  1. The Chinese would love that on Obama Calls For Nuke-Free World · · Score: 0

Guerilla warfare works only when the terrain allows it. The reason we haven't had a WW II-scale conflict since 1945 is nuclear weapons. Remove the concept of MAD and we are back to the 1940's - China would dominate (much more than it does today) Southeast Asia. Given their technological advantage, I would pick China over India in this real-world game of Risk - so they would split Asia with the Russian Federation, with the only hope for a free Europe being a forced confederation. Of course, if that happened we could drive south if desired and eradicate the drug-related violence on our southern border. Realistically, of course, the genie cannot be stuffed back in the bottle.

    The make vermin-resistant cable. Seriously.

Back in the 1980's I ran my first inter-building connection, across Broadway in lower Manhattan. We used a Con Ed tunnel for the run (I wonder how much that cost the bank). It came up beautifully for a day, then began intermittent outages. Three days of hair-pulling later, we had a Con Ed crewman down the manhole looking at our cable. He was a big Irish guy, had to be 6'2" / 210 at least. A few minutes later we hear "screee" and wonder what happened. A few seconds later the guy pops his head up holding a dead rat (yes, he was wearing gloves) and explained that we had installed the wrong cable between buildings. Lesson learned.

Start calling the cable manufacturers. Here's a link to get you started: http://www.bangkokcable.com/catalog/BCC_CATALOG/SPECIAL3EN.HTML

If you were to publish a project, written in Java using Spring and Hibernate talking to a Postgres back end (and be able to provide a back end to an Oracle or SQL Server), yours would not only be a very welcome addition to the FOSS portfolio but very likely have solid commercial potential.

Lots o' humor here, but if you're seriously looking for a guideline -

What are your company's business problems and competitive challenges? How can IT help the company kick butt in the marketplace? Apply that filter to what you want technology-wise and present it in that manner and suddenly you will find people listening. If you don't know the answers to the question, ask. Are the problems you see in the group business problems, i.e., do they cost the company revenue? Are the process problems you see perceived as process problems by your in-house clients? I love gadgets and toys and to make my databases fly, but the point at the end of the day is to help the business succeed (hopefully padding one's resume in the process). If you sound interested only in technology to management, you will be dismissed (not from your job, but not taken seriously).

  21. Can a faculty member help? on Negotiating Pay for Open Source Work? · · Score: 0

I'm an independent consultant for a living.

As others have said, you need to define the relationship you will have with the company and then determine a fair market value for the work you will do.

As an open source product, you hold no proprietary rights in the code other than those stated in its license (I am assuming it's GPL'd), i.e., the commercial firm can grab your code and extend it themselves as long as they release the extensions (or license it from you for commercial use; and other possisiblities).

My suggestion: see if there is a faculty member with indie consulting experience and ask him to help you negotiate. It took me a few years and a number of scars to understand the fine print in contracts, strike a reasonable negotiating position and figure out from looking at a project what the market would bear. You are wise in asking for help; you may well be able to find it in yor university's CS/IS department.

The firm would obviously prefer to a) use the original author of a work as he understands the architecture/concept best and/or b) support open-source software. However, they are under no obligation to use you in particular. Don't pretend this is any more than a commercial transaction and price yourself accordingly.
