  1. What should I buy now that I can't get a V56K? on 3dfx Drops Video Card Division · · Score: 1

Grrr, I had saved up for a V56K and I was going to grab it as soon as it was available, but now I can't get one what should I get? I have a Voodoo 3 2000, and I have found the drivers very reliable, but having seen some dodgy driver issues with TNT2s I am reluctant to switch to a different card even though I want 32bit color, does anyone know how stable he GeForce2 drivers are, and will all my major games work well with the GeForce2? (Quake 3, counterstrike, Diablo2, Unreal Tournament and Ultima 9)

  2. Best card on the market on Cheaper Video Cards Compared · · Score: 1
Can anyone tell me what the best card available at the moment is (price is not a factor), I want to upgrade and I'm hearing that the GeForce2 is the best, but will the Voodoo 5 6000 be better (when it comes out)?

Also if anyone knows the best DVD drive to get I'm looking to retire my CDROM, and the DVD controller which will be on the V56K is certainly going to be a plus.

  4. Sounds like a communist on Against Intellectual Property · · Score: 1
Hettinger says that a fitting reward for labour should be proportionate to the person's effort, the risk taken and moral considerations. This sounds all right - but it is not proportionate to the value of the results of the labour, whether assessed through markets or by other criteria. This is because the value of intellectual work is affected by things not controlled by the worker, including luck and natural talent. Hettinger says "A person who is born with extraordinary natural talents, or who is extremely lucky, deserves nothing on the basis of these characteristics."

I would disagree with the writer on this point, this argument displays immense cluelessness, could you imagine going to an employee and saying, "yes we know you did 5 times as much work as Joe Bloggs over there, but you are ten times as smart, so we are going to have to pay him twice as much as you."
Certainly some valid points are raised, and IP has gone way to far, but to totally abolish IP would be ludicrous and would not encourage innovation. IP, like trade unions is a necessary evil.

Actually, spectral analysis is used to detemine what elements something is made out of, spectral analysis cannot detect if there is a chemical bond between the elements which are present. As far as I can tell this link isn't claiming to be using spectral analysis, as with spectral analysis it would only be possible to determine that Hydrogen, Oxygen and Carbon were present, but you could notdetermine they they were bonded into sugar.

Spectral Analysis is possible because as electrons drop from one energy level to a lower energy level they emit the difference in energy as EMR, each different element emits certain frequencies of light, thsi is why if you burn something with a high copper content you get a blue-green flame (I think it is blue-green).

    • The atmosphere of mars is extremely thin, resulting in greater amounts of harmful cosmic rays reaching the surface, add this to all the other problems a thin atmosphere has
    • AFIAK water does not exist as a liquid on the surface of mars, only as solid or gas, I think this is a result of both low gravity and low air pressure (low air pressure is most likely a result of low gravity also, but I couldn't be bothered finding the facts about this tho)
    • I don't know how low a pressure the human body can take, but I don't think you would want to be on Mars unprotected, I know they will use suits or something (no pun intended, although it would be amusing to get rid of a lot of managers...)

A year ago I bought a Voodoo3 2000 and while it was not the best card on the market at the time, and is becoming a bit obselete now. I have never had any serious driver issues with it, but I want to upgrade to another card to get access to various bonuses like 32 bit colour and a DVD controller thing, a TV-out would be an added bonus despite the fact I don't have a TV. What is the best Video card on the market at the moment, and how will it compare to the V5 6000? My main concerns are that it will work well immediatly, my V3 has never had any problems - ever, Q3, UT, Baldurs Gate, Ultima9, etc. Every game I have played with it has worked well and straight away, I have a friend who has a TNT2, he has had lots of problems with some games, when he gets them going they look really good, but it just seems that 3DFX works straight away. can enyone tell me what I would get instead of a V5, any why?

Lots of customers will change ISP's when they get poor service/connection, I know that I have several times. Besides the other ISP's being unfairly disadvantaged there is the issue of dailing banks to transfer an EFT, a large company can spend a VERY large amount of money to get things working when they can't pay their employees, there was a case here in Australia a month or two ago when the State Bank EFT transfer system when down for a day (on payday), I work supporting a payroll program and the phones where flat out all day with people trying to figure out what was wrong with our program when it was in fact the state banks problem (I know I suffered a great deal of abuse from Irate, computer illiterate payroll clerks). If AOL 5.0 kills your DUN settings and you don't find out until payday (which is bad enough without EFT problems) it could delay pays until the next day (if you miss the cutoff time for the EFT) this is a very bad thing, employees have lost there houses/cars/etc due to getting a late pay, AOL stuffing up DUN is NOT an inconveniance.
