And with the rise of cheap cell phones, there's actually little incentive to ever upgrade them.
Actually, that is quite true. We (Israel) have the second highest cellphone ownership per capita in the world (behind Finland). Even when I have a university telephone nearby, I prefer to call via cellphone. That could be the reason why there is no motivation to upgrade the network.
By the way, I reread my comment and I really came off as a jerk. Sorry for that, it's not how I meant it.
I always hate it when people talk about improved performance in general. I'm curious about what specific features of the 2.6 kernel you feel he would benefit from?
I have no idea. I was BSing through the teeth. I love these Linux articles where one could snag a +5 Informative by throwing some buzzwords in the right places. Hell, I even had a typo in the subject!
...then go with the newer kernel. 2.6 has _lots_ of improvements above 2.4. The security aspects may be of less interest in your application, but the performance probably won't be. I've always believed that it is better to regret having done something than to regret having not done it.
BTW - a lot of the designers would resent to be called 'American'
Obviously you have never been to a NASA facility.
Obviously you have never been to Florida (Cape Canaveral is in Florida). At least in the Miami area, being only an "American" and not a [Cuban|African|*]-American is both a shame and dangerous.
Well, it _should_ be fixed in place, but they screwed up and it moves a little, but it hurts like crazy if I touch the wrong flank of the thumb. I can have it fixed again, but I'm not really up to that. There's not much bone in there any more, it's all bone filler.
This thing is fantastic -- imagine not having to move your arm and wrist in order to move the cursor. I'm kind of surprised that I haven't seen more people using them, although they do take a couple of days to get used to. However, once you're accustomed to it there is no going back.
I don't have an opposable thumb, you insensitive clod!
Not to be rude here, but what does it matter if it has an "F-lock" key?
Because when the machine powers up the default is off - meaning that the F keys do not work as expected
It's worse than that: PrintScn does not work with the F-keys ON. So to use PrintScn (I do that a lot, I triage bugs for KDE) I have to disable F-keys, use PrintScn, then reenable F-keys. It it weren't for that I would love this MS split keyboard, but that ruined the keyboard for me and I am looking for a replacement.
I recently had the challenge of trying to find a VHS player in a retail store. I couldn't find one, so in that sense the format has been dead a long time. Now that no major manufacturer is producing new media, I wonder in how many years the last playable VHS cassette will wear out. 20? 50? Will there even be an operable player at that time, that can output video into a then-standard format?
Or just force X11 into thinking it has a higher DPI monitor, and it will scale things accordingly... Running a lower resolution is a bad idea since it will make things pixelated and thus harder to read.
How does one do that? My laptop has a 129 DPI monitor and it is a pain. I use Kubuntu if it matters, and no, increasing the DPI in System Settings doesn't do anything.

Do they still make phones with a pulse/tone switch? Seems strange, since the last pulse-only POTS service disappeared a long time ago.
Disappeared? Maybe in the first world country where you live. My university still has an internal pulse-only network.

How much more data does the lander need to send before the total mission cost is cheaper on a per MB basis than sending txt messages to your BFF?
It already is.
Actually, I have at least one ex-girlfriend who meets that description as well.
Thanks!
Am I using the wrong word? I am referring to the sides of the thumb, specifically above where the first joint is on healthy thumbs.
No, it's just fixed in place.

(Actually, I don't! I broke it three years ago.)
You are not familiar wth goatse, are you?

I took a look at their keyboards once, but this image just scared me away:

-As if actually analyzing the actual lunar samples brought back by earlier moon missions wasn't enough.....
This is news because now NASA can say "See!?! I _told_ you these really came from the moon!".
The question is, what the heck can I burn it to so it might survive 30 more years?
Amazon S3 _and_ tape?
You will want multiple copies, in different formats, in different locations. Can't get much better than those two.
Don't most store security systems use VHS tapes for their security cameras?
If they switch to non-erasable DVD, there's going to be a metric ton of these that just go to waste every day.
Many (most?) record to hard drive nowadays. In fact, many of the cameras are designed for use with standard PCs.
Slashdot isn't that exciting.
Tabbed browsing is! My /. addiction is so strong that I take porn breaks to browse.
doesn's become the next supplier in line the major supplier automatically?
When that supplier also stops we have a duplicate newsreport. Slashdor will surely report this since this is a tradition.
VHS wil be like BSD... dead.
The year of the death of VHS will likely be the year of the Linux desktop. Like another /. poster recently commented, that's every year!
I still see DVD/VHS combo units around fairly frequently....
Where do you live? Here in Israel (Haifa) there are none.
first - nothing better to do on christmas day
Try masturbating. See how well I type with one hand?

Oh and yes my parents use vista, so there is verry little change they will get mallware installed.
