Say what you want about P2P programs and movie leeching. One of the most notable effects for me was that we don't have to wait half a year anymore in the rest of the world before we get to see a good movie!

The best example is Star Wars I. When this movie was released there were actually people in Europe that FLEW OVER TO THE USA to watch that movie. Can you believe the insanity?

That was also the movie that really rocked the internet for being on the internet _before_ it was released officially.

I downloaded SW1 two days after the USA release and watched it in the public computer room at my university where I drew a huge crowd. Including 2 guys who _had_ tickets already to fly over. (I thought SW1 sucked though. I'm happy I didn't spend money on tickets)

I'm pretty happy P2P movie leeching happened so that I was able to see LOTR in the theater right away. I did buy tickets for that one, and enjoyed it a lot.

I haven't downloaded the new Matrix film nor did I get it on the net. I'm pretty sure the internet version is of low quality so that doesn't tempt me too much. I don't have the need to go to the theater because I think it's probably going to be pretty mediocre if you don't count the fighting scene, so I'll just wait for a DVD release at the movie rental.

I've got a complete set of tools I use. One of the best uses I have for them, is installing a computer that does not have internet access. I'll highlight a few good ones.

    - Install CD's for WinXP, Win98 and Linux. These are always usefull, since a lot of them also boot from CD.

    - DirectX9 and the WinXP SP1 (137MB, not the net installer)

    - Extra DLL's like mfc42, vb6setup and cygwin1.dll

    - SFX-Bootdisks. You can use WinImage to create a self-formatting .EXE file of a bootdisk. Make bootdisks of ALL major OS's. (http://www.winimage.com/download.htm)

    - DOS programs: the latest Symantec Ghost, Norton Commander 4.0, ZIP, RAR, ACE. Bzip2 and gzip for DOS or Win32 won't hurt either.

    - WinACE supports a lot of compression formats natively. It's really good. If you work in a mixed Win/Mac enviroment, get a copy of StuffIt for Windows.

    - Drivers.. Hard to choose for 'generic' use, but a recent set of ATI and NVIDIA reference drivers never hurt. Also don't forget 'Via 4-in-1' and generic NE2000 and PPPoE drivers. ASPI drivers for cd-rom drives or writers are good too.

    - For graphics ACDsee is king. For editing a copy of Paintshop Pro is useful.

    - Compile a complete set of internet tools. These are some that are very useful:

Mozilla, ofcourse. That way you have a mail client too :) Don't forget to download an install version of the latest Java JRE (http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html)

    Agent (NNTP) http://www.forteinc.com/

PCMacLAN (Let Mac and PC share files and printers on the network)

If you want to remotely contol a PC, check out Radmin. I like this a lot better then PCanywhere. (http://www.radmin.com/)

    - Movies
Codecs are important, try using codec packs like Nimo or klcodec. Bring a copy of VirtualDub too. Don't forget Quicktime, PowerDVD and such. RealPlayer won't work well since it cannot install without contacting the internet :( (damn sypware)

    - Sound
    Winamp, Lame, CoolEdit

    - CD stuff
Nero CD writing software (www.ahead.de), Daemon-tools allows you to mount CD images right from the harddisk (www.daemon-tools.com)

    - Harddisk
R-studio can recover both NTFS, FAT32 and EXT2 files, Ext2FS will let you mount an EXT2 drive under Windows.

    - Misc
Norton anti-virus, Adobe Acrobat reader, UltraEdit. Microsofts free Word and Excel viewers.

    - If you're going to code some small programs, you might want to bring a copy of CygWin (www.cygwin.com) or a Borland compiler (the old ones are free) useful to make a small tool to do some repetitive task for example.

    - For the real hardcore debuggers: SoftIce (http://www.compuware.com/products/numega/index.ht m), OllyDbg (free) (http://home.t-online.de/home/Ollydbg/), Ida Pro (http://www.datarescue.com/idabase/). 14. IMHO on Debian And WineX · · Score: 2, Interesting

You know, I was really hoping this was going to take off. The only reason why I still have Windows on my computer is for games. Everything else I can do under Linux or Wine.

