewer hadn't played any of the games! It was also primarily speculation and time spent talking about games that are coming up in comparison to other games coming up for other types of consoles. It should have been accurately labeled as a discussion of upcoming consoles and their games.

  9. Re:A little early to judge? on XBox Released · · Score: 1

And as their popup ads drive on into oblivion, I get charged a penny for each and rack up a 50 cent bill just for typing in a wrong address. Lucky me!!

I just don't see how this can be controlled. The wide scale implementation it would take is an incredible task.

A commercial pilot on CNN said something similar to the post above. Loss of engines, as in it physically falls out, are something the pilots regularly train for.

And he noted that most likely if the engine managed to damage the hydraulics system in some way, be it explosion or otherwise, the plane would have had major problems. Seems hydraulics control most everything on some planes.

The BBC earlier today was on low graphics mode (which I like) due to "unprecedented traffic" to their web site. Tell me why are they getting more traffic today than they would on say Sept. 11 or 12?? I understand people are interested to learn about another potential terrorist attack, but this situation was announced almost from the start as likely to be an accident or mechanical failure. The only people that died were the people on the plane. Could it be that more people are home because of the Veterans Day holiday or because they are laid off work? Just thought it was odd today would be their highest traffic day ever.

Recent public statements by Microsoft executives have cast Linux and the open-source philosophy that underlies it as, at the minimum, bad for competition, and, at worst, a "cancer" to everything it touches. Behind the war of words, analysts say, is evidence that Microsoft is increasingly concerned about Linux and its growing popularity.

It's nice to know they see Linux as a threat. They should.

The agreement provides Microsoft with a rich set of strategies to undermine the development of free software, which depends upon the free sharing of technical information with the general public, taking advantage of the collective intelligence of users of software, who share ideas on improvements in the code.

Glad someone pointed that out in a direct manner. Let's hope because its prominent people that somebody takes notice as well.

There are some that we've lost and not gotten back. For instance, income tax was intended to be temporary. Did that return to normal after the threat was over or do we still pay it???
