The first time I played the second episode in Quake. I had gotten home pretty late from work (retail sucks) I was tired, and it was dark. I wanted to play it since I had bought it that night. I put my headphones on so I wouldn't wake any one. I could hear the dog around the coner. I knew it was there, but when it jumped out of the darkess at me, I went throught the roof. I think that creepy CD Audio added a lot to the atmosphere as well.

I'm not sure if this true now, but those older 3d labs cards, while thy had impressiv specs, were not ment for gaming. They were designed for high end 3d modeling. i.e. Autocad drawing an entire design composed of thousands of little pieces. While the two uses have similarities, they are not the same.

sounds like you don't have a very good video card. My geForce2 has never been a problem. Also, how do you play FPS games? Even RTS games are much easier with a mouse/keybard. The keyboard for shortcuts to units, the mouse is for that selection arrow. I can be fast and twitchy w/ a mouse, it's hard to do that with a little joystick. Although, I must admit, consoles do have there place. Trying to play Smash Brothers on a computer realy would suck.
