    Actually, that is quite true. We (Israel) have the second highest cellphone ownership per capita in the world (behind Finland). Even when I have a university telephone nearby, I prefer to call via cellphone. That could be the reason why there is no motivation to upgrade the network.

    By the way, I reread my comment and I really came off as a jerk. Sorry for that, it's not how I meant it.

    I always hate it when people talk about improved performance in general. I'm curious about what specific features of the 2.6 kernel you feel he would benefit from?

    I have no idea. I was BSing through the teeth. I love these Linux articles where one could snag a +5 Informative by throwing some buzzwords in the right places. Hell, I even had a typo in the subject!

    ...then go with the newer kernel. 2.6 has _lots_ of improvements above 2.4. The security aspects may be of less interest in your application, but the performance probably won't be. I've always believed that it is better to regret having done something than to regret having not done it.

    Do they still make phones with a pulse/tone switch? Seems strange, since the last pulse-only POTS service disappeared a long time ago.

    Disappeared? Maybe in the first world country where you live. My university still has an internal pulse-only network.

    Obviously you have never been to Florida (Cape Canaveral is in Florida). At least in the Miami area, being only an "American" and not a [Cuban|African|*]-American is both a shame and dangerous.

    No, it's just fixed in place.

    Well, it _should_ be fixed in place, but they screwed up and it moves a little, but it hurts like crazy if I touch the wrong flank of the thumb. I can have it fixed again, but I'm not really up to that. There's not much bone in there any more, it's all bone filler.

    This thing is fantastic -- imagine not having to move your arm and wrist in order to move the cursor. I'm kind of surprised that I haven't seen more people using them, although they do take a couple of days to get used to. However, once you're accustomed to it there is no going back.

    I don't have an opposable thumb, you insensitive clod!

    (Actually, I don't! I broke it three years ago.)

    Not to be rude here, but what does it matter if it has an "F-lock" key?

    Because when the machine powers up the default is off - meaning that the F keys do not work as expected

    It's worse than that: PrintScn does not work with the F-keys ON. So to use PrintScn (I do that a lot, I triage bugs for KDE) I have to disable F-keys, use PrintScn, then reenable F-keys. It it weren't for that I would love this MS split keyboard, but that ruined the keyboard for me and I am looking for a replacement.

    You will want multiple copies, in different formats, in different locations. Can't get much better than those two.

    Don't most store security systems use VHS tapes for their security cameras?

    If they switch to non-erasable DVD, there's going to be a metric ton of these that just go to waste every day.

    Many (most?) record to hard drive nowadays. In fact, many of the cameras are designed for use with standard PCs.

    I recently had the challenge of trying to find a VHS player in a retail store. I couldn't find one, so in that sense the format has been dead a long time. Now that no major manufacturer is producing new media, I wonder in how many years the last playable VHS cassette will wear out. 20? 50? Will there even be an operable player at that time, that can output video into a then-standard format?

    Or just force X11 into thinking it has a higher DPI monitor, and it will scale things accordingly... Running a lower resolution is a bad idea since it will make things pixelated and thus harder to read.

    How does one do that? My laptop has a 129 DPI monitor and it is a pain. I use Kubuntu if it matters, and no, increasing the DPI in System Settings doesn't do anything.
