"Something with some graphical flair, built-in help system for new users, and a game or two, or a little slideshow, or some interesting history text files, *something* built in to play while slow parts of the install proceed. "
Maybe that's the problem; it takes less than ten minutes to install OpenBSD on a new system off CD-ROM. Not even enough time for a quick game of Tetris, a la certain versions of Linux *cough caldera *. Or did you mean during an ftp install?
Honestly, if you think that BSD's biggest "problem" is a lack of fancy graphics during the installation, well... er, all right; I can't argue a matter of taste I guess.:-)
Content writers and proofreaders are important as well; someone who can tell the difference between "your" and "you're" can be a real boon to your professionalism.
I think you mean "boon to you're professionalism.
(ok that was probably funnier-sounding in my head.)
Yep, the AP1000's are sweet. Kudos to whoever thought of making an access point with two PCMCIA cards. Hopefully Lucent/Orinoco/Avaya will stay in business long enough to bring the price down though...
I think Neil Gaiman's American Gods will probably mark his entrance (in the realm of prose, at least) into the pantheon of high fantasy/science fiction authors. He will definitely struggle to overcome the graphic novel/comic book stereotypes stemming from his Sandman days, but I think he's a far more fluent and well-versed storyteller than several of the other suggestions I've read here.
My older cat wheezes (he's a bit chubby) after he's done playing for a while.
My younger cat fetches. I'm serious, too; my wife taught him how to retrieve crumpled-up paper, and they play fetch together for upwards of 10 minutes a day.
It's weird to watch cats walking around carrying things in their mouths.
Well. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm done. I own over 1000 music CDs, representing a considerable investment, and the only disk I've bought this year was the new Weezer, for my wife's birthday. In fact, I've not bought a CD for myself for about two years, and I refuse to feed the industry any more money until they figure out a better distribution model that compensates artists that deserve it and makes the music available to fans for a fair price. It's called a "boycott", I think, and I might stop going to movies pretty soon on a related note.
By the way, no, I don't pirate MP3's either - I listen to what I have, or I buy vinyl or cassettes for my car on the secondhand market for pennies on the dollar of what they'd cost new. Sure, I don't get all the newest releases, but do I care? No. Most stuff that comes out these days is crap anyhow. And if it's an artist that I particularly admire, yes, it's hard; but if you want to have principles in this world sometimes you have to make sacrifices.
It's too bad that most people can't resist the temptation of buying the newest album of their favorite musicians, because if they could, we'd have more rights as music lovers and the recording industry would have a bigger incentive to shed their evil business strategies. Alas, the MTV generation knows naught of delayed gratification.
Not to mention the fact that you can now buy DVD-R's holding 5.2 GB for around $3.00.
Do you think just making the files read-only would work just as well? I suppose then they'll come up with some nefarious RPC exploit, or just use Windows XP's built-in C.O.P.S. (Copyright Organizer/Procurator System). *sigh*
Well, there ya go, then. Just write a real-time MP3/Ogg Vorbis encoder that writes to the Microdrive, and you're off and running with hours and hours of dictation time. I'd offload the speech recognition to a desktop, though, since it'd probably be a bit, um, zippier.
Oh, and speaking of Unicode and Perl, I'd have to say that once again O'Reilly is probably a great place to start, and sending the dev team in charge of the Unicode conversions to ORA Unicoe boot camps/geek cruises is probably not a half bad approach.
There is also this fascinating title, which I've been meaning to read, merely because the page layout and typography within is a work of art. If you're in the bookstore and see this one, check it out. It's impressive.
The title of this article alone was enough to give me horrible flashbacks to working with EBCDIC/ASCII conversions and IBM's weirdly proprietary and immutable standards. Thank GOD for Larry Wall, is all I have to say about that.
Has anyone had any experience with these remote controllers, which supposedly can be used to remotely control WinAmp? They're listed as Packard Bell equipment, but there are other sites that have software that works universally with Windows applications.
I know that in the audio/visual spectrum, the trend recently has been to hook up more traditional mixer/movie editing controllers to PC's designed around these tasks. Go figure, turns out the WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus and Pointing device) interface isn't the greatest for everything, after all.:-)

I'll be the last one to defend them, but you ought to be careful spreading FUD in either direction. Ignorant flaming is never appropriate. Unless it's me doing the flaming.:-)
I suppose you could grow some plants hydroponically... How many seeds are in a gram? Do they charge you based on weight on takeoff, or weight upon landing? Or is it the average of the two...hmm. The mind boggles.
On the other hand, what are the chances of your payload actually returning intact? Reminds me of Homer and the floating potato chips. Spacemunchies, anyone?

Careful you don't create some sort of freak wormhole, there, buddy.

Jeez, if you use 15K RPM drives for "small servers", then what do you use for big ones? ;-)

You paid how much for your cat? Hell, I'd pay you to come take my cats.

You don't think Hilary Rosen reads Slashdot? ;-)

Sounds to me like you need a Personal Soundtrack Belt(tm) to hook up to your generator shoes.

Yep, that's about right. A microphone for dictation wouldn't hurt, either.

So why not download 20 100 MB files simultaneously, from 20 different sources? Whiner. ;-)
OK, Richard, whatever you say.
Backs away slowly.

Except Anthrax isn't communicable from human-to-human, at least not through the respiratory system.
It's probably you, ya troll. Quit doin' it; I paid $2000 for my MPC six months ago. grr
Why? Friends is better than any pimply Star Drek series they've shown in the last five years. Plus they are hotties.
