That is pretty cool. Implement it in current CPUs and you could quadriple overclock it without the liquid nitrogen cooling. Though your room might get a bit hot...
Well, if my recently purchased Dell XPS goes black, I will have the shits at Dell, not Microsoft. It would be Dell that sold me a counterfeit copy. If however a false negative occurred and I got the black screen of death, I'd have the shits at Microsoft. Either way, it would be Dell who would be getting an abusive call.
well, they wouldn't be booting up from hard drives. A mobile phone will possibly boot up from ROM somehwere and a calculator (depending what kind) might have the firmware already in the microcontroller's flash memory. Either way, they all boot up.
In the end, its all in the way you perceive it. An operating system such as Windows and Linux, Mac.. etc. are really layers upon layers of applications which deal with low level control and interaction of hardware all the way up to what you see on the screen. Overall, its an OS. Explorer itself for example is just an application running on top of the OS, as well as KDE and Gnome. Some people only consider the kernel as the OS while I personally consider the whole bundle as the OS.
From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system):
"An operating system (OS) is the software that manages the sharing of the resources of a computer. An operating system processes raw system data and user input, and responds by allocating and managing tasks and internal system resources as a service to users and programs of the system. At the foundation of all system software, an operating system performs basic tasks such as controlling and allocating memory, prioritizing system requests, controlling input and output devices, facilitating networking and managing file systems. Most operating systems come with an application that provides a user interface for managing the operating system, such as a command line interpreter or graphical user interface. The operating system forms a platform for other system software and for application software. Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux are three of the most popular operating systems for personal computers."
In that sense, ajaxWindows is using the resources on the computer provided by your browser, which has its resources provided by the OS, which in turn makes ajaxWindows nothing but an application running in an application running on the OS.
Well your phones and calculators certainly do boot up, just not in the same way the OS does it.
In the end, an OS which runs in the web browser of another OS is not an OS. Its more of an operating environment rather than anything else. To me at least, an operating system is something wich ties your hardware together and makes your PC useful. The same for your phone and calculator. If you wrote an app for your phone which made it look like another OS and all the rest, it wouldn't be an OS, it would be just an app that you run on your current OS. ajaxWindows != OS ajaxWindows = WebApp. As such, it goes into the category of Facebooks and Myspaces and all that other stuff that seems nifty at first, and gets boring after a few minutes..
So please people, stop calling this crap operating systems. They are nifty tools, I'll give them that, but besides the entertainment and novelty value, I don't see them as anything groundbreakingly wonderful.
Hmm, don't you just wish sometimes people's IP addresses were posted when posting as Anonymous.. and then banned for life. If you are going to verbally attack someone like that, grow some balls and post under your real name.
I think getting an extra arm with a dust wiping cloth would be a good idea too. Maybe two arms - one that sprays Windex, and the other one to polish. Might be a little energy inefficient, but quicker.
why would you do something silly like that. Do it the good old fashioned way and just use a whole stack of logic gates. http://www.homebrewcpu.com/. Then have a webserver running on it.!
Seriously. A free operating system versus Windows Vista, and all they can come up with is $50 cheaper? You might as well buy the Vista version, then install Ubuntu - at least that way you will have a licensed copy of Vista that you can put back on later..
Unfortunately that is sometimes not easy to do. A lot of IC's will still run of 3V minimum, and even that is considered low power stuff. Some microcontrollers will run on 1.8V min (e.g. MSP430), and that is easily achievable using 2 AAA NiMh batteries. If you want to run any of your other ICs, you need to design a switchmode power supply which just takes up room on your PCB (to convert up to 5V say).
Therefore, its much easier to just use a Lithium Ion battery. Single cell - 3.6V. Its still rechargeable, just more expensive. (and not to mention it is much harder to recharge a lithium battery compared to a NiMH battery).
Who knows, but maybe the slashdot developers should just make a script that gives -1000 karma to anyone who posts a goatse link, and -1000000 karma to anyone that posts a sneaky goatse link.
What is the point of WebOS-es? You need an OS to run a browser, and then a browser to run an app. It sounds pretty bad. Just keep it the old fashioned way - your apps are on your disk, you access them whenever you like. Another thing is, with a web os, do you have web storage? And in that case, do you want the host of your app to be able to look at your data?
I downloaded it for the 400 Millionth time after having to re-install windows that many times!
I don't think there is any DRM if you get it through Steam? I.e. I don't think you get rootkit-ted ? I could be wrong.
Nice job moderators. May you burn in hell. So go on, mod this down too.

Not much more to add except well said.
Yeah, sure "tsm_sf".

Then you can pay me royalty fees for each minute that other house exists. I'll be rich!!

I think I played this on Xbox?? Seemed fine to me - you had to carry loads from one place to another and win money to buy new stuff etc etc..
Digg!
Now wheres my pony??