It's true that Transgaming was making a huge contribution to Linux, in an area where Linux was very poor. They were not that expensive with what they asked for their efforts. (Subscription based; $5 per month, $50 for a year)

However, they stated on their website that after 20.000 people became a member they will GPL all their code. Now Wine is LGPL they complain that it is too restrictive, while LGPL is less restrictive then GPL.

Another thing, the place where they mentioned the 20.000 people limit (Business Model), has suddenly been changed in the past 2 days. I know because I was looking into subscribing to them. I was even planning on mailing them to ask them how many people they already had. So is it a lie? Were they ever going to GPL their code? We had only that statement that disappeared without a trace.

So presumably no. Why? Because in their CEO's rant about Wine's license change to GPL, he states that it is impossible due to DMCA issues with the copyright protection they implemented. Also, they would for some reason be 'locked' into supporting Wine even if their business model would not pay what they want it to pay.

I can agree a little with the copy protection bit. However their claim that it contains highly sensitive information is nonsense. Advanced copy protections like SafeDisc and Securom have been reversed completely. Look up any reverser's webboard and you'll be smacked around the ears with all the little tricks that they use. With that you could even easily emulate the protection (which is already done in programs like Daemon-Tools).

So that can't be it. Did I mention that programs like InstallShield and Wise have been completely reversed too? Again, with this info around that can be found on any reversers board, anyone could write his own InstallShield installer.
The DMCA threat is overrated, although the DMCA has been abused for more ridiculous things already.

Then secondly, being locked in for support. I write some crappy OpenSource tools. I do this under an Artistic License. But with this, or even the GPL, there is NO obligation mentioned anywhere that I have to give support on it. Better still, it is explicitly stated that NO LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY is given with this software.

So what do they complain about? Maybe they claim that they have to keep up to date with the Wine tree? Also not true. They can take any copy of Wine, and work on it, as long as they publish their changes. No other obligation then that.

So where does this leave us? Remember SSH? The original author (Klonen if I recall correctly) had SSH as a GPL package, but later on changed it to a pay-for-commercial license. A group of people took the last GPL'd version and coded on it until they got OpenSSH, which is a perfectly fine SSH client and 100% GPL. This is a GOOD thing.

Now Transgaming is pushing Rewind, which is pretty much the same coupe as OpenSSH, except they do it so that the X11 license can be kept. Now you can argue that Transgaming deserves money for the work they do. Well I agree with that, but how far should we support that? Is Transgaming just putting up a friendly OpenSource front so they can get people to work for them for free? Or is it to get people to like them?

In short, by pushing the Rewind branch, they take away time and resources from the main Wine tree. This hurts us normal users. They put up a false front to attract coders and clients. If they were honest about their work, and it would help the Linux community then I'd gladly pay them for their efforts, but now I'm pretty much disillusioned.

  18. A definition on Defining Globalism · · Score: 1

It doesn't seem to hard to define

Globalisation - The effect of modern technologies that in effect make the world 'smaller'. This means that things like TV, internet, phones, satelites and a whole host of things, like Japanese cartoons, to Brazilian coffee make subtles changes to our life. Small on their own, but huge when you add it all up. But it goes in reverse too, since I have a phone I can make a difference on the other side of the world by talking to somebody.

Globalisation is mostly used when thinking of evil corperations raping the earth for the almighty dollar. This is just an effect of globalisation not a cause. The fact that they _can_ have an effect on the other side of the world means that they will because they have a driving force to do so (money)

It can be good too though, scientist are able to work together on diseases and other fields using the internet, making progress more quickly.

More and more it will become a thing in our lives, because more and more we are effected and
effect ourselves all over the world.

So to define globalisation I would say "The phenomenon of increase in the interconectedness of an individual with the rest of the world, both material and interpesonal"

In my humble opinion though. :)

So without our genetic make-up becoming stronger due to natural selection, why not take the road that will enable us to better ourselves through genetic engineering? It's impossible to stop the knowledge or the technology to do this.
I'm not saying that it won't create any problems, afterall, the more power we humans get, the more trouble we stir up (think of biological weapons) and the the difference between have's and have not's will be huge if we as a society don't try to distribute everything.
But in the end the path will go there, and there is nobody that can stop it. We as the people of this world will just have to try and use our brains every step of the way.
