Actually its from a SNL skit... Although the donald duck thing is a damn good guess:)
In the SNL skit, the inhabitants of town are having a town meeting, EVERYONE is dressed in gold and jewels, wearing kings crowns, carrying scepters etc etc...
A man at the podeum adressess the crowd and says, "Ladies and gentlemen, I think we need to talk about the magic fish problem. As you all know, magic fish are getting harder and harder to come by these days, and the ones we do find, often aren't very good." Someone from the crowd chimes up "Yeah, and some of them have an attitude! Yesterday I was fishing and I caught a magic fish and I asked it for a golden rocketship that would take me to the moon... You know what that fish said? He started talking about weight ratios and how gold wasn't good for making rocketships... So I smashed his head in!" the man at the podeum chimes up, "I think we need to transition to a non-magic fish based economy." (and the skit continues...)
Basically the villages economy was based on magic fish (which grant wishes when caught). Its obscure but it seemed to me like latley magic fish = dot coms:)
I've only heard one worse thing then that in my life... My boss is pretty famous for not paying the last months wages for anyone who leaves... But this was a new one, when one of our people decided to leave, he wouldn't pay his last month and he barked about "not being happy with the guys work" and DEMANDED that the guy RETURN THE MONEY FROM HIS PREVIOUS PAYCHECK!
Needless to say, a more passionate "Fuck you!" was never heard.
The copy protection is just a few reserved bits in the serial frame... they indicate the "protection" the stream is supposed to recieve, "Original" (copying allowed), "1st Generation" (recieveng device should NOT allow copying), and "No SCMS" (off).
There are two s/pdif formats, "Consumer" and "Professional"... Consumer has something akin to macrovision embeded in it called "SCMS" (serial copy management system). However IIRC its completley up to the device to honor the SCMS protection:)
Just how hard is it to run a set of patch cables? The performance loss is far less than what you get on MP3 as it is.
Back in 86 I had by all rights one of the first cd players to come out, a Magnavox (IIRC) that had a "digital out" on the back (coaxil s/pdif). I used it until a belt broke in early 2000. I had no clue what the s/pdif was for most of the time I owned it, but I can't help thinking what an awesome tool that would be for making mp3s!

Everyone knows that nobody can really see the difference between 40fps and 100+fps
This is true but you've missed the point... FPS is a measurement of *average* framerate. Ultra fast cards are an attempt to raise the *worst case* performance of the card not the average case. A mere side-effect of this is raising the FPS.
The GPL basically says "if you use other peoples code then you must let others use your code"... thats not unreasonable in the least. You are *ALWAYS* free to not use other peoples code, then you can do what you damn well please... you just can't do what you damn well please with other peoples work.
I'll admit the duality of using restrictions to give freedoms seems paradoxical... BUT, the GPL gives you more rights then an EULA i've ever seen.
If you don't like it, use the BSD lic... M$ will love you for it.
It sounds to me like you want the "freedom" to use GPL'd material without the "obligation" of releasing your own source...
most will run happily on 486's... and at most have comic mischeif and some rare cartoon violence...
Read: Monkey Island 1 and 2, Day of the Tentacle, Sam n Max hit the road, etc...
Some other non-violent games that require like a p200mx or better : monkey islan 3, 4 and Grim Fandango...
Grim Fandango might be an interesting choice -- its about "Manny" who is forced to work off his misdeeds in life by public service in death... and its the best game ever made.
Most of these you can pickup for 15$, theres a reissue of moneky island 3 that includes monkey island 1 and 2 as well... 15$:)
The reason its not accepted was because it wasn't there in the first version of windows 95... so if you want people to be able to use your app on win95 you still have to install your own scheduler...
GUI apps are impossible to automate, run from crond, pipe information in and out of... this is why they will always be needed in unix, this is why they ARE needed in widnows...
Window's answer to crond is every program that needs to schedule something includes its own task bar scheduler that eats 5 megs of ram. And you'll notice those programs execute command lines as well (ie. nav/scanall), because a command line interface is the *ONLY* conveniant way for one program to manipulate another.
What I'd like to see is a powerful kernel mostly written in a very high level safe language like O'Caml or even Java. That would be a feat with some important consequences.
How do you think your going to load a java interpreter to run the kernel?:) 25 meg "sun microsystems" MBR ?
The P4P service unfourtanatley is a "wealth redistribution" scheme... You have to pay 20$ a month to join the service...
WTF? I have to pay 20$ a month to get paid? Mp3.com takes their cut of the subscriber money and then redistributes the rest back to artists by popularity... So alot of artists loosing money is paying for the few who are making alot of money:)
Im not sure how familiar with the US court system you are, but juries (and possibly judges?) can find someone not guilty they object to the law itself. This is called "Jury Nulification".
IMHO if they pleaded guilty, there would be no trial and the judge would skip directly to sentencing -- thats not a good thing.
im afraid it depends on how old ya are and how much money you have... in my (relatively affluent) 20 something crowd I don't know anyone who DOSEN'T have an mp3 stash
you my good man are a fucking genius. This is the best suggestion I've heard against the DMCA so far! Someone mod this up and someone else make a webpage to organize this!
Please don't compare these comedy-rejects to Bob Hope or Bing Crosby...
I haven't seen this movie... and Im not gonna... and heres why: I've seen all the other Kevin Smith movies, and for awhile I thought they were really great... but the more KS you see -- the more you start to really hate the guy. His plots are a vehicle for the dialog between his characters... which wouldn't be a bad thing *IF THE DIALOG WASN'T SO CONTRIVED*.
KS movies aren't in touch with anyone and aren't in tune with anything or anyone. A great remark I heard on PBS "The difference between Steven Speilberg and Martin Scorsese (sp?) is that Steven Spielberg wants to make a movie that touches everybody, Martin Scorsese wants to make a movie that touches Martin Scorsese."
Which is really what this comes down to -- this movie is prolly a masterpiece to KS, but to me its a heaping pile of...
Lastly, Id like to pose the question, where does katz get off liking these guys then panning something like the final fantasy movie... both were devoid of meaning and were generally awfull movies. The difference though, is jon katz is incapable of liking an "insider" film and is incapable of hating an "outsider" film. The glass is half empty for FF and half full for J&SB. Tried and convicted john.
Before we know it, there could be keyloggers for everyone to download!
Maybe there already is... maybe they're inserting it into programs people commonly use... if gator can get spyware onto 100 million computers, why cant the CIA?
I love DT but face it... they're dinosaurs. People are ready to feel good about themselves again and *thats* why DT isn't on the top of anyones list.
However, what might be undestated is that advertising will make *anything* sell. At large the american public are sheep that will buy what they're show.

It says a RedHat employe wrote the code ... the guy stole the code and probably played quake for 2 months. Thats why you strip off the copyright.
Needless to say, a more passionate "Fuck you!" was never heard.
lower case a for minor assholes, uper case A for "Capital Assholes" :)
Could the "A" stand for asshole? We've got alot of A-holes in my locale :)

Since when is the intersection between piss poor journalism and bad taste in television an addiction?

Mattel offered "barbie" and "hot wheels" computers earlier this year ... maybe intel could go in with Mattel and offer an Easy Bake Itanium computer.
maybe he dosen't wanna pester people with it ;)

KS perdicting that people will dog his movie on the internet should tell you something ... I don't see any irony here.
